First Clip from Let Me In Released

The first clip from Let Me In has been released online, and for those of you expecting some crazy vampire action, you may be disappointed. However, if you’re a fan of crazy kidnappers strangling random teenagers from darkened back seats of parked cars, then you’ll probably be in heaven. Matt Reeves’ remake of Let the Right One In keeps a lot of the creepy, stylistic elements of the original Swedish film, and you can definitely see that in the clip below! Junkfood Cinema: Lady Terminator

A hearty welcome back to all of you faithful readers of Junkfood Cinema, confused as you may be by the day-late nature of this week’s entry. As you were told in last week’s most excellent entry by Mrs. Junkfood Cinema, Brian is taking some time off in the month of September, so a hand-picked group of Rejects will be keeping the lights on in one of our most prized columns with a series of guest entries. This week, it is my turn. Which meant two things: it gave me the opportunity to introduce our resident Schlocktologist Mr. Salisbury and his ever-bearded compatriot Luke Mullen to one of my own favorite instances of cinematic indigestion, and that the column would be a day late — because that’s how I roll. (In reality, the day late problem occurred due to the fact that I was moving this week and may or may not have misplaced my copy of Lady Terminator in the move.) Thankfully, I was able to extract my copy of Lady Terminator from the wreckage of my recent move and host a Friday evening that would ultimately be filled with vagina snakes, single-shot Uzis, Bronson Pinchot’s Indonesian doppleganger and the Malaysian Miley Cyrus in the first (and most apt) franchise reboot of James Cameron’s Terminator. This night was about a mostly nude lady on a rampage. First she mates, then she terminates. Either way, she’s going to steal your heart. What Makes It Bad? Lady Terminator emerged from the ether [...]

Print to Projector: The Killer Without Cause

As the only literate Reject, it?s my duty to find the latest, the greatest and the untouched classics that would make great source material for film adaptations. I read so you don?t have to. This week, Print to Projector presents the story of a young man enamored by a beautiful city who discovers that amidst its perfection lies a man who lures victims to a violent death by drowning. Print We open on a bare stage lit with blue and white lights. The central focus of “The Killer” by absurdist playwright Eugene Ionesco is a young man named Berenger who has left the toil of the city for the splendor of a secluded planned community known as the Radiant City. As he hears more about the controlled climate, the omnipresence of blooming flowers, and the high quality of every building, he becomes more infatuated with the promise of the place. He desperately wants to live there. Every character in the play – from the Architect who designed the city to The Killer himself – is a breathing symbolism. Berenger is the embodiment of idealism – naive, excitable, quick to fall in love. He’s a man who decides that he has the moral duty to stop the Killer from taking anymore lives. This takes him through a fascist political rally, into the shining fountain of the Radiant City, and right to his best friend’s doorstep. Potential Problems As an absurdist play, it would be incredibly difficult to adapt for the screen [...]

?Hobo With a Shotgun? Trailer Will Rip Your Head Right Off Your God Forsaken Neck

The first trailer for Hobo With a Shotgun was, of course, technically a fake trailer. With the first trailer that actually corresponds to a movie coming out, it looks like director Jason Eisener wanted us to see the deeply human side of the hobo. This is perfect for Rutger Hauer, the unnerving master of all things uncomfortable. The look that he gives in this is the human equivalent of chugging a big gulp of curdled milk. Just for fun, we’re putting the trailers up side by side for a comparison. Both battle for bloody supremacy, but only one of them is doing it for the kids.* *Trailers not suitable for children. The newest trailer featuring Hauer (from that handsome devil Quint at Aint it Cool News): The original fake trailer that played before Grindhouse, featuring David Brunt: Hobo with a Shotgun is slated for a 2011 release. Review: Flashpoint ? The Other Lane

Team One suits up for a hot call in a residential neighborhood after some people reported a loud fire cracker like sound. Turns out that, that sound was the bullet of a Mac10 being fired inside a stash house where a buy is currently taking place. Upon storming the front of the house the team discovers that Ed’s brother Roy is behind the buy. Now it’s up to Team One to figure out if Roy has turned to the wrong side of the law, or is he in fact playing an elaborate game of undercover cat and mouse to take down one third of the entire Toronto illegal gun supply. What worked: This episode as all about high tension, and I loved every second of it. The opening take down of the stash house was classic Flashpoint. The team moved quick, clean and most importantly, realistically. This show has always able to grab the audience by the throat and take them on a ride that they’ll enjoy. I like how the writers have chosen only to give Ed a life outside of the SRU. By that I mean that Ed is the only one we know anything about beyond his role in Team One. I thought the addition of his brother a few weeks ago was really cool, and the writers really stepped up the game of Roy Lane in this episode. When Roy and Ed were looking down the barrels of each others gun I was hanging on to [...]

‘Due Date’ Director Todd Phillips Talks Following Up ‘The Hangover’

‘I think pressure is always a good thing,’ Phillips says about expectations for Robert Downey Jr. flick.By Eric Ditzian

Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis in “Due Date”

Photo: Warner Bros.

Robert Downey Jr. is convinced that “Due Date” is a better movie than “The Hangover,” for the simple reason that, as director Todd Phillips explained to MTV News, “Due Date” is about something, whereas “Hangover” just follows a bunch of groggy dudes around Las Vegas.
Phillips doesn’t necessarily agree with Downey, but he’ll take the compliment, just as he accepts the pressure of following up the $467 million worldwide success of “Hangover.” His mission after that flick broke big last year was to get right back to work. For that task, he hauled Zach Galifianakis back into the mix and recruited Downey. “Due Date” follows Downey’s character, Peter Highman, whose wife is about to go into labor, forcing him to hitch a ride with Ethan Tremblay (Galifianakis) in an attempt to get to the hospital before his child is born. Their road trip does not, to say the least, go smoothly.
As part of MTV News’ ongoing Fall Movie Preview series, Phillips called us up to chat about working with Downey on a straight comedy, the “anti-chemistry” of his two stars and the difficulty of pulling off a cinematic stunt as surprising as the naked Asian who jumped out of a trunk in “The Hangover.”
MTV: I take it you’ve locked picture a while ago, right?
Todd Phillips: Yeah, we have. This movie could have come out in the summer, but because of “Iron Man 2″ and Robert’s press requirements for a movie that size, we had to space them out.
MTV: If it’s been done for a while, do you ever wake up and say, “Crap, I need to use a different take! I should have done this differently!”
Phillips: It’s funny you say that, because just yesterday we watched one of the release prints at the Arclight [theater in Los Angeles]. You want to see how the prints look, so you go to a regular theater. There was actually a little sound issue. So we went back in and fixed something with the sound. But that was more of a technical thing than a creative choice. When you look back at movies, you always go, “God, I would have done that differently, or I wished we had tried this,” but this one is still too close for me to do that.
MTV: Right, it’s when “Road Trip” comes on TBS that you go, “Damn!”
Phillips: Right. I’ll see “Old School” sometimes on TV and I’m like, “Oh, if only we’d had more time that day we could have done that better.”
MTV: You do have this great history with Warner Bros. and you’re coming off the huge success of “The Hangover.” When you said you wanted to do “Due Date,” were they ever like, “Todd, man, maybe hit ‘Hangover 2′ first?”
Phillips: You know, being at Warner, not to sound like a corporate kissass, but Warner Bros. is like being on the Yankees.
MTV: I’m a Mets fan, my friend.
Phillips: It’s still like being on the Yankees! They just have it so wired. The filmmakers that they choose to work with they support wholeheartedly, as evidenced by gambling on a movie like “Inception,” which was so brilliant but so big a gamble in studio terms. But they trust Chris Nolan because he’s f—ing amazing and they just let him do it. It’s pretty much the most supportive studio I’ve ever been involved with. They were excited to do “Hangover 2,” but once I had spoken to Robert Downey about “Due Date,” they totally got it.
MTV: Getting someone like Downey, does that alleviate some pressure — if there is any — about following up such a massive hit?
Phillips: I think pressure is always a good thing. A lot of guys make a big hit movie on the size of “The Hangover” and they get gun-shy. They wait a few years in a weird way, and I wanted to do the opposite. I wanted to do something again and not worry if it was going to be as big as “The Hangover” because “The Hangover” was lightning in a bottle. You can’t judge other successes or other movies based on it. I just didn’t want to get into that headspace. That was part of the reason for striking out and doing something real quick like “Due Date.” It’s something I had been developing — it’s not like it’s rushed — but it went quicker because I was like, “Let’s just go do it.” For me, I choose movies based on who I can get in it. Comedies are so about casting. Obviously I wanted to work with Zach again after “The Hangover” and Downey is pretty much the best there is out there. Once he said yes, we were like, “Let’s just go.”
MTV: We haven’t seen Downey do much straight comedy in a long time. I guess you could say “Tropic Thunder,” but that’s hardly something typical and straightforward.
Phillips: Yeah, you haven’t seen Robert Downey be Robert Downey. A lot of great actors — you see this with someone like Johnny Depp, who’s a huge f—ing talent, and Robert Downey — where they play parts where they’re putting on masks or accents or hats and wigs. They kind of like to lose themselves in a role. In “Tropic Thunder,” which I think is great, he’s in blackface and you’re not really seeing Robert. What was fun for Robert about this, and what was fun for me to make it, is Robert Downey just being Robert Downey. There’s no makeup, wigs. It’s just Robert playing such a real character.
MTV: Was that one of the reasons he signed on, to get back to something with less artifice?
Phillips: I’m not sure why he makes his choices. I know he loved “The Hangover.” I know he loves Zach and was a fan of my films. Actors like to play. For a guy like Downey, he loved the idea of not being on a green screen for 60 days and just coming in and f—ing around with a guy like Zach and a guy like me. It’s a real loose environment, as opposed to something like “Iron Man 2,” just by nature of the effects.
MTV: A movie like this lives and dies on the chemistry of those two dudes.
Phillips: Or the anti-chemistry, in this case. It’s interesting, because before “The Hangover” came out, people could dismiss it or say, “Oh, it’s a movie about bachelor parties and Vegas. I’ve seen that before.” And a movie like this, you go, “Oh, it’s two guys on the road. It’s ‘Tommy Boy’ or it’s ‘Planes, Trains and Automobiles.’ ” And it’s really not. It works on this whole other level that I think people are going to be surprised by. It connects on a different level.
MTV: It’s probably hard to put into words what that level is, but what were you aiming for?
Phillips: This is how Robert explains it, which is sort of a backhanded compliment. He goes, ” ‘Due Date’ is a better movie than ‘The Hangover’ because ‘Due Date’ is about something.” I know what he means. There’s another dimension. As proud as I am of “The Hangover,” it’s a two-dimensional film. It’s a comedy that works as good as any comedy could work. But there are some character moves in “Due Date” that Robert and Zach go through that I think will be surprising on a film that you think you have figured out by the trailer or the poster.
MTV: You mentioned that people look at it and think “Planes, Trains” or “Tommy Boy.” Did you go back and look at any of those road trip movies for inspiration or in terms of what to avoid?
Phillips: I love “Planes, Trains,” and I seriously love “Tommy Boy,” which is one of my favorites. But one movie all three of us looked at is “Midnight Run.” That might be the best of the bunch. It’s not so much to emulate or avoid, it’s just to be inspired in some way. “Midnight Run” was a big one for me.
MTV: The Dan Band has popped up in a bunch of your movies. Any chance we’re going to see them in “Due Date”?
Phillips: The Dan Band is not in “Due Date,” and it’s just by the nature of what the movie is about and where it winds up. There was no way without it feeling incredibly forced. But you could argue it’s a little forced in “The Hangover.” But I love them so much. They’re the best.
MTV: I don’t know if this is one of those questions you get a lot, but where do you go from a naked Asian man jumping out of a trunk in “The Hangover”? How do you top that?
Phillips: That is a tough one to top. The key with comedies in general is they work when there are surprises. So a naked Asian man jumping out of a trunk is a perfect example of a surprise. It goes back to what I was talking about before with even just the nature of “Due Date.” There are a lot of surprises in the film that I think take the movie to another level. The surprises won’t be a naked Asian man or the Dan Band, but I think there are enough surprises that it will connect with people. But that is the challenge, because comedies work so well when they are surprises.

Rihanna Begins Filming ‘Battleship’ In Hawaii

Photos of the singer from the movie’s set surface online.By James Dinh

Photo: Splash News

While rumors of a new single spread across the Internet, Rihanna is already beginning work on the set of her feature film debut in “Battleship.” Photos of the Barbadian songstress surfaced online yesterday showing a brunette Rihanna dressed in character.
Donning a traditional U.S. Navy getup with gloves and work boots, the singer was spotted in Hawaii on the set of the Peter Berg-directed science-fiction movie, wearing a nametag with the name “Raikes.” The board-game adaptation is the story of naval officers who use Earth’s ships to fight against alien intruders.
According to one of Rihanna’s latest tweets, the singer is scheduled to continue work in Hawaii for two weeks. “HAWAII…Hawaii…hawaii……who wouldn’t want to work here for 2 weeks,” she tweeted, along with a photo of her posing on a balcony.
In addition to the pop star, the film’s cast lineup includes “True Blood” star Alexander Skarsgård, Taylor Kitsch of “Friday Night Lights” and bombshell supermodel Brooklyn Decker.
Skarsgård told MTV News that the film will be “quite different from the board game,” and added that he doesn’t think “Battleship” will follow the latest trend of filming in 3-D. Skarsgård will play a commander of one of the Navy destroyers in the film.
Universal has set “Battleship” for May 18, 2012, release.
What type of character do you think Rihanna will play in the movie? Share your thoughts in the comments.

Wes Craven Praises Young Additions To ‘Scream 4′ Cast

‘[Anna Paquin and Kristen Bell] do have a very significant and exciting role in the film,’ director reveals.By Kara Warner

Wes Craven

Wes Craven fans have a lot to be excited about these days, as the beloved writer/director has not one, but two highly anticipated projects on his plate, the first of which is a horror/thriller due October 8.
The second project is “Scream 4.” the long-awaited fourth chapter in Craven and screenwriter Kevin Williamson’s hugely popular franchise, which not only reunites the original cast (David Arquette, Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox), but includes a slew of popular young stars, including Emma Roberts, Hayden Panettiere, Anna Paquin, Kristen Bell, Rory Culkin, Shenae Grimes and Lucy Hale.
When we caught up with Craven to discuss “My Soul to Take,” we couldn’t help but prod the man in charge for some “Scream 4″ scoop, beginning with how he managed to assemble his original stars.
“Well, I could take credit for it, but it wouldn’t be accurate,” he said.
By the time Craven was asked to direct, Dimension studio head Bob Weinstein had already secured Cox, Arquette and Campbell.
“It was just a matter of me saying, ‘Sure,’ ” Craven added.
For the director, the allure of rejoining the team to work on a good script was icing on the cake.
“I think all of us wanted to do something written by Kevin [Williamson] and to work together again,” he said. “We all had such wonderful times on the first three. It has been a return to a great deal of fun — just the pleasure of working together again. We know each other inside and out. There’s a lot of shorthand and a lot of fun memories from our past escapades.”
Regarding the new additions to the franchise, Craven was full of praise for his young stars.
“The young cast is amazing,” he said. “They’re extremely bright and a very varied cast. … They’re just great to work with. It’s fun to be doing that combination of the sort of classic actors of the first three and this new group of kids. [They] have very different and fresh personalities and great acting talent.”
And what about the plot? How does it fit within the franchise, and how does it differ?
“It’s a clear and/or pretty well-known [fact] that it’s a return to Woodsboro for Sydney Prescott, who is Neve’s character,” Craven said. “Courteney and David have, as they did in real life, have gotten married and are living in Woodsboro, so it’s the story of Sid’s return to Woodsboro and the series of events that take place there where those three are thrown together in a wild and crazy way, and then a group of kids that get meshed in the plot.”
Speaking of that group of kids, Craven went on to say that managing the appearances of all his young stars — most of whom are speculated to be making quick cameos — has been a pleasure rather than a headache.
“Well, that’s the great joy — it’s fun,” he said. “A lot of these actors I didn’t know that well or have not worked with most of them, or any of them, as a matter of fact,” Craven explained. “They always say, ‘It’s great working with you. I’ve wanted to work with you for a long time,’ but it’s wonderful working with actors like this that are very young and have a large following already because of their talent, and just to spend one or two days with them to do these kind of set/bit pieces is a lot of fun.”
With regard to those one- or two-day roles, we tried to get Craven to reveal a few specifics about two recently announced “guests” in particular: Anna Paquin and Kristen Bell.
“I don’t know what I’m allowed to say,” he laughed. “They do have a very significant and exciting role in the film, let me put it that way.”
What do you think of the star-studded “Scream 4″ cast? Who do you think will be the villain? Tell us in the comments!

Raekwon Co-Directing ‘C.R.E.A.M.’ Movie

Rae teams with Damon Dash for ‘Cash Rules Everything Around Me,’ plans to stay behind the scenes for the film.By Mawuse Ziegbe

2010 is turning out to be a major year for Raekwon. After pulling off successful appearances with the rest of the Wu-Tang Clan at this summer’s Rock the Bells Tour and jumping on a remix of Justin Bieber’s “Runaway Love” with Kanye West, the Chef has been cooking up a lot of buzz. Now, the Wu O.G. is setting his sights on Hollywood. The hip-hop luminary has revealed that he’s stepping behind the lens for a new flick.
“I’m working on a movie called ‘C.R.E.A.M.’ that I co-directed with one of my partners. We teamed up with [Damon] Dash,” Raekwon told New York Magazine in an interview published Friday (September 3). “Y’all gonna be hearing more about this movie that we’re putting together called ‘C.R.E.A.M.’ It’s called ‘Cash Rules Everything Around Me.’ It’s a lot of things transpiring right now, but I just want to continue to stay in my zone, stay focused and keep working.”
The MC didn’t divulge too many details about the project, which shares its title with a classic banger from the 1993 Wu LP Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers). He did, however, insist that he’s going to stay behind the scenes and has no plans to appear onscreen.
“I’m playing the outskirts on this one because I kind of feel like that’s where I’m at. You know, I don’t know. At this point, I probably won’t be in it, but we don’t know,” Rae said, “I want to more or less capture the scenes from the outside looking in, because I want it to be something that people say is a classic, and they respect the storyline of where we went with it.”
Raekwon also announced on Twitter that fans may be getting a taste of the flick very soon. “Believe it or not hopefully this week and nyc we will be shooting a trailer for the movie C.R.E.A.M so lookout for it!” the Wu MC tweeted on Friday.
The Immobilarity lyricist said he’s been looking to kick off the project for a minute and believes the time has come to make the film happen.
“This is something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time, even when we was making [the 2009 release] Cuban Linx II, I was already making it my business to obligate time to that, to putting the script together. It’s where it needs to be right now,” Rae said. “I’m just trying to be a machine. A roller coaster machine, man.”
In addition to the “C.R.E.A.M.” movie, Rae has been working on his upcoming effort Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang which he’s planning to drop later this year.

Review: Futurama ? The Mutants Are Revolting

It’s the crews 100th delivery! They’re sent to a rich lady with an explosive souffle provided by Elzar. But while attending a richy rich dinner party, Leela is once again discovered to be a mutant and sentenced to life in the sewers. The rest of the crew gets two weeks for harboring a fugitive mutant. But that only lasts for so long once Leela decides to fight for mutant equal rights. But with the humans away, Bender will play. For he decides to throw the ultimate 100th delivery bash at the Planet Express HQ. But things don’t go as planned when he begins to really miss all his friends. What worked: While this wasn’t the best episode of the season, it was beautiful. Just a lot of subtle jokes and zero forced topicalness. Exactly what Futurama should be. It was everything one could hope for from a Futurama 100th episode celebration. I really liked the return of the mutant community of New New York. I’m always a fan of those episodes, and I also liked how the episode played on the fact that this is like the sixth time Leela has been discovered to actually be a mutant. And Fry’s non-mutant form was rather hysterical. Not so much because it was actually funny, but rather because of how absurd it was. Bender’s ultimate 100th celebration party was just adorable. Not in that cute Baby Bender way, but it was just a nice, soothing reminder of why we all love Futurama [...]

‘My Soul To Take’ Uses 3-D ‘Subtly,’ Wes Craven Says

‘You can experience it the way you experience the rest of your life in 3-D,’ writer/director tells MTV News.By Kara Warner

Wes Craven

Photo: Getty Images

Buzz has steadily been building around Wes Craven’s upcoming horror thriller “My Soul to Take.” The film, which opens October 8, marks the first writer/director efforts from the beloved genre filmmaker since his segment in 2006′s “Paris je t’aime.”

When MTV News caught up with Craven during a brief-yet-miraculous window of downtime recently — he’s currently in the middle of shooting “Scream 4″ — he revealed his unique inspiration for “My Soul to Take,” why it’s more than “Stand by Me” with a knife, and how his use of post-production 3-D conversion differs from the way in which other films have used it.
MTV: It’s been a while since you’ve written and directed a film. How did that come about?
Wes Craven: I guess it was just the happy circumstance of having a conversation with [executive producer] Andrew Rona, who at that time was running Rogue Pictures, and him saying, “Got any ideas? I’d love to do another picture with you,” and I had just had an idea, and so I pitched him over coffee, and he gave me a green light for the script, and off we went.
MTV: How and when did the inspiration for the story strike you?
Craven: I know exactly when it came; I have no idea what inspired it. Sometimes I have these strange thoughts I’m almost embarrassed to say I have, but I was thinking about what it would be like to be a man — maybe it was because I was afraid I was enjoying too much happiness in my life — but I was thinking what it would be like to be a man who is leading a normal life at the time a series of serial killings taking place in the area where he and his wife live. … He discovers in his workshop a hiding place. He stumbles upon the tools of a serial killer that fit the description on TV that the police had captured in a security-camera recording, and he realizes that he is the killer and had a hidden personality. It sort of began there.
MTV: It seems like the trailer does a great job of setting up the story without spoiling anything.
Craven: It’s a great trailer. We were very happy. I kept saying it’s kind of “Stand by Me” with a knife. It’s not really a grisly gore-fest in any way. It’s as much a family story and coming-of-age story as anything else, but it does have murders in it and it does take place among 16-year-olds, so it does fall into that genre. But I really tried to reinvent that genre by doing something that had a humanistic story to it and kind of a psychological and even spiritual story to it, so depending on how you look at it, it’s either a story about personality or about souls.
MTV: The cast is relatively unknown and young. What do you enjoy about working with younger, lesser-known actors?
Craven: The truth of the matter is that, at that age, there are very few actors who are seasoned or well-known. Some of these actors had worked, or at least one had worked in Disney films. These were all of their first starring roles. I really enjoy working with young kids. They have great spirit and energy and are just kind of beautiful to watch and direct. I guess if I could have, I would have worked with really experienced actors so I wouldn’t have had to be kind of a schoolteacher too, but they gave great performances. I’m delighted with the way they delivered onscreen.
MTV: When you say schoolteacher, do you mean telling them to be quiet and get to work?
Craven: It’s more just teaching them the technical stuff of acting, hitting your marks, finding your light and saying things so they’re pronounced enough so people can understand what you’re saying. Most teenagers kind of mumble and say things too fast for most people to understand. It’s just the minor things like that, but it’s actually a pleasure to be helping pass on the craft a bit. … I directed Johnny Depp in his first film ["A Nightmare on Elm Street"], and I look back and say, “Wow, I’m really happy to be part of that gift to the world that he is.”
MTV: Is this a standalone film, or is there potential for sequels?
Craven: I would say that I certainly did not design it to be that, but it does have an element to it that actually could make it as easily a franchise as the “Scream” franchise, where you have different killers in each film. The central character, I think, would be very interesting to follow through a few more films, but it depends on how the film does.
MTV: What can you say about the 3-D conversion?
Craven: It was not shot in 3-D, but the studio offered to do that, and I thought it would be interesting to explore — not as the gimmicky 3-D of some films, but to use it as a natural enhancement. You can experience it the way you experience the rest of your life in 3-D. … For a narrative film, rather than spears coming at you in your face in the theater, [we used it] subtly to warp reality for a character that has schizophrenia or some of the kids when they’re going through their extreme events, breaking those forward from the screen rather than keeping them at the screen or behind the screen and yet doing them in a subtle way so the audience won’t be aware we’re doing it. We’re able to manipulate the mind in a way we weren’t able to before. I’m quite fascinated by it. We might be one of the first films to treat it that way. … It’s not a film that puts it in your face. You’ll be aware, but in general, it’s using it very, very subtly. … It’s been a very interesting education for me.

Kings Of Leon Release Come Around Sundown Art, Track Listing

First single, ‘Radioactive,’ will premiere on band’s website on Wednesday.By Kyle Anderson

Kings of Leon

Photo: Gareth Cattermole/ Getty Images

Though they faced scathing reviews from a pack of pigeons in St. Louis a few weeks ago, most of the rest of the rock world is eagerly awaiting the fifth album from Kings of Leon. The wait is finally coming to an end, as Come Around Sundown is set to drop on October 19, with the first taste — a single called “Radioactive” — coming out next week.
“Radioactive” will see its video premiere on Kings of Leon’s official website on Wednesday, September 8. It will then move to radio on Monday, September 13, and to iTunes the next day. As with most high-profile rock releases, two versions will be made available: the standard album as well as a deluxe edition that will include bonus tracks.
Come Around Sundown contains 13 tracks, several of which have been road-tested by the band during its summer tour. In keeping with tradition, the new tunes unveiled on the tour combine bluesy, hard-rocking sensibilities with just the right amount of Americana twang (especially “Mary,” which has quickly become a live staple). Meanwhile, the new single “Radioactive”
is a fantastically kinetic uptempo rocker that features a giant sing-along chorus.
In addition to the track listing and single release dates, Kings of Leon also released the cover art to Come Around Sundown. It features a photo of a small island with a pair of palm trees at sunset. Shot from the sea, it’s a warm, wistful image that serves the title of the album extremely well.
Kings of Leon’s summer tour continues through September 25, when they will make up the Missouri show that they had to cut short because of pigeon droppings.

Jessica Alba Calls Her ‘Little Fockers’ Character ‘Totally Crazy’

‘I play a pharmaceutical sales rep who is very, um, outgoing,’ Alba tells MTV News of the Ben Stiller/ Robert De Niro comedy.By Kara Warner

In addition to kicking butt in Robert Rodriguez’s “Machete,” Jessica Alba is also appearing among the star-studded cast of “Little Fockers,” the third installment in the franchise that features Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro playing out their often awkward son-in-law vs. overprotective father-in-law relationship.

“I play a pharmaceutical sales rep who is very, um, outgoing and has no sense of personal space,” Alba recently told MTV News. She hinted that her character might inadvertently try to get a little too close to Stiller’s lovable Gaylord Focker. “She says exactly what’s on her mind and she has no filter at all,” the actress explained. “She was really fun because I’m pretty much the opposite of that.”
Alba admitted that keeping a straight face on set was a big challenge, since most of her scenes were with funnyman Ben Stiller. Still, she had a blast, she said, particularly with her character’s freewheeling ways. “It was just fun and pretty liberating to play someone who was just so open and so free and totally crazy.”
“Little Fockers” is set a few months after the events of the last installment, “Meet the Fockers,” as Stiller and Teri Polo’s parents-to-be busily prepare for baby. Producer Jay Roach told MTV News earlier this year that Stiller’s attempt to remain calm is thwarted by a familiar face (and former nemesis).
“It’s Owen Wilson coming back with a new passion for Ben’s wife, Teri Polo,” Roach said. “And of course it’s hidden and it’s all under the surface, but it causes a lot of new wrinkles in the relationship between all of them,” the producer explained.
In addition to Alba and Wilson, “Fockers” will also feature Dustin Hoffman in the role of Stiller’s father opposite Barbra Streisand, an addition to the cast that was only recently made due to the film reportedly coming in under budget.
“Little Fockers” is due in theaters December 22.

4 Reasons Why ?Gravity? Will Be Just Fine Without Angelina Jolie

The Chicken Little sentiment of the day is that Angelina Jolie’s passing on Gravity – the incredibly cool-sounding sci-fi flick from Alfonso Cuaron – could possibly sink the ship. After all, Warners is sending $80 million up into orbit, and the film rests almost solely on the shoulders of the female lead. Who could be worth that kind of money? That question and the concept that any actor’s refusal could possibly sink a production would have mattered five years ago, but we’re past the point where actors matter all that much anymore. I’ll grant that Salt made over $100 million domestic, and it was done on Jolie’s shoulders. Yes, she has the capability of creating large numbers. But to think that the sky is falling just because she declined is foolish, and here’s why. Jolie Isn’t a Sure Thing Anyway Salt was a minor hit, but it wasn’t a nuclear explosion of cash for the studio. Plus, her track record isn’t exactly proof that her involvement would matter. Did the fans go to see her when they bumped Wanted over $100 million, or was it the comic book or the concept? Did the fans go to see her when they sent Mr. and Mrs. Smith north of the mark, or was it Brad Pitt, or the combination? Her last film before Salt to truly carry as her own was Changeling, and that wasn’t exactly a cash cow. She sells tabloids, but that doesn’t mean she’s the end all of film [...]

Gavin and His Boys Join the Fashionable Beckhams For Birthday Fun

Gavin Rossdale brought Zuma and Kingston to The Grove in LA yesterday before joining lots of celebrity friends at Romeo Beckham’s laser tag birthday party. Gwen Stefani is out of town, so she couldn’t join her sons, who played with the three Beckham boys, Heidi Klum and Seal’s children, and the rest of the kids. David carried in a special birthday message from Ron Artest for Romeo and had a little PDA moment with Posh inside the bash. Victoria was of course dressed to the nines, while overseas it was announced that she is nominated for designer of the year by the British Fashion Council. The winner will be announced on Dec. 7, and she’s up against Burberry, Mulberry, and Pringle. Posh posted her second tweet ever, this time about Fashion’s Night Out, so perhaps her exciting honors will be the topic of number three!

Eminem And Jay-Z: By The Numbers

Before their Home and Home Tour kicks off, we size up the superstars’ stats.By Gil Kaufman

Eminem and Jay-Z

Photo: Kristian Dowling/ Getty Images

Cincinnati Bengals wide-receiving duo Chad Ochocinco and Terrell Owens refer to themselves as the Batman and Robin of the NFL, but in the hip-hop world, Jay-Z and Eminem are more like the Batman and Superman of music. And just like it’s rare to see the two titans of comics together in the same panel, you know it’s a special occasion when Slim Shady and Jigga team up for a live show.

That’s why fans are freaking out about the first of four planned joint concerts between the dynamic duo, which kick off at Em’s hometown stadium, Comerica Park, on Thursday night (September 2) and wind up next weekend in Jay’s backyard at Yankee Stadium on September 12 and 13. Nobody knows who the pair will bring onstage as special guests or what they’ll play, though we did learn Wednesday that VMA nominee B.o.B will open all four dates.
But how do the massive careers of these two titans measure up? Both have sold tens of millions of albums and played to hundreds of thousands of fans during their decade-plus in the public eye, and each brings a unique strength and style.
Let’s break down their numbers to get a sense of what led up to this historic collabo:
On the Charts
Eminem has been a chart titan for his entire career, posting six #1 albums in a row on the Billboard 200, along with four #1 singles on the Billboard singles chart. According to Nielsen SoundScan, his U.S. album sales are 38.3 million, with an additional 30.5 million U.S. downloads on songs where he’s the lead artist.
His best-selling download to date is “Lose Yourself,” which SoundScan reports has sold 2.9 million copies, while his feature on the Akon tune “Smack That” pads his résumé with another 3 million in downloads credited to ‘Kon. Marshall’s best-selling album is The Marshall Mathers LP, which has banked more than 10 million copies.
Jay has some equally gaudy numbers, beginning with a jaw-dropping 11 #1 albums on the Billboard 200, along with four #1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100, though that includes only one solo #1, “Empire State of Mind,” and three features.
Though Eminem has stronger overseas sales, Jigga’s not far behind in total U.S. album sales, with Nielsen SoundScan reporting that the Yankees fan has sold 31.4 million discs to date, including collaborative works with R. Kelly and Linkin Park. He’s also no slouch in the download department, clocking 21.4 million downloaded tracks as a lead artist, with the Alicia Keys-featuring track “Empire State of Mind” ringing up his biggest digital numbers at 3.9 million, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
Vol. 2 … Hard Knock Life stands as Jay’s best-selling album to date, with more than 5.3 million units shifted.
When Nielsen SoundScan released the list of the best-selling artists of the decade so far, Em topped it at 31.1 million, with Jay rounding out the top 10 at #10 with 19.4 million.
The pair are almost even when it comes to Grammys, with Eminem edging out Jay 11-10. But when you tally up total worldwide sales, it’s clear that Slim Shady holds the crown, with more than 80 million units shifted to Jay’s 40 million.
On the Stage
“Rap, as a genre, does not translate as well to a concert stage as bands in the recorded music world,” Pollstar Editor in Chief Gary Bongiovanni said. “And not a lot of acts have that strong a touring career, but among touring rap artists, I’d have to say these two, along with 50 Cent, are among the most successful touring rap artists of their time.”
Eminem has the lighter touring résumé, according to Bongiovanni. Unlike Jay, who has toured more than half a dozen times in this decade, Em, 37, has only really had a handful of major outings, starting with some non-headlining dates in 2001 on the Up in Smoke Tour, as well as taking the lead on the inaugural dates of his Anger Management package.
In 2002, he headlined the second Anger Management outing, hooking up with Papa Roach, Ludacris and Xzibit and the X-Ecutioners, which Bongiovanni said averaged around 23,000 fans per show and grossed $1.3 million per date and, like the first effort, also went overseas for some European dates.
There were a few sporadic shows in 2003, and then Em brought Anger Management back in 2005 with Ludacris, G-Unit, Lil Jon and 50 Cent for a 24-show swing that, according to the data on the 22 shows reported to Pollstar, averaged more than 15,000 fans and grossed more than $1 million per show. The planned European dates were scotched when Em checked into rehab for treatment of an addiction to prescription medication.
Since then, Shady has only performed a handful of times. “There’s something to be said for pent-up demand,” Bongiovanni said of Eminem’s success at drawing major crowds during his sporadic touring career.
Jay, 40, on the other hand, has lately made touring an intricate part of his career. He’s gone from headlining 3,000- to 6,000-seat venues in 2001 to playing to an average of more than 10,000 on his aborted Best of Both Worlds double-bill with R. Kelly in 2004 — which grossed more than $1.4 million per stop — and right around that for his 2009 Blueprint 3 Tour with N.E.R.D., Wale and J. Cole. That tour hit arenas and played to an average of 8,500 fans, grossing $543,000 per show.
While he continues to be a big draw in Europe, with his high-energy, full-band presentation, Jay solidified his place as one of the premier rap touring acts in the U.S. in 2010 by hooking up with Young Jeezy and Trey Songz for a sold-out arena tour that averaged 12,900 fans and around $1 million per show, according to Pollstar. Jay will also open some dates for U2 in November and made stops at the Coachella and Bonnaroo festivals this summer.
The Scorecard
That puts the two rap giants around even, so you can expect them to bring the goods at what promises to be a historic four-night stand.
What special guests do you hope Em and Jay will bring out at the hometown shows? Let us know in the comments!

It?s Unclear If He Can, But Mark Millar Promises More ?Kick-Ass?

There’s something incredibly lacking in the announcement by Mark Millar that there will be a sequel to Kick-Ass. For one, it comes slightly unexpectedly considering the less-than-explosive showing at the box office and the unnecessary nature of continuing the story. For two, the comic book writer whose work is being adapted announcing that they want more of his work to adapt (and doing it on British radio show) seems more like wishful thinking than a genuine announcement. I’m still keeping my salt handy. He’s chalking up the green light to DVD sales, but this feels more like a stunt to test the responsive waters than it does a true press release. Unfortunately, even if the online community pumps a collective fist into the air with excitement, that leaves the sequel in the same place the original was as far as enthusiasm goes. Testing the waters might not even matter. If the film is truly greenlit, expect more announcements in the coming month. Also, expect a story where villains dress as heroes (who can really tell the difference with all that spandex?) and Hit Girl attempts to go straight. Because that’s exactly what audiences want.

‘Breaking Dawn’ Casts Rami Malek As Benjamin

‘I’m thrilled,’ the ‘Pacific’ actor says of joining high-profile series.By Kara Warner

Rami Malek

Photo: Mark Sullivan/ WireImage

Just when it seemed like things were all quiet on the “Twilight” front — save for a few updates from actress Nikki Reed and screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg — “Entertainment Tonight” reports that “Pacific” star Rami Malek will be joining the “Breaking Dawn” cast as Egyptian vampire Benjamin.
“I think it’s going to be great,” he told “ET.” “It’s going to be super exciting, and I’m thrilled.”
In addition to “The Pacific,” Malek has appeared in various films and TV shows, most recently in the “Night at the Museum” movies as Ahkmenrah. He is also in Tom Hanks’ upcoming film “Larry Crowne.”
So who is Benjamin? Fans of the books will remember him as a member of the Egyptian coven who, upon receiving word from Carlisle, comes to help Bella and the Cullens battle the Volturi. Benjamin is a young vamp blessed with the special ability of controlling the elements (à la Storm from X-Men), though he has yet to fully master his powers.
Benjamin is just one of many new characters in “Dawn.” The extra roles have proven to be a challenge for Rosenberg, who told us recently she’s currently struggling with the film’s big battle scene, during which the two groups of vamps face off.
“The final battle sequence is a big challenge, because it lasts 25 pages,” she said. “It’s almost an entire three-act story in and of itself. You have to track hundreds of characters. It’s an enormous challenge to choreograph on the page and for [director] Bill [Condon] to choreograph on the stage.”
What do you think of Rami Malek’s casting as Benjamin? Let us know in the comments!

Rihanna Begins Filming ‘Battleship’ In Hawaii

Photos of the singer from the movie’s set surface online.By James Dinh

Rihanna on the set of “Battleship” on Wednesday

Universal has set “Battleship” for May 25, 2012, release.

Pixel to Projector: Portal

The cake is a lie. Anyone who is a fan of puzzles, sentient computers that can kill you, and guns that create inter-spatial portals — well, you’ll dig Portal. In 2007 Valve gave gamers an exceedingly unique playing experience by not only tying our brains in knots with deeply involved gameplay that required significant forethought, but did so with the kind of suspense, pacing, and twisted humor that lends to a strong Pixel to Projector candidate. The Game Portal is a puzzle/action game set in the Half-life universe, the story taking place in a secret research facility owned by Aperture Science, Inc. The game follows Chell, a mysterious woman who wakes from stasis to find herself a human lab rat in the Enrichment Center of Aperture Science.  She is led through a series of increasingly deadly tests by the dangerously off-kilter (though at times, hilarious) sentient computer GLaDOS. Chell must use inter-dimensional portal technology in the form of an experimental gun to overcome the complicated test chambers she is forced to enter to complete the experiment (with the promise of cake if she succeeds, of course) perhaps find out who she is, and even more importantly — escape. With a disembodied computer voice and one completely silent character, you might be inclined to think that there isn’t enough atmosphere in the world to give the first hour of a film based on this game enough juice to get people through without looking at their watches — but as this video suggest, there is plenty to keep an audience on the edge of their [...]

Chug: ?Conan? Gets Drunk with Topless Barbariennes

Movie lovers wanting to violently tear out their hair whenever an adult property is watered-down for the PG-13 cash will find themselves rejoicing next to the bearded miscreants who love drinking 60 Minute IPA from a giant novelty beer stein. That’s because FSR is organizing a march on Washington, DC to take back Hollywood from infantilizing films that should be sexed up instead of sexed down. Why are we doing it it Washington, DC instead of Hollywood? Ask the intern who bought the plane tickets. If these photos of the set of Conan are to be believed, we’ll also be inviting the fans of the upper half of the nude female form. The photos are censored due to the last lawsuit we got, but you can check out the not-sullied-by-black-bar images at the official blog of the film. It all looks like barbaric fun, but it’s doubtful that the film can even scrape the surface of where Robert E. Howard took the novels. However, on a cultural correction note, those women wouldn’t normally be topless. It’s a well known historical fact that all of their bras were at the dry cleaners that evening. What do you think? ‘True Blood’ Star Alexander Skarsgard Ready To Board ‘Battleship’

‘It’s quite different from the board game, obviously,’ he tells MTV News.By Kara Warner

Alexander Skarsgård

Photo: MTV News

LOS ANGELES — With the third season of “True Blood” wrapping up in the next few weeks (the season finale airs September 12 on HBO), Alexander Skarsgård fans will have to resign themselves to the fact that the striking Swede will not return to TV screens until 2011. The good news, however, is that due to his standout performances on the show, Hollywood has taken notice and signed him up for several upcoming projects.

One that we’ve been keeping close tabs on here at MTV News is “Battleship,” based on Hasbro’s beloved board game. The nostalgia factor alone is enough to make us want to see this film, but the cast — including Skarsgård, “Friday Night Lights” breakout Taylor Kitsch, Rihanna and supermodel Brooklyn Decker — is eye-candy icing on the cake.
When we caught up with Skarsgård at HBO’s Emmy afterparty on Sunday, we asked him what he thinks about being in a film based on a board game.
“I don’t really think about that very much. It’s quite different from the board game, obviously,” he said with a smile. “Pete is a great guy — the director, Peter Berg — and I’m just excited to start it, I really am.” Skarsgård added that he flies to Hawaii this week to begin production.
Asked whether the film will feature any gratuitous shots of him and his co-stars running around battleships, looking pretty with big guns, Skarsgård was unsure. “I play a commander of one of the destroyers in the Navy, so, that’s a big gun,” he offered.
The topic of big guns brought up the current 3-D trend — will fans get their first three-dimensional look at Skarsgård in the flick? “No,” he said. “I don’t think so.”
“Battleship” is set for release May 25, 2012.

What?s a Scene You Hate From a Movie You Love?

You?ve stumbled upon Circle of Jerks, our sporadically published, weekly feature in which we ask the questions that really matter to our writers and readers. It?s a time to take a break from our busy lives and revel in the one thing that we all share: a deep, passionate love of movies. If you have a question you?d like answered by the FSR readers and staff, send us an email at editors@filmschoolrejects.com. This week’s question comes from Managing Editor, Cole Abaius: I recently re-watched Ghostbusters for probably the 10th time in my life, and for the 10th time I loved it. There’s no question that it’s a fantastic, funny comedy, but there was always one scene that never worked for me. It kills an otherwise great moment. I’m talking, of course, about the scene where a ghost unzips Ray’s pants, and he giggles like a schoolgirl. Is it a dream? Does a ghost really fellate Ray? It’s unclear. But it’s clearly awful. It can’t be all bad, though, because it led me to this question: what’s a scene you hate from a movie you love? Rob Hunter First off, it’s clear Ray is getting a spectral hummer in that scene, but it probably just reminds you of something you saw your grandparents doing late one afternoon. As to the question at hand, the movie that comes immediately to mind is Wet Hot American Summer. I love this movie with the heat of a thousand summer campfires, and I can’t go [...]

Linkin Park just premiered their murky, mercurial video for “The Catalyst,” and for the second consecutive week, the song is #1 on the Billboard rock songs chart, but so far, they’ve yet to perform the song live.
But on September 12, at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, that will change. Because Linkin Park have just been added to an ever-growing list of performers for the big show, and they’ll be playing “The Catalyst,” for the first time on television.

“After two years of working on our new album, we’re looking forward to sharing our first live performance of new music with our fans around the world on the MTV Awards,” Chester Bennington said in a statement about the show.
It’s an appropriately big stage for the song, the first single off the band’s much-anticipated new album, A Thousand Suns, which hits stores on September 14.
Other confirmed performers for the 2010 VMAs include Eminem, Kanye West, Justin Bieber, Paramore, Drake, B.o.B, Usher and Florence and the Machine. Travie McCoy, Jason Derülo and Robyn will also join VMA house artist deadmau5 for a series of intimate performances.
Confirmed presenters for the show include Justin Timberlake, Ke$ha, Nicki Minaj and Trey Songz. More performers and presenters will be announced in the coming days. Comedian Chelsea Handler will host.
The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12 at 9 p.m. ET. Go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for the Best New Artist video through September 12.

‘Machete’ Director Robert Rodriguez Reveals Trick To Onscreen Nudity

He front-loads his movies with nakedness, then ‘in your mind, everyone is naked the rest of the movie.’By Kara Warner

Robert Rodriguez

Photo: MTV News

“Machete” was originally conceived as a fake trailer in “Grindhouse,” but fan demand convinced director Robert Rodriguez to make the story into a full-length feature, which opens Friday. The film, which revolves around the titular character and his attempt to clear his sullied name, is full of blood, action, crazy weaponry and beautiful naked and half-naked women.
When we caught up with the “Sin City” and “Spy Kids” filmmaker recently, we asked how he decides when to play the naked card and when to avoid it.

“Ask my sister. She tells me, ‘You need to have more hot chicks in this movie!’ ” Rodriguez said, playfully deferring to his co-editor and co-writer, Alvaro Rodriguez.
“I have a trick,” he admitted. “I did this in ‘Sin City’ too. People say, ‘There’s so much nudity in “Sin City.” ‘ I say, ‘No, if you look close, there’s only [some] at the very beginning.’ ”
Rodriguez said showing a lot of skin from the get-go makes people think they’re seeing more than they do. “If you do it at the beginning of the movie, in your mind, everyone is naked the rest of the movie if they’re scantily clad — because that’s how the comics are drawn,” he said. “['Machete'] was the same way.”
Rodriguez cited a particular scene at the beginning of the film, in which Machete tries to save a beautiful (and naked) woman, as his prime example. He said the decision to have the actress appear sans clothing throughout the entire scene helps enable extra tricks in the plot that wouldn’t work otherwise.
“That was the first scene I wrote. There’s got to be a girl that he goes to save and she’s naked and he’s having to run out with this naked girl over his shoulder, but then you put a twist on it,” Rodriguez explained, continuing with a pseudo-spoiler. “She ends up working for the other side and tricking him by being nude. That way he doesn’t see it coming. Everything else, he’d be able to see a trick coming,” he said, adding that there isn’t much more skin in the rest of the film (save for a topless scene in a pool). “It’s really just that trick.”
“Machete,” starring Danny Trejo, Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez, Robert De Niro and Don Johnson, opens Friday.
What do you think of Rodriguez’s trick? Will it affect how you watch the film now? Let us know in the comments!

?Machete? Will Now Photo Bomb You For Free

I highly doubt that the marketing team behind Machete intended for anyone to use their nifty new internet toy in the way I have, but I figured it would spice things up. After all, there are enough photos of sad-looking men in sunglasses who have inserted Jessica Alba and Michelle Rodriguez into their bathroom with the click of a mouse. For those hoping to be fans of the movie, here’s a great opportunity to snap a shot of yourself wielding a heavy knife or jumping across a flaming parking lot on your motorcycle so you can be in your very own Machete poster. You can then, of course, share it with your friends on the facebook and the twitter. Or you can just go to the site to enjoy the soothing music. Machete, starring Danny Trejo, Robert De Niro, Michelle Rodriguez, Jessica Alba, and Steven Seagal hits theaters this Friday. As you can tell by the unofficial poster (pictured right).

‘The Last Exorcism’ Leads The Way At The Box Office

‘Takers,’ starring T.I. and Hayden Christensen, lands at #2 for the weekend.By Adam Rosenberg

Ashley Bell in “The Last Exorcism”

Photo: Lionsgate

[Editor's note: After this story was published, recalculated box-office numbers put "Takers" over "The Last Exorcism," with $20.5 million to the horror movie's $20.3 million. "Takers" star T.I. called MTV News to thank fans for making his heist flick #1.]
The Box-Office Top Five
#1 “The Last Exorcism” ($21.3 million)
#2 “Takers” ($21 million)
#3 “The Expendables” ($9.5 million)
#4 “Eat Pray Love” ($7 million)
#5 “The Other Guys” ($6.6 million)
It was a close weekend race at the box office, but in the end the powers of evil overtook the powers of, well, less evil. The Eli Roth-produced, Daniel Stamm-directed horror mockumentary “The Last Exorcism” took the #1 position this weekend with $21.3 million in ticket sales spread out over 2,874 screens. Trailing only slightly behind in the #2 position was the heist flick “Takers,” with a take of
$21 million from 2,206 screens.
Even though it emerged on top, “Exorcism” is a bigger winner than it seems to be. While no budget has been reported, the single camera format, absence of big stars and minimal special effects couldn’t have driven the film’s cost very high. Even factoring in marketing — which has been largely focused online with viral campaigns like — a $20+ million box-office take is a considerable win.
“Takers,” by comparison, boasts a star-studded ensemble that draws from both Hollywood and the music biz. Chris Brown and T.I. star alongside Hayden Christensen, Idris Elba, Matt Dillon and Zoe Saldana in a crime drama about a high-level, high-stakes bank robbery. The film’s budget is reported to hover around $20 million.
It’s a sharp dip after that for positions three through five, which are filled by movies that came out earlier in August. The action throwback “The Expendables” came in at #3 with $9.5 million, slightly more than half of what it earned last week. Still, with a total gross of roughly $82 million — more than double its reported budget — in just 17 days, the Sylvester Stallone-directed/ written/ starring flick is no small success.
Spots four and five went to a pair of Sony releases, “Eat Pray Love” and “The Other Guys,” which brought in $7 million and $6.6 million, respectively. The surprise for the weekend was the theatrical re-release of “Avatar.” Opening on roughly 800 screens with the benefit of 3-D and an added nine minutes of footage, the movie only managed to pull in $4 million, good enough for a #12 spot on the weekend list.
Check out everything we’ve got on “The Last Exorcism,” “Takers” and “The Expendables.”

Drake, Kanye West Collabos On The Ready Set’s Wish List

‘Definitely into remixes,’ frontman Jordan Witzigreuter tells MTV News of wanting to work with the hip-hop stars.By Jocelyn Vena

The man behind the Ready Set, Jordan Witzigreuter, released his debut album, I’m Alive, I’m Dreaming, earlier this summer, and while the LP doesn’t have any featured guests, the musician says he’s very much open to collaborating on his blend of pop, funk, techno and hip-hop.

“I’d kind of like to collaborate with, honestly, anybody!” the Ready Set recently told MTV News. “I’m thinking to try and collaborate with some hip-hop artists, do something with Drake or Kanye West, whoever’s down to! Definitely into remixes and stuff.”
Given today’s musical climate, where artists often drop other musical genres into their own personal song sauces, the Ready Set said the timing is perfect for experimentation.
“I feel like nobody wants to buy an album that’s 12 songs [of] the same thing,” he said. For I’m Alive, he ensured he wouldn’t have a homogeneous sound by working with a range of producers, including J. R. Rotem (Rihanna, Leona Lewis, Plies). The result, he explained, are tracks that are fun to play for his fans.
“It’s cool. It’s always exciting getting to play new songs,” he said. “It’s cool to see people starting to sing along. It’s good seeing people enjoy those songs because I obviously enjoyed writing them. … I’ve been working at something happening for like the past three years, [so] it’s cool now to see a glimpse of things taking off a little bit. The shows have been getting better and better. It’s really cool.”
What do you think of the Ready Set? Would you like to see him nab a Drake or Kanye collabo? Let us know in the comments!

‘True Blood’ Stars Call Getting Naked ‘Another Day At The Office’

HBO co-stars Anna Paquin, Stephen Moyer and Alexander Skarsgård appear nude, bloody on cover of Rolling Stone.By Kara Warner

With shows like “Mad Men,” “Breaking Bad,” “Dexter” and “True Blood” earning prized nods at the 2010 Emmy Awards, it’s clear that the cable channels are reaping the rewards of their original programming. And those programming choices often involve pushing the envelope with edgy, provocative subjects and story lines. And these days, HBO’s “True Blood” is the epitome of provocative TV.
The show is not only a bloody good time, but its daring themes and attractive cast are bleeding into pop culture (cheesy pun intended!). Case in point: Stars Anna Paquin, Stephen Moyer and Alexander Skarsgård appear naked on a recent Rolling Stone cover. When MTV News spoke with the cast at HBO’s Emmy party on Sunday, we asked their thoughts on the saucy photos, as well as who might next be naked on a magazine cover.

“I just saw the naked Rolling Stone cover with our beautiful castmates,” admitted co-star Jim Parrack a.k.a. lovable Hoyt Fortenberry. “But it’s like another day at the office, we’re used to seeing that.”
Nelsan Ellis, who plays Lafayette Reynolds, told MTV News he found the cover shot just plain sexy: “It’s gruesome and sexy. Naked people with blood on them — only on ‘True Blood.’ ”
Lindsey Haun, who plays Sookie’s cousin Hadley, agreed with the “sexy” description, but also had a bit of artistic analysis to offer. “They looked sooo good with that blood all over them! Sexy, although Alex was making kind of a surprised face,” she said. “It was funny. Stephen and Anna were totally sultry, but Alex, I felt like he should have been in the Sex Pistols with the look on his face.”
Newly named series regular Joe Manganiello — coincidentally, the actor currently graces another magazine cover in a semi-dressed state — echoed Parrack’s sentiments about baring some skin.
“Oh, that’s just a typical day at the office for us,” Manganiello said. “That’s just how we all go out and earn a living, really.”
Fan favorite Kristin Bauer a.k.a. Pam De Beaufort said she might be ready for her own scantily clad close-up — after a cocktail or two. “When’s my turn? It might be in an hour or so if there’s free booze,” she joked. “I might just have to take matters into my own hands.”
Meanwhile, Marshall Allman (Sam’s brother Tommy) revealed that there’s a bonus photo that some readers might have missed.
“Did you get the one with the foldout?” he asked. “I’m on there, but I’m like [bends over and sticks his rear out, smiling]. You didn’t get that one? I guess it was a limited edition,” he joked.
We let Paquin have the last word on the subject: “Everyone should get naked!”

Ice Cube Explains Dr. Dre’s I Am The West Absence

‘I don’t feel bad, because Snoop can’t find him either,’ Cube laughs.By Jayson Rodriguez

Ice Cube

Photo: MTV News

NEW YORK — Ice Cube might rep the West on his new album, appropriately titled I Am the West, but the legendary Left Coast rapper is missing one important link: Dr. Dre.
The former N.W.A groupmates weren’t able to connect on Cube’s project, slated for release independently September 21. Ice Cube said his and Dre’s schedules weren’t able to align.

“I didn’t get a chance to work with Dre on this record,” Cube told MTV News from Skyline Studios in Manhattan, where he previewed his album for press. “He’s been M.I.A. for two to three months now. But I don’t feel bad, because Snoop can’t find him either,” he laughed.
“I think, really, it’s because people expect so much from him,” he continued. “People expect, when Dre does a record, it [will] change the trajectory of music. Not just be an album and it come out and be good. It has to come and take us in a different direction. And that’s a lot of pressure.”
Cube was able to recruit a stable of upstart producers and chart-toppers like Bangladesh (Lil Wayne, Beyoncé, Kelis) to work on I Am the West. The project pays homage to the classic gangsta-rap movement Cube helped shape. But records like “She Couldn’t Make It on Her Own” (featuring the rapper’s two sons), “Soul on Ice” and “It Is What It Is” display a range beyond Cube’s California roots. The first single, “I Rep That West,” was serviced to radio and features a clip directed by Gabriel Hart (Young Jeezy, Plies, B.o.B).
I Am the West track list, according to Ice Cube’s management:
» “A Boy Was Conceived”
» “Soul on Ice”
» “Live in California” (featuring Jayo Felony and WC)
» “She Couldn’t Make It on Her Own” (featuring OMG and Dough Boy)
» “Urbanian”
» “Y’All Know How I Am” (featuring OMG, WC, Dough Boy and Maylay)
» “Too West Coast” (featuring WC and Maylay)
» “I Rep That West”
» “Drink the Kool-Aid”
» “No Country for Young Me”
» “It Is What It Is”
» “Hood Robbin’ ”
» “Your Money or Your Life”
» “Nothin’ Like L.A.”
» “All Day, Everyday”
» “Fat Cat”

Sofia Coppola Talks Motherhood, Reality TV And ‘Somewhere’

Writer/director’s latest, starring Stephen Dorff and set at L.A.’s Chateau Marmont, premieres at the Venice Film Festival.By Josh Horowitz

Elle Fanning and Stephen Dorff in “Somewhere”

Photo: Focus Features

You could say Sofia Coppola’s work is primarily concerned with stories of lives playing out in the heady glow of fame or notoriety: the talk-of-the-town death-wishers in “The Virgin Suicides,” the lonely wife lounging in the fancy hotel while her husband hobnobs with celebs in “Lost in Translation,” the mercurial public and private life of the young queen of France in “Marie Antoinette.”
Now comes “Somewhere,” a film set at the famed Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles, where a restive hotshot actor (Stephen Dorff) whiles away his time until his adolescent daughter (Elle Fanning) shows up and forces him to reassess his ways of emptiness and agony. The settings might change — 18th-century France, modern-day Hollywood — but the themes and the existentially troubled atmosphere of Coppola’s films remain the same.
Yet the director describes “Somewhere” and “Lost in Translation” as her most personal films, in that she also penned both scripts, and audiences are sure to make many connections between the two. The soft-spoken Oscar nominee doesn’t seem to mind. In a recent phone conversation with MTV News as part of our Fall Movie Preview, she spoke openly about her inspirations for the new film and how her own life — from her time living abroad to becoming a mother for the first time — have influenced her creative decision making.
MTV: The title is “Somewhere.” Did you come up with it early on?
Sofia Coppola: Yeah, when I was first writing, that was just a temporary title until I thought of a real title and then it became the title.
MTV: Where did this film begin in your mind? What was the genesis?
Coppola: I’m not sure if it was the character or the setting for this one, but I think it started with wanting to write about Los Angeles, and I was living in Paris at the time. So thinking about Los Angeles, this character came into mind, that Stephen Dorff plays, and then I wanted to do a portrait of this guy and it took its shape from there. And then the character of his daughter came after, and that evolved into kind of the father/daughter part of the story.
MTV: What were you trying to capture about Los Angeles that may or may not have been captured in film before? Do you feel L.A. is ever captured well on film?
Coppola: I like “Shampoo” and “American Gigolo,” and I feel there hasn’t been a portrait of modern-day L.A. And I was just looking at how tabloid culture was while I was living in France. You know, there’s always stuff about the Chateau Marmont. I remember going there when I was in college, and now it’s so different with our reality TV shows and paparazzi around there. There wasn’t Us Weekly when I lived there. It was a different world and I started with wanting to do something set in that world.
MTV: Have you watched some of the reality shows that the people who sign my paycheck created?
Coppola: I haven’t watched tons of it, kind of a little here and there, but it just seems when you look at these tabloids, they’re all reality TV stars and definitely a focus on celebrity culture more than ever. But I’ve seen a few. The twins in my movie are from “The Girls Next Door.” So we do have some reality TV stars in it.
MTV: So Stephen’s character, can you not help but base your characters after different aspects of people that you know?
Coppola: No, he’s a combination of a ton of stories I’ve heard or different people’s experiences, and I have put them all together into my imagination of what this guy’s life is like. So it definitely is from people I know or stories I’ve heard.
MTV: Why was Mr. Dorff the guy for you?
Coppola: I just felt like he was the right guy for this part and I think he’s a really talented actor and he has a lot of heart and sweetness that I thought was important for this role. And it’s nice to see someone that’s not in a million movies every year. You don’t know everything about their personal life and all that.
MTV: As a parent, how much are you relaying your own experiences with the film?
Coppola: The movie’s the first thing I wrote since having a kid. I definitely think that changes your point of view or that it had an effect on what I was thinking about. So the character had a kid, and how it affected him was definitely part of the story.
MTV: What does the script for this one look like versus what I will see on the screen?
Coppola: I don’t think [scripts are] a blueprint, and I kind of stay open to what could happen. I don’t storyboard everything and have an exact plan. I think you have an idea of what you want. So the script is definitely what the movie is. I think, if you look back on it, it’s definitely from that but there’s a lot of improvisation, especially with Chris Pontius, who plays the buddy from “Jackass.” Part of why I cast him is because he’s great at improvising and coming up with things and he’s really great with kids. So I knew he would have a great interaction with Elle’s character.
MTV: Were there any exceptional improvisational moments that you captured that weren’t in the script?
Coppola: Yes, there are always happy accidents because when you’re being creative, it’s always the mistakes or things that you look forward to that make it real. I can’t think [of one] specifically, but I think just putting Chris Pontius and Elle in a room together, and Stephen, the three of them, it was fun to watch that interaction. There are definitely surprises.
MTV: Can you tell me a little bit about Elle?
Coppola: She’s 12 now. She was 11 when we were shooting. I was always impressed by her because she’s so natural. When she starts a scene, she doesn’t shift. You don’t see a big difference even though the character is different from her in real life. But I feel that she is really talented and I tried to stay out of her way and not interfere too much. And we talked about it and she had the impression of what I was trying. At the beginning, we did rehearsals, and we rehearsed with her and Stephen together, so she got an idea of it.
MTV: Would you say at this point in your career you’re a confident filmmaker?
Coppola: I don’t think you’re ever totally confident because you’re always pushing yourself into new territory to do something you haven’t done before. So it’s always scary, but I feel like I have a clear idea in my head when I start a movie of what it should feel like and what it should look like. So I guess it’s an intuitive thing, but I don’t ever feel confident. It’s scary. Besides that, I do have a strong opinion. That’s why I like directing, because you can be very opinionated.
MTV: Were you sensitive when making this to the comparisons to “Lost in Translation”?
Coppola: When I started writing it, I didn’t know what shape it was going to take, so I really didn’t think about that. But then after finishing it, I can definitely see that there are similarities. I’ve only written two original scripts, so I feel this and “Lost in Translation” are my most personal stories because it originates from me. So there are going to be links, because I think, like all creative people, you’re interested in similar themes that you revisit. I think each one of my movies has been a continuation of the last one.
MTV: Why use the Chateau Marmont? What are your memories from your time there?
Coppola: I just thought for this young actor guy in a moment of transition, that’s where he’d be staying. And there’s something impermanent about a hotel. Chateau Marmont is legendary in L.A. and it’s kind of a setting for show business. So it seemed like the natural place for it to take place. And I have memories of going there as a kid and then as an adult in L.A., and we would go out there and it was always filled with interesting people for people-watching and it has great stories and a lot of history that I wanted to be a part of it. But I wanted the iconic L.A. backdrop.
MTV: Do you feel the same need to pick the brain of your successful family members?
Coppola: I always am glad to have my dad when I need advice or mentoring. Sometimes I’ll show him [something] earlier on, but this one I had a more specific idea of how I wanted it to be and then I showed him when I was done. And my brother is the producer and he helped me a lot in the preproduction phase.
MTV: You’re premiering at Venice, right?
Coppola: Yeah, next week. It’s the first time we’re going to show an audience.
MTV: How do you feel about that? Do you get nervous?
Coppola: Yeah I’m excited to share it with the audience and [in Venice]. And the guys from Phoenix are going to be with us. But I’m excited and it’s also scary and nerve-racking to put it out there in the world for opinions and reactions. But I’m really happy with the way it turned out. I like it, so I hope other people will connect to it.

Jeremy Renner To Star In ‘Mission: Impossible IV’

‘Hurt Locker’ actor will appear alongside Tom Cruise in next ‘M:I’ installment.By Kara Warner

From “The Hurt Locker” to Hawkeye in “The Avengers” to a role opposite superspy Ethan Hunt, Jeremy Renner’s career is on the rise, as Paramount announced Thursday (August 26) that the Oscar-nominated actor will appear as an operative alongside Tom Cruise in “Mission: Impossible IV.”
According to Deadline, Paramount production chief Adam Goodman feels Renner “has a Daniel Craig quality” that he wants for the role. Sources tell the site that the studio was also looking for an actor who might be able to continue on with the franchise, should Cruise choose not to return in the future (Cruise is expected to return for a fifth installment).
Other actors considered for the role include Tom Hardy (“Inception”), Chris Pine (“Star Trek”), Kevin Zegers, Christopher Egan and Renner’s “Hurt Locker” co-star Anthony Mackie.
Although the production has had a few bumps and uncertainties along the way, Cruise has been vocal about his commitment to bring in new talent to the franchise. “My whole thing with the series is always having a new director come on and put their stamp on ‘Mission: Impossible,’ ” he told MTV News recently. “Brian De Palma was first, then John Woo, J.J. Abrams and now Brad Bird, so it will be Brad Bird’s ‘Mission: Impossible.’ ”
Regarding his thoughts on the story line — which is, of course, heavily under wraps — Cruise said simply: “It’s sick. It’s fun, really fun.”
Ever since his star-making turn in last year’s awards-season darling (and Best Picture winner) “The Hurt Locker,” Renner has been lining up a slate of prestigious and high-profile projects. He’ll next appear in Ben Affleck’s much buzzed about Boston drama “The Town,” followed by a stint as superhero Hawkeye in Joss Whedon’s “Avengers,” and then his role in “Mission: Impossible IV.”
The production, directed by Bird, with Cruise and J.J. Abrams producing, is set to begin shooting this fall.

Stanley Tucci Says ‘Captain America’ ‘Design Is Stunning’

The actor says the film is shot beautifully.By Mawuse Ziegbe

Marvel hero Captain America is known his unstoppable brawn so it’s a safe bet that moviegoers will check out a feast of out-of-this-world action scenes when “Captain America: The First Avenger” lands in theaters next summer. In addition to heart-stopping thrills, Stanley Tucci, who spent some of this summer filming the 2011 release, said that fans are in for a visually creative experience.

“[Director] Joe Johnston is a wonderful guy and I love the way he’s shooting it, it’s really interesting, it’s beautiful-looking,” Tucci told MTV News. The actor seemed awed by Johnston’s approach. “There’s a real power to it and the design is stunning.”
Tucci will portray Dr. Abraham Erskine, the lab wiz who develops the potent serum that endows Steve Rogers with super-human strength and effectively turns the weakling into Captain America. The Oscar-nominated star dished about the nuances of his character who, despite having developed the muscle-popping serum, is not just a crazed genius tinkering with chemicals. Tucci revealed that “he’s a combination of both” mad scientist and mild-mannered researcher.
Tucci, who will be seen next in the high-school comedy “Easy A,” heads back to shooting “Captain America” in the fall. So far, the actor, who is known for diverse roles ranging from Julia Child’s doting husband in “Julie & Julia” to a mega-fierce fashion insider in “The Devil Wears Prada,” is relishing his time on the “Captain America” set.
“So much fun,” Tucci gushed about filming. “I have to go back and … finish it in October but I was there for a few weeks in … end of July, August. It was great; a great experience.” The star chalked up his good times behind the scenes to his co-stars.
“Chris [Evans, who plays Captain America] is great, he’s a wonderful guy,” Tucci said. “Dominic [Cooper] and Hayley [Atwell] and Tommy Lee Jones – it’s great people.”

Lauryn Hill Calls Rock The Bells ‘Something Special’

Jay-Z, Beyoncé, Alicia Keys, Swizz Beatz and other famous admirers join the hometown girl onstage.By Shaheem Reid

Lauryn Hill performs at Rock the Bells on Saturday

Photo: Bennett Raglin/WireImage

NEW YORK — When you ask Lauryn Hill what it feels like to perform in New York City again, the legendary MC/vocalist simply says it’s “something special, home.”
“I thought it was great,” she told MTV News about this year’s Rock the Bells concept, which had each act performing a classic album out of their catalog. “I just wanted to be a part of it. As soon as they asked me, I was like, ‘That’s it. Let’s do it. Let’s do it.’ Joshua Boumel and Chang [Weisberg], who are promoters of this particular event, we have a little history. When they asked me, I was honored to be a part of it.”

In hip-hop, your longevity not only depends on your talent, but it also hinges on how deeply you pierce the people’s souls. Many fans don’t let an artist last a year without putting out music before they forget all about them and move on. A testament to Lauryn Hill’s opuses — The Score with the Fugees and her solo debut, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill — is that everyone is still anticipating what she will do next, though she hasn’t put out a studio album since 1998.
And while Rakim, KRS-One, Slick Rick, Snoop Dogg, the Wu-Tang Clan and A Tribe Called Quest perform classic albums from their catalog at this year’s Rock the Bells — which concludes Sunday (August 29) in Washington, D.C. — most of us have seen these icons in the past decade. Many of us haven’t seen Hill touch the stage in the past 10 years, and some have never seen her perform at all.
“Lauryn Hill, man,” Rakim said in his trailer last week at the RTB kickoff show in San Bernardino, California, when asked who he wanted to see. “I haven’t seen her in a while. I know it’s going to be a memorable thing. I’m amped. Lauryn, welcome back. We need you.”
Saturday night, when Rock the Bells touched down on New York’s Governor’s Island, tens of thousands of fans came out, and so did a multitude of celebrities. Jay-Z, Beyoncé, Swizz Beatz, Chris Rock, Alicia Keys, Bokeem Woodbine, Michael Ealy, John Legend, Tracy Morgan and Estelle were among the stars attending as fans.
“It was still amazing to watch her and her see her home in New York,” Estelle said backstage. “I’m a big kid again.”
Toward the end of her set — which included some Score songs and a few surprises, in addition to Miseducation tracks — Hill invited her children and some of the A-list attendees to the stage. During a reggae breakdown of “Fugee La,” Hill brought out Mary J. Blige. Beyoncé, Alicia Keys, Swizz Beatz and Chris Rock soon followed.
“Where’s Jay?” Hill said. “C’mon, man, this is New York.” And so the Jiggaman came out and saluted the fans. Next was John Legend and Jerry Wonder.
“It was love back. Love back. Love back,” Hill said later in her trailer about the parade of stars. Outside, Busta Rhymes — who was a guest performer of A Tribe Called Quest — came and said hello to her kids. “Reciprocity. It was wonderful to see everybody. I was so touched. I wanted everybody else to share in that moment. I wanted everybody else to see them.”
Hill said Rock the Bells was the perfect place for her to express some of her feelings, and she used the opportunity to drop some new rhymes and new variations on her classics. She also got a chance to reconnect to the fans. “I miss you. I miss you,” she repeated at the end of her set.
After Hill, A Tribe Called Quest continued the body-the-venue campaign they started in the West Coast shows — the crew from Queens was in sync like they never disbanded. They bodied the stage, killed it, with a smorgasbord of hits. The Large Professor and Busta Rhymes came out. Wu-Tang Clan also showed the tremendous energy that earns them an invitation to perform at Rock the Bells just about every year. And headliner Snoop showed why he got the closing spot. The Dogg had the most polished and elaborate sets of the tour.
“Rock the Bells is one of those few remaining hip-hop banners, concerts tours,” Hill said after the show. “We have the Summer Jams and things like that, but as far as independent festivals for hip-hop, they’re kind of some of the last people standing doing it. It’s an honor to be a part of it. Look at the company: awesome. Everybody’s doing it.”

Emmys Fashion: Kim Kardashian, Lea Michele Go Old-School Glam

Anna Paquin, January Jones and more take fashion risks that pay off at the awards show.By Jocelyn Vena

Kim Kardashian arrives at the 62nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards

Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images

In a sea of blush, beads and black, there was an overarching theme on the Emmy Awards red carpet Sunday night (August 29): old-school glam. With the men evoking such Hollywood icons as Cary Grant and Clark Gable, the women hit the carpet in gowns that harked back to the golden era of the silver screen, thanks to retro silhouettes and an emphasis on glamour.
Kim Kardashian paid homage to Elizabeth Taylor in a white Marchesa dress with a halter neckline and cape detailing and a big cuff by Lorraine Schwartz. “Glee” star Amber Riley took that same route, however, co-star Dianna Agron may have gone a bit too retro in a lilac-and-black-lace tiered dress that screamed “Gone With the Wind.”
Lea Michele hit the mark in Oscar de la Renta, even if the fit was a bit off. Her strapless navy ruched gown certainly made a statement with its crazy skirt and a diamond choker by Lorraine Schwartz. Keeping it with the Gleeks, the guys went standard-issue red carpet, thanks to tailored dark suits, but Kevin McHale made the look all his own with his thick-framed glasses and gold bow tie.
Then, there were the actors who vamped up the carpet. “True Blood” stars Rutina Wesley and Carrie Preston went bold in their printed gowns, but none as bold as Anna Paquin, who was gladiator chic in her Alexander McQueen gown with black and gold sequins. She also had the ultimate accessory, co-star and hubby Stephen Moyer, who kept it stylish in a suit and tie. “Vampire Diaries” star Nina Dobrev dazzled in a champagne ruched, one-shoulder gown with sparse beading that sparkled in just the right places.
The cast of “Mad Men” also made bold statements on the carpet. The über-voluptuous Christina Hendricks played to all her assets in a lilac ’40s-silhouette gown with feather detailing on the sleeves and hem, courtesy of Zac Posen. January Jones’ Versace blue strapless dress complete with fishtail will leave fashionistas split, thanks to its forward-thinking styling. Jon Hamm had girls swooning and wishing they were in girlfriend Jennifer Westfeld’s shoes in his well-tailored suit and bow tie.
Other red-carpet standouts included “Modern Family” star Julie Bowen in a navy, asymmetrical, strapless dress with peplum detailing. Kelly Osbourne also played it vintage in her ’40s-style black gown by Tony Ward. Not-so-desperate housewife Eva Longoria wore a black strapless dress with a detailed ruffle skirt by Robert Rodriguez, and Claire Danes rocked a gold-and-nude sequined, strapless Armani Prive dress with hanging stud earrings.

‘Avatar’ Star Stephen Lang Talks Crazy Fans, Villains And Na’vi Sex

‘I get a lot of people coming up to me and saying, ‘I really hate you,’ ‘ actor says of his villainous character.By Eric Ditzian

Stephen Lang

Photo: MTV News

Nine months after “Avatar” first came out and Stephen Lang found himself in the middle of a globe-blanketing PR campaign, the 58-year-old actor is getting a kick out of doing it all over again.
Following the $2.4 billion success of its original release, James Cameron’s “Avatar” is headed back to theaters on Friday, and Lang is back doing the interview circuit, amiable as always, in stark contrast to his scenery-chewing, do-not-cross-me villain in the 3-D blockbuster, Colonel Miles Quaritch. Stopping by the MTV newsroom recently, Lang chatted about the new footage in the “Avatar” special edition, how his career has changed in the last year and some of the crazy fans he encounters these days.

MTV: How’s it feel to be back in the world of Pandora?
Stephen Lang: Everybody’s entitled to a victory lap! Above and beyond that, there has been this hankering for more information about this world that Jim created, and Jim is responsive to that and excited to bring back some of the footage it was probably painful for him to cut in the first place.
MTV: Have you gone back and seen the new footage?
Lang: Yesterday, I viewed all the new stuff. I was surprised at how emotional it was, just to re-enter the world and to be reminded what an extraordinary period in my life this has been. I’ve been doing other things and “Avatar” subsided for a while and it’s been a lot of fun for it to rise up again.
MTV: Is there any new footage from Colonel Quaritch to look forward to?
Lang: There are bits and pieces of me. There’s a little bit more of my fighting, there’s a little bit more of my black-heartedness. There’s still plenty of Quaritch scenes that are somewhere else.
MTV: Yeah, I know you guys filmed a ton of stuff way back when. Were you hoping any of that got picked and given the finishing treatment?
Lang: I think that several scenes like that may well be on the DVD that comes out with lots of additional things. What Jim wanted to do here is showcase the planet itself — the creatures, the landscape. You see some creatures that you hadn’t seen before, and they’re stunning. There’s a love scene.
MTV: I was going to ask you about that — the extended Na’vi sex scene.
Lang: There’s an extended Na’vi sex scene, but that doesn’t cover it. It’s a very sensual and sensitive and sort of erotic scene. It’s the ultimate blue movie, you dig what I’m saying? But there’s no sex scene between Quaritch and [Sigourney Weaver's] Grace or anyone else, which is unfortunate.
MTV: How have things changed for you, personally and professionally, since the movie came out?
Lang: I don’t think that personally they’ve changed so much. I’m pretty set or formed. I’ve been kicking around a long time. I think I probably am happier than I was. I feel quite satisfied. I think every actor wants to be part of something that can be considered a piece of cinema in a significant way, and I feel that way with “Avatar.” I think professionally it certainly has goosed things for me. There are more interesting opportunities.
MTV: Are you getting a lot of the villain roles?
Lang: Some villains come across my desk. I read them. Of course, after doing Quaritch, who I admit is the villain of the piece, you tend to compare everything to that, and I don’t want to repeat myself, or I don’t want to do a pale reflection or imitation of myself. I like to think I have range as an actor. I’d really like to get the girl. And by “get the girl,” I don’t mean kill her!
MTV: Have you had any interactions with wacky fans? Anyone screaming at you on the street, “You’re not in Kansas anymore”?
Lang: I get a lot of people coming up to me and saying, “I really hate you.” And they say it in the nicest possible way and I accept it. It’s the people who come up to you and say, “I really liked your character. Man, he was right!” Those are the ones you worry about.
Check out everything we’ve got on “Avatar.”

Review: Dark Blue ? Brother?s Keeper

Editor’s note: For those of you paying attention, Dark Blue is the Jerry Bruckheimer-produced cop show on TNT, and it should not be confused with the far more entertaining Canadian import, Rookie Blue, on ABC. The team gets word that a gun running extremist is in the planning stages of a major political assassination. So Carter, Rice, and the rest of team decide to break the extremist’s brother out of jail. But things don’t go as planned when a third member is thrown into the mix. Now it’s a race against the clock to see who will break first. Carter, the mark, or the third man who no one wanted to see. What worked: Well, Dark Blue has graduated from piece of s**t to watchable. This episode as probably the best one of the season. And there was a lot that actually did work. Basically, it was classic undercover team for this episode. Not a whole lot of angst, just everyone doing their job. And more importantly, there was a clear goal that lead to a fairly decent resolution. That is something that has been missing from the show, every episode has been so convoluted that the writers forgot what the show was all about. But this episode was the first sign that things are slowly returning back to normal. What didn’t: With that said, this episode was still full of lame relationship gags, and pointless angst. First of all, I was under the assumption that Carter and Rice were [...]

Review: Takers

Takers assembles a motley crew of handsome men, decks them out in stylish suits and top hats, adds a dollop of crime, and shoots for the moon ? literally (yes, a character points his fingers at the moon and fires). Director John Luessenhop wants to craft an eloquent, pseudo-vintage crime drama out of mundane clichés. With just enough of an aesthete?s vision, a robust collection of photogenic actors (including the ridiculously beautiful Zoe Saldana), an R&B infused soundtrack, and some exciting, upper class heist action, he mostly fulfills that ambition. There?s not much more to be expected from a late summer picture likely to be all but forgotten come the start of the fall movie season next week. With expectations naturally diminished, it?s possible to sit through Takers, enjoy the scenery and have a good time, even if Luessenhop?s thriller often adopts the ?too cool for school? affectations of a meticulously blocked advertisement. Idris Elba and Paul Walker play the leaders of a posse of high-end thieves that love Italian suits and sleek under-lit clubs with leather chairs, marble counters, and shiny cocktail glasses. Also: smooth handling machine guns and loading up with enough cash to support indulgences such as a Hollywood Hills home sporting full glass windows overlooking an overflowing pool framed against panoramic views of the city below. As the film opens, the outfit (which also includes Hayden Christensen, Chris Brown and Michael Ealy) has pulled off another of its improbable, midday thefts. Preparing to skip town for [...]

Cee-Lo Reflects On Complex Career: ‘I’m A Book, Not A Magazine’

‘It is a continuation of the same revolution I have always talked about,’ he tells MTV News of his many genres.By Shaheem Reid

Cee-Lo

Photo: Gustavo Caballero/ Getty Images

The magical voice of Cee-Lo translates whether he’s singing songs that make immediate impact on pop radio like his latest single, “F— You,” or records that capture the hearts of the hip-hop community like his feature on Rick Ross’ “Tears of Joy.” For the Atlanta legend, he said singing is a perfect way to release his pain and that he will continue to show his versatility.

“It’s simple, man. Me and Ross got history. We holla,” Lo said about the latter record. “On the few occasions that we’ve met, it’s always love and admiration. To do the record, of course it would have to been the right record. Who would have known ‘Tears of Joy’ would have been so immediate and apparently urgent of a song? It reverberated immediately. I’m never too quick to say, ‘This is a hit record.’ I don’t even know how to talk like that. Each artistic endeavor of mine has always been an act of faith. I don’t really know. I’m only doing what my heart and gut tells me to do. But I already know what comes out my mouth is different. Then again, there’s something so signature about the ‘Tears of Joy’ joint. It reminds you — especially my fellow Southerners — it reminds you of a Goodie Mob record.”
When Lo ran into Ross earlier this year in L.A., the Miami kingpin told him about the song he wanted to collaborate on. Ross sent the song off, and in two weeks, it was completed.
“He had verses on it already,” Cee-Lo said. “But [the words] ‘Tears of Joy’ is all I needed. Ross did Ross, which is great. [The song] represents the contrast/contradiction which is life.”
Cee-Lo said “Tears of Joy” almost represents a “homecoming” for him in the eyes of some fans to his soulful roots, first introduced with Outkast and his group Goodie Mob. Cee-Lo also argued that he’s actually never left those musical beginnings; he’s just simply ventured out and experimented on such projects as Gnarls Barkley’s two LPs to show his peers and the fans how far hip-hop could go and to express his different sides.
“It is a continuation of the same revolution I have always talked about,” he insisted. “It’s the fact that people don’t know me completely. I’m just now telling you more about myself. I’m a book, not a magazine.”
Lo’s next album, Lady Killer, comes out later this year, and he’s also working on the next album from the Mob.
“The solo album is something completely different,” he revealed. “I got that mixtape out there, Stray Bullets, which is a prequel to the album Lady Killer. That’s got nothing to do with what I do with Goodie, besides quality. But Goodie, man, that’s what ‘Tears of Joy’ represents. I hope people can see the bigger picture. None of that is lost in me. I ain’t got so rich and famous that I separated from the soul. That’s me, that’s what I’m about. It’s on the tip of my tongue at all times. It’s people wanting that and needing that, that’s all the incentive I need. That’s what makes my life worth living, especially when I remember there was time I ain’t have nothing constructive to say. So any time I can do it, I feel like I’m further ensuring good favor in my rights of passage, being pleasing in the sight of my maker. It truly means that much to me. My pain runs deep. All of that is behind what I got to sing.”
For anyone wondering when Cee-Lo will make a full-throttle return to rapping, he said it will be on the Goodie Mob reunion LP, which doesn’t have a release date yet.
“When people be asking why I don’t rap no more, it’s not that. … It’s gotta come,” he explained. “I’mma isolate that to the Goodie Mob. That’s all I care to rap about. Rappin’ is like a contact sport. It’s an attitude. So the only thing I get angry about is the calls [about me not rapping]. That makes me wanna fight. As far as somebody stepping on my shoes, because we standing too close to each other, I don’t have that problem. Nobody does what I do. I don’t have no conflict. So I can do what eases my mind. I do believe that music is not meant to agitate; it’s meant to soothe the savage beast. I’m one of them beasts. It soothes me. I’m impressed, because I can separate myself from it and give credit to a higher power. It ain’t really me. To be able to sing is a blessing to me. But really, you hurt so bad, sometimes I can’t even rap about it. I gotta sing. That’s why it always hurts a little bit no matter what I’m singing. There’s pain in it. As far as Goodie goes, I got that. That’s all I’m trying to tell y’all.”
Lady Killer has a tentative release date in December.

Let’s face it, Jessica Alba is known for her sexy factor. No matter what role she’s in, be it a superhero (“Fantastic Four”), a pharmaceutical sales rep (in the upcoming “Little Fockers”) or an immigration officer (this week’s “Machete”), Alba’s addition to any cast turns up its heat.

Such is even the case with Robert Rodriguez’s “Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World.” When MTV News caught up with the actress and her director at the L.A. premiere of “Machete” earlier this week, we asked them how her casting came to be.
“I was so inspired, seeing her on [the 'Machete'] set trying to be beautiful for the camera and yet having to [run off] to change her baby’s diaper,” Rodriguez explained. “I thought, ‘You know what, that would be great as a spy mom, I’ve got to write that in.’ ”
And since Rodriguez is the writer/director/creator of the “Spy Kids” franchise, he did just that. “I wrote that into the script, based on her,” he said of what will be his third film with Alba.
The 28-year-old actress/mom said she’s most looking forward to working with Rodriguez again — and to eating more of the director’s specialty: homemade margherita pizza with jalapeños.
Moving forward, Rodriguez has yet to cast his new titular spy kids, the husband to Alba’s spy wife/mom or the villain Time Keeper. Original “Spy Kids” Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara, as well as their onscreen dad, Antonio Banderas, are expected to play supporting roles. Production is set to begin next month.
Check out everything we’ve got on “Machete.”

Mrs. Junkfood Cinema: Cutthroat Island

Editor’s Note: Toni Salisbury is guest-writing this week on behalf of her husband who is taking one of those breaks that you need after eating 18 hot pockets on a “dare.” Welcome back, Cinema Junkies. Your regular host–the connoisseur of crap, maitre d’ miserable, reviewer of the rotten and lover of lost causes, Brian Salisbury–is taking a brief hiatus to restock his celluloid pantry with the most fattening films he can find. And like a doting father loathes to leave his child with a strange, menacing babysitter for the first time, he asked Mrs. Junkfood to smooth the transition. Which I would do if this column WOULD JUST STOP SCREAMING! THEN I WOULDN’T HAVE TO SHAKE IT! (note: I have never shaken a baby, and neither should you. Ever.) With that in mind, I invite the reader to indulge his (or her) weekly appetite for the ridiculously bad (and bad-for-you) film and food pairing that is Junkfood Cinema. Since nature documentaries are hardly ever anything but vegan-like in mental effect, I chose to review the only film I repeatedly watch that both lowers my IQ and raises my cholesterol at the same time. It is the most pungent of the stinkers, the limpest of the flops, feature-filmiest of B movies–and my personal go-to-in-the-dark-of-night-when-no-one’s-around-and-God-help-you-if-you-catch-me-watching-this-guilty-pleasure movie: Cutthroat Island. What Makes It Bad? Most of the clearance bin fodder glorified in this column end up in their sorry states due to budgets that make couch cushion change look exorbitant. Not so with Renny [...]

Jersey Shore Shop Owners Welcome Snooki And Company Back Home

‘You can’t pay for the exposure we’ve got,’ says Danny Merk, who owns the store where the cast worked in season one.By James Montgomery, with reporting by Ignacio Guzman

In addition to keeping local law enforcement busy (really busy), the stars of MTV’s “Jersey Shore” have also made an impact of a different sort on the town of Seaside Heights, New Jersey: an economic one.

Seems business is booming on the boardwalk, especially now that the show is back in town to tape its third season. Seaside Heights Business Improvement District executive director Maria Maruca probably summed it up best when she told MTV News earlier this year that “we can’t even calculate the economic benefit” the show brings to the community.
“There’s the curiosity factor,” she said. “Celebrities draw crowds. That’s going to give us an edge that we didn’t have before. The exposure that the show brought to Seaside Heights — when every late-night host is talking about Snooki, when Leonardo DiCaprio is talking about the show — we could never have afforded that type of media. This is more than we could ever have asked for.”
So, determined to find out just how Snooki and company have helped out local businesses, we trekked out to the boardwalk and asked owners of some of Seaside’s best-known shops — some of which have already been featured prominently on the show.
” ‘Jersey Shore’ has helped Seaside Heights [in] both winter and summer. We get people coming in here every day looking for the cast,” said Michael Carbone, owner of the Beachcomber Bar and Grill (the same place where Snooki was hit last season). “You go down by the house, there’s a hundred people standing outside, every day. Business is up, the town is up. People come here for the ‘Jersey Shore.’ ”
The Beachcomber benefits doubly, as it has a catering contract with MTV and, according to an NBC News report, serves thousands of meals for the 130 crew members who work on the “Shore.”
“It’s helped everybody. Businesses in town, the motel owners, even the crew that makes the show have been patrons of my bar every night,” Carbone said. “We are hoping the show runs for years and years to come. … It’s a big craze, and it’s doing very well for everybody.”
Those sentiments are echoed by Danny Merk, who owns the Shore Store, where the cast of the show (sorta) worked during season one.
“It’s been busy in here all the time now. It’s great that I own a gift shop … people wanna buy little souvenirs. T-shirts. Little things, and this is the place to be at,” he said. “But it’s helped all the business on the boardwalk, because you can’t just shop at one store. … You can’t pay for the exposure we’ve got.
“It came out of nowhere, [and] all of a sudden the kids came down here. They worked like average kids during the day, went out to the clubs at night,” he continued. “Now, it’s just nonstop. Everyone wants to see what they are doing. What did they do, what places they went to. They want to be like them. A lot of people just worship them.”
Even though his store wasn’t featured on the show, Mike Rariden’s Adrenaline Body Piercing and Tattoo shop has definitely reaped the benefits of the toned (and tatted) “Jersey Shore” kids — even if he can’t seem to comprehend just why.
” ‘Jersey Shore’ has definitely brought a lot more people out than it has been in previous years. Everybody is trying to get in on the action, get on the show, meet the cast and crew,” he said. “They’ve definitely increased business a lot. … [There's] a big population of younger kids that all look at Snooki as their hero. I don’t know why, but, hey.”
Don’t miss “Jersey Shore” every Thursday at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV.

Review: Futurama ? Lrrreconcilable Ndndifferences

After a failed attempt to conquer earth, Ndnd throws Lrrr out of Omicron Persei 8. So Lrrr begins his mid-life crisis on earth in the company of Bender. But things don’t go as planned when earth is actually “conquered” by Lrrr and now Ndnd wants him back. Now he must choose between the friends that actually care for him, or the one he loves dearly. While at the same time Fry tries to get his amateur comic book off the ground and into the hands of millions at Comic Con. What worked: This episode was a nerd’s wet dream. It was meta, it was topical, it was historical, it was just flat out funny. Beginning with the stuff at Comic-Con, I was blown away when I saw Matt Groening and Co. in glass jars making cancellation jokes. And the second Bender made The Simpsons Movie 2 joke, I nearly pissed myself, I’m a huge fan of meta, and this episode of Futurama was all over it. Then there’s the second act involving Orson Wells. Honestly, Wells is probably the last person I would’ve ever expected to see depicted in the series. I would be less shocked to see a portrayal of Glen Beck, to be honest. This where I was confirmed that this episode is for the hardcore nerds out there, as most of the average viewership probably has no clue who Orson Wells is. Please note I said “average viewership,” so anyone who provides a hateful comment to this [...]

Nikki Reed Gushes About ‘Twilight’ Co-Stars’ Upcoming Projects

‘We all root for each other,’ she tells MTV News.By Kara Warner

Photo: MTV News

Ever since the first “Twilight” film was released — kicking off the phenomenon that has included record-breaking box-office numbers, fainting fans, megawatt premieres, etc. — the suddenly superstar cast has been catapulted into a spotlight none of them saw coming. As such, the actors are very much in demand and currently working on a number of projects.
When Nikki Reed stopped by MTV News recently to discuss her film “Last Day of Summer,” we asked her which of her co-stars’ upcoming films she’s most excited to see.

“All of them,” she said. “I love Taylor [Lautner] so much, and I’m so proud of him and what he’s doing. He’s making a great movie in Pittsburgh right now,” she said, referring to the John Singleton-directed action thriller “Abduction.”
“I’m excited about Rob [Pattinson]‘s movie ‘Water for Elephants,’ ” she added. “I think he’s going to be phenomenal in that, and Kristen [Stewart] is doing an amazing film ['On the Road']. Elizabeth Reaser just did a movie called ‘Homework’ with Michael Angarano, who’s a really good friend of mine, and Emma Roberts that I’m excited about.”
Reed and her co-stars have so many projects going that she was hard-pressed to remember everyone’s work schedule. “We all root for each other,” she said.
Speaking of which, the multi-talented and multi-tasking actress, who recently directed Sage’s music video for “Edie Sedgwick,” lit up at our question about whether she would consider directing a music video for her co-star Jackson Rathbone’s band, 100 Monkeys.
“Would I ever! Jackson and I are on the phone every other day, because we’re trying to find a movie to do together. I forgot to mention him — his band is skyrocketing. It’s amazing,” she gushed. “I would be honored. I don’t want to take the position: ‘Would I ever.’ If he would ever let me, yeah. I love them.”

Jay Hernandez Says He ‘Grew Up Watching’ ‘Takers’ Co-Star Matt Dillon

‘I’ve seen him in, I don’t even know how many films,’ Hernandez says.By Shaheem Reid

Actor Jay Hernandez didn’t get a chance to appear in too many scenes with the “bad guys” of the film “Takers.” His character, detective Eddie Hatcher, spends a considerable amount of time with his onscreen partner Jack Welles — played by Matt Dillon — trying to crack a bank-heist case.
Hernandez says he had a ball working with Dillon, the O.G. of the ensemble cast, which also includes as the gang of Takers: T.I., Idris Elba, Paul Walker, Hayden Christensen, Chris Brown and Michael Ealy.

Zoe Saldana’s Lingerie Ad: Behind the Scenes Look

Shooting to stardom thanks to her “Avatar” role, Zoe Saldana has since landed herself the dream job as the face of Calvin Klein’s new Eny line of women’s underwear.
Having revealed the print ads earlier this month, fans have now been treated to a TV commercial preview before the much-awaited ad spot debuts on the E! Network before the Emmy Awards on Sunday night (August 29).
Executive vice president of global communications at Calvin Klein Inc., Malcolm Carfrae, previously told WWD that Zoe’s Envy campaign will be ?one of the biggest launches in the brand?s history.”
As for her take on ladies’ undergarments, Saldana said, ?I like when you are able to assist your body to look amazing as opposed to replacing anything. That?s exactly what Calvin Klein Underwear Envy does. It helps you, it assists you, but it will not overshadow what you can bring naturally.?

Criterion Files #478: Last Year at Marienbad

Alain Resnais is one my favorite filmmakers, and it?s largely because of his early work. Between Night and Fog (1955), Hiroshima mon amour (1959), and this week?s film, Last Year at Marienbad (1961), Resnais? late 50s-early 60s work represents a sort of trilogy meditating on the themes of trauma and memory. While these first two films address these subjects specifically in regard to resonating painful memories of WWII (the subject of Night and Fog being concentration camps, and Hiroshima mon amour clearly being Hiroshima), Marienbad?s narrative avenue towards this subject isn?t rooted in globally relevant history. Rather, Last Year at Marienbad switches gears to tell a story of memory loss between two socialites at a baroque hotel, one of whom (the man, played by Girgio Albertazzi) remembers a brief but passionate affair from the previous year, while the other (the woman, played by Delphine Seyrig) doesn?t. As the film progresses, the woman?s behavior suggests that maybe they had actually encountered one another the previous year and the man isn?t mistaken by fantasy, but he may be mistaken in that it was a consensual affair when it could have been something far darker, and the woman may have suppressed the memory of whatever happened last year at Marienbad. Debates over what actually occurred that past year ultimately matter not, however, as Last Year at Marienbad is hardly a mystery film as much as it is an exercise in illustrating the complexities and problems of human memory when tied to intense emotions [...]

Zac Efron and Nicolas Sparks: A Perfect Match

It was inevitable that Zac Efron would eventually be sucked into the sappy world of the writer that continues to churn out schmaltzy crap while believing he’s the next great writer of Greek Tragedies. If there’s another actor out there better suited for the next Nicolas Sparks movie, I don’t know him. Which is probably a reason he should fire his publicist. Efron has signed on for The Lucky One where he’ll play – wait for it – a Marine who has been deployed thrice to Iraq and has lived through every tour, he believes, because of the good luck brought to him by a photograph of a woman he doesn’t know. Because it’s sweet, and not creepy, he tracks the woman down when he gets home. What. The. I admit openly that The Notebook was a good romance, but everything Sparksian since has been so maudlin and false and forced and evil that it’s been like swallowing a gallon of whale bile while someone swears to you that it’s honey. Or, actually, it might just be like swallowing a gallon of honey. That sounds awful. I’ve never read the book (I think the guys at Latino Review have), but I can spoil the movie right now if you’d like. Efron’s character will be charming and a bit of a rogue. He’ll come home, track down the girl, and they’ll spark up a relationship despite the fact that trying to find a beautiful woman in a photograph usually earns you [...]

Jessica Alba Looks Dangerously Hot at Machete Premiere While Lindsay Lohan Skips Out

Jessica Alba stole the show at last night’s Machete premiere at the Orpheum Theater in LA. She posed with the director Robert Rodriguez, who she’s already getting ready to team up with again on Spy Kids 4, as well as costars Michelle Rodriguez and Danny Trejo. Jessica arrived in a bright orange low rider, adding to the kitschy, colorful feel of the film. Jessica’s husband Cash Warren liked his wife’s new ride and her cool castmates. One of the movie’s most famous names didn’t make the screening – Lindsay Lohan was released from rehab on Tuesday evening, in time to attend the event, but she skipped out on making her return to the red carpet. Still, Alba and the rest of the crew sent LL their best and excitedly talked up the project before it hits theaters on Sept. 3.

What Cinematically-Themed Tattoo Would You Get?

You’ve stumbled upon Circle of Jerks, our sporadically published, weekly feature in which we ask the questions that really matter to our writers and readers. It’s a time to take a break from our busy lives and revel in the one thing that we all share: a deep, passionate love of movies. If you have a question you’d like answered by the FSR readers and staff, send us an email at editors@filmschoolrejects.com. Our inaugural question comes from Managing Editor, Cole Abaius. I recently took the plunge by getting my second tattoo. In an effort to display my love of films while avoiding the cliched “Howard the Duck With Your Nipple As His Eyeball” that’s so popular with the kids these days, I chose to get a crystal clear rendering of the spaceship-crashed moon from A Trip to the Moon (the first science fiction film). It’s something that will be with me forever. Keeping that eternal aspect in mind, what cinematically-themed tattoo would you get? Landon Palmer This isn?t exactly consistent with the rules, but I would get a tattoo of 70s-era Woody Allen in the ?Say hello to my little friend? pose from the ending shootout of De Palma?s Scarface. Not only would this tattoo make for quite the conversation-starter in almost any social circle, it brings together communities of filmgoers who have tastes that could not be more disparate. It isn?t so much a tattoo showing love for a certain film, but instead represents a vague, arguably unattainable ideal [...]

Nikki Reed Explains Bella And Rosalie’s ‘Breaking Dawn’ Bond

The onetime rivals’ love for baby Renesmee is ‘the one thing that’s strong enough to bring them together.’By Kara Warner

Nikki Reed

Photo: MTV News

With “Eclipse” about to leave theaters and a sizable gap between the release dates of “Breaking Dawn – Part 1″ and “Part 2,” the “Twilight” news seems hard to come by these days — at least until the cast starts filming “Dawn” this fall.

Lucky for us, MTV News caught up with Nikki Reed recently to talk about her upcoming indie film “Last Day of Summer” co-starring DJ Qualls, and, naturally, the conversation veered into “Breaking Dawn” territory. As fans and readers of Stephenie Meyer’s final “Twilight” book know, Reed’s character Rosalie and Kristen Stewart’s Bella form an unexpected bond late in the series. We asked her thoughts on how the relationship between the two women changes in the final two films.
“What is that saying: Nothing makes two people bond more than the hate of another?” Reed said. “I kind of feel like that [describes Bella and Rosalie's relationship], but in relation to love in ‘Breaking Dawn,’ because they both love this child so much.”
Speaking of Bella and Edward’s much-discussed baby, Renesmee, Reed explained that a shared love unites the two. “I think it’s finally the one thing that’s strong enough to bring them together — their love for this [child]. It’s bizarre,” Reed said, since in the books and the films Bella and Rosalie don’t exactly get along perfectly. “It’s like they learn to co-exist for the sake of the kid, almost like they’re a divorced couple.”
Reed has also said that her character’s motivations for wanting Bella to have the baby at all costs are all about that love she has for the child, not politics.
“I think that Rosalie just always wanted to be a mom, and that’s how I look at it,” she said. “It has nothing to do with being pro-life or anything. I think it’s about her want, her need to be a mother, and this is the only opportunity she’s ever going to have, so she’s willing to let Bella die so she can have that and fulfill that, and that’s how I look at it. It’s her own personal desires.”

Review: Rescue Me ? Good-Bye

Picking up right where last week left off, Mickey has shown up at the Gavin home after walking in on Tommy and Shelia. It isn’t long before Janet finds out and now Tommy must convince her that it’s over between him and Shelia. At the same time, Damien begins to seriously consider leaving the FDNY for good after a heart-to-heart with Mickey. To the point that he puts his papers in with Feinberg. Lou also gets some very depressing news about his health and his future as a fire fighter. And when the crew gets a call tonight, one of them won’t be making it back for the nightly ball busting session. What worked: I really liked the opening scene of the show. It’s not often that Rescue Me picks up immediately following the episode from the week before. And I was expecting the Mickey situation to drag out for the entire hour, so to have it dealt with before the theme songs hits, I greatly appreciated that. I’m also back on board with the Lou, health situation. Till now it’s been dragging and dragging, and frankly just boring me to tears. But an ultimatum has finally been laid down for Lou. The job, or his life. To be honest, based on what we know of the 62 truck crew, the job and their lives go hand in hand. As for Damien… I’m speechless. I was really expecting for Lou to suffer the fate that Damien suffered. It’s not uncommon [...]

Can Lindsay Lohan Make A Comeback?

‘She’ll either be forgotten, she’ll be dead, tragically, or she’ll have an Academy Award,’ one PR expert tells MTV News.By Gil Kaufman

Lindsay Lohan

Troubled actress Lindsay Lohan has completed her jail term (13 of 90 days) and, on Tuesday, her court-ordered stint at an inpatient rehab facility (23 of 90 days). So now that she’s back on the outside, can the onetime rising Hollywood starlet get her career groove back?
Though the annals of Tinseltown are littered with stories of crackups that actors and actresses were unable to bounce back from, Lohan need look no further than Oscar winner Robert Downey Jr. for proof that once-left-for-dead careers trashed by drugs and erratic behavior can indeed be revived and thrive once again.

Vampire Weekend’s Contra Cover Girl Talks Lawsuit

Former model and photographer go back and forth in new Vanity Fair over album art.By James Montgomery

Vampire Weekend’s <i>Contra</i>

Photo: XL

In a new Vanity Fair story, both sides in the ongoing Vampire Weekend Contra cover-girl lawsuit — that would be former model Ann Kirsten Kennis and photographer Tod Brody — sound off. (VW refused to comment.) And judging from what they have to say, this thing isn’t going to be resolved anytime soon.
At the heart of the suit (which Kennis’ lawyer, Alan Neigher, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court back in July) is a single Polaroid of the towheaded model taken in 1983 and whether Vampire Weekend, XL Recordings or Brody ever attained Kennis’ permission to use it on the now-famous cover of VW’s Contra album. The band, the label and the photographer all insist they followed the appropriate steps — even getting a signed release from Kennis — while she claims she was unaware that her image was being used by the band and any release is certainly a forgery.
“It felt like someone was exploiting me,” Kennis told VF. “Who do these people think they are that they can just take my picture from God only knows where and plaster it everywhere?”
In her lawsuit, Kennis claims that Vampire Weekend purchased the photograph of her for $5,000 from Brody, who claims he took the picture in the summer of 1983 during a casting session for a television commercial. (Over the course of her career, Kennis appeared in print and TV ads for companies like L’Oreal, Revlon and Jordache, to name just a few.) But Kennis disputes that assertion and says Brody didn’t shoot the Polaroid — she thinks her mother might have.
“It’s not even like it’s a Polaroid before a photo shoot, because the hair’s not done, the makeup’s not done, the lighting’s not done. Nothing. It almost looks like somebody caught me by surprise,” she said. “The other thing that’s strange about this photo is that it’s not taken [in front of a] seamless [backdrop] like it would be in a photographer’s studio. You can see a doorframe there and hinges right in the background.”
Brody, not surprisingly, disagrees, telling VF that there were “probably a dozen people in the room” when the Polaroid was taken, among them representatives for the ad agency and the commercial’s director.
“We probably saw 20 or 30 [models] that day,” he said. “I don’t think I held on to any of the other [Polaroids] from that day. I wish I had, frankly, because they all would have been taken up against the same wall.”
Brody’s claim is backed up by Kennis’ former agent, Sue Charney, who said: “To me, it is very clearly a Polaroid taken at a casting session.”
Brody adds that he kept the photo of Kennis because he “thought it was a cool photo” and that it had been tacked onto a wall in his studio, along with “hundreds of Polaroids.” But he wouldn’t comment on the contested photographic release form or how the photo ended up in Vampire Weekend’s possession, saying, “I’m not going to address the merits of her case or anything else … we will try that in court, not in Vanity Fair or in the media.”
Kennis’ suit was filed in California, one of the 28 states in the U.S. that honors the right of publicity, which makes the release form all-important. If it is found to be authentic by a judge, Kennis will likely have no legal claim. But if a judge decides the release is fake, she may have a very strong claim to misappropriation of identity, and therefore could be entitled to millions. In a 2005 California case, a jury awarded ex-model Russell Christoff $15.6 million after concluding that an unauthorized image of his face accounted for 5 percent of sales of Taster’s Choice coffee.

Avatar Special Edition Blu-Ray On the Way… With 16 Minutes of Additional Footage

Thought James Cameron would stop at the 9 extra minutes of footage edited back into the theatrical re-release of Avatar? Think again. Cameron is apparently preparing no less than 16 additional minutes of material for a forthcoming special  edition Blu-Ray, which The Hollywood Reporter claims will “involve action sequences and narrative-deepening extensions of key scenes involving the blue-skinned Na’vi of Pandora and their human visitors.” “There’s a whole new scene that takes place in the (Na’vi) school, there’s more night bioluminescence, there’s new creatures, and there is a new action scene,” said producer Jon Landau. “The scenes don’t just feel like added scenes — they are very organic to the story and embellish it.” So, then why go see Avatar in theaters if you’re not getting all the extra footage? Well, it turns out that this special edition disc won’t be in 3D, that’s why! Cameron and Fox have decided to hold the 3D version off until 2011, when they hope more 3D TVs will be installed in homes. In industry speak, that means, “bleed them dry.” The extended, non 3-D cut of Avatar will be available on store shelves this November. What do you guys think? Do we really need 3 different releases of Avatar?

Chris Brown Says No Usher Tour … For Now

Singer also calls breakdown during Michael Jackson tribute his ‘ultimate apology.’By Gil Kaufman

Rumors have been swirling that Chris Brown is planning to tour with pal Usher. And even though reps for both singers declined to comment on the possible joint outing, the singers have been stoking the hype machine with provocative tweets for weeks.
On Tuesday, Brown finally responded to the reports during an appearance on BET’s “106 & Park” show to promote his part in the film “Takers” and talk about his single from the movie, “Deuces.”
First the bad news: It’s not happening. Though it could come together in the future, right now Brown said he’s focused on his own career, which has sputtered in the wake of his guilty plea for felony assault of former girlfriend Rihanna.
“At first we were talking about it, but I think maybe something in the future. But right now, I’m just doing the whole Chris Breezy thing,” he said, polling the screaming audience for interest in either a solo or joint tour. Brown rolled out a short theater swing in support of the slow-selling Graffiti album last fall, but has not staged a larger tour to date and was barred from taking the outing overseas by British immigration officials due to his felony plea.
The rumors of the Usher/Breezy jaunt were first sparked by a joint appearance in late July at Reggae SumFest in Jamaica, during which they sang and danced together and were joined by reggae star Elephant Man. A few weeks later, the pair began teasing a possible co-headlining tour, with Brown tweeting, “What would you guys say if me and Usher went on tour?”
That speculation went into overdrive when producer Bryan-Michael Cox said on Jermaine Dupri’s “Living the Life” YouTube show that the tour was definitely on. “Usher and the boy Chris Brown are going on tour, y’all know that, right?” Cox said. Dupri immediately replied, “They might not know that.” But after the cat was let out of the bag, Cox admitted, “I might’ve just gave y’all some exclusive sh–.”
Cox later backpedaled, tweeting that he was drunk when he dropped the news and was just “talking crazy,” adding, “I don’t know for a fact that THAT tour is happening. But it would be dope.”
Reps for both singers did not respond to multiple requests for comment about the possible co-headlining tour, and no confirmation was ever given on plans for the outing.
Brown was also asked on Tuesday about his now-famous teary meltdown during a Michael Jackson tribute at the BET awards in June, and he explained why he got so emotional during the event.
“A lot of people don’t know, I was going to see Michael Jackson the day he died,” said Brown, who has long talked about his admiration for the late King of Pop. “I was on my way to the Staples Center to see him [the day he died] … When I heard ‘Man in the Mirror,’ the words started speaking to me in my personal life. It just touched me. It wasn’t fake. I know people were trying to put extras on it, but everything was genuine. That was my ultimate apology, hands down.”

Review: Hung ? ?Third Base?

Episode: ?Third Base or The Rash? (Season 2, Episode 8) Synopsis: Ray considers playing in the Alumni game while Tanya’s double-dealing with “The White Whale” teeters on the edge of discovery. Ronnie and Jessica’s marriage develops a crack via a rash. Review: Hung is very lucky to have an actor as magnetic as Tom Jane in the lead role. By now you know we Rejects get at least half-hard-ons for Jane, but it is his presence alone that keeps me interested in this series when the show begins to falter. When he’s off-screen, I find myself likely to stare out the window. Or, at least, much of the time, though in the last few episodes Mike’s subplot about his quest for true love while Tanya play-pimps him out unbeknownst has been great. Last week I mentioned I was happy to see Ray finally realize what it means to connect with a woman: lies. (I would never lie to you ladies. WinkWink) In this episode Ray put his new-found pimp-mastery to work by securing a repeat date with a former customer all on his own. As long as he remembered to grab the cash before heading out, he’s done alright. Though how a woman could tear your rotator cuff while you’re fingering her, I hope to never find out. Actually. If I had to have my rotator cuff torn, that would probably be the way I’d want to do it. Ohsnapson. On the winning side of things, the show gave us a rare, [...]

Adrien Brody and Jonathan Rhys Meyers Being Considered for Fantastic Four Reboot?

With the bar for comic book movies constantly being raised, and the growing suspicion that super hero adaptations may be reaching critical mass, 20th Century Fox is planning on rebooting the Fantastic Four franchise before it’s too late. Apparently, this time around, they’re looking to make The Thing completely CG and step up the caliber of actor. That’s why ScreenRant is reporting that Oscar winner Adrien Brody and Jonathan Rhys Meyers are in consideration for the role of Mr. Fantastic. Brody has proven that he can do bigger action fare with the explosive Predators, and Rhys Meyers isn’t far behind with From Paris With Love, so either actor would be a good choice to fill the role of Fantastic Four’s elastic leader. And while I personally don’t see the rush in bringing a completely retooled version of the fearsome foursome to the big screen (the last film was only a few years ago… usually reboots take decades to generate steam), it seems Marvel and the studios are scrambling to do right by the fans. At least, it seems, they’re looking to take the property more seriously. What do you guys think? Which actor would be better for Mr. Fantastic?

Paris Has a New Pet!

We all know Paris Hilton loves having pets right? Her mansion in Beverly Hills has a mini-mansion inside it especially for all her little dogs and she also has a small collection of exotic birds. Yesterday Paris showed off her newest puppy, called Mugsy, ok so he is not exactly a puppy, she has just adopted him and he is a fully grown Pug. Many animal lovers have attacked Paris, saying she shouldn’t have so many animals and that she doesn’t pay enough attention to her dogs, but we are not sure. They live in a mansion and probably get the best food and even manicures and pedicures and all that luxury stuff, so we think any dog Paris adopts is actually pretty lucky…Related articlesWho’s the Man Candy Paris Hilton?Paris Hilton Sued for $35 million! What Could Paris, Kelly and Brandy Have To Talk About?Paris Hilton Attempts to be a Marilyn!

‘Expendables’ Continues Box Office Domination

Stallone and crew hold down the #1 spot for the second week in a row.By Mawuse Ziegbe

Sylvester Stallone in “The Expendables”

The Box-Office Top Five
#1 “The Expendables” ($16.5 million)
#2 “Vampires Suck” ($12.2 million)
#3 “Eat Pray Love” ($12 million)
#4 “Lottery Ticket” ($11.1 million)
#5 “The Other Guys” ($10.1 million)
“The Expendables” continues to spank the competition at the box office. The firepower-packed flick closed out the weekend with $16.5 million in ticket sales. The Sylvester Stallone ode to macho action movies has raked in a total of $64.9 million throughout its two-week run in theaters.
“Vampires Suck” lagged behind “Expendables” with $12.2 million. The horror spoof, which takes several shots at pop-culture’s current fascination with smoldering, mortal-loving vampires, took the second-place slot. The film has stacked $18.6 million in ticket receipts since the comedy hit theaters on Wednesday.
“Eat Pray Love” continued to cull a steady stream of theatergoers with a weekend draw of $12 million. “Vampires” just barely fended off the Julia Roberts vehicle, which settled into third place during its second week on screens. The weekend bumps “Love” ‘s total gross to $47.1 million.
Boasting a rap-friendly cast, “Lottery Ticket” took fourth place during its debut weekend. The comedy, which features hip-hop star Bow Wow as a young fella forced to bat away hangers-on after he lands a winning lotto ticket, rang up $11.1 million in ticket scans.
“The Other Guys” maintained a healthy presence at theaters, besting three new flicks for a top-five slot. The Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg cop comedy pulled in $10.1 million, bringing its overall haul to $88.2 million.
In a weekend packed with new movies, three debuts failed to crack the top five. “Piranha 3D” nipped at “Guys” ‘ heels with $10 million for sixth place while “Nanny McPhee Returns” and “The Switch” struggled through the weekend with $8.3 million and $8.1 million, respectively.

Cee-Lo’s New Song Is Easy On The Ears, Heavy On The Language

Motown throwback ‘F— You’ is gaining Internet buzz despite its explicit lyrics.By James Dinh

Cee-Lo Green

Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images

Four years ago, Cee-Lo scored big with his Gnarls Barkley hit song “Crazy,” but now the singer is sending a different message, one that may be a little too hard to sing in public. With his new song “F— You,” the R&B singer is keeping blogs buzzing.
On the first single from his new solo album, The Lady Killer, Cee-Lo convincingly tells off his money-hungry ex-girlfriend and the man with the larger pockets who took her away. Despite being kicked to the curb, the soul singer holds his head high and turns the tale of a scorned man into a happy-go-lucky track with his charismatic voice. The song was produced by the Smeezingtons (the writing and production trio of Bruno Mars, Philip Lawrence and Ari Levine).
“See you driving ’round town with the girl I love/ And I’m like, f— you!/ Oo, oo, ooo/ I guess the change in my pocket wasn’t enough/ I’m like, f— you!/ And f— her too!” the 36-year-old sings.
Entertainment Weekly described the track as “beyond fantastic” with its “hilarious contrast to the really, really salty language and creative lyrics,” while Pitchfork marveled at the track saying, “It’s beyond happy. Cathartic. It could be the new ‘Sesame Street’ theme. It could play at a wedding, and your grandmother would hobble to it. It’s post-censorship.”
Others, including Prefixmag.com, pondered how the track will be able to succeed with the restrictions imposed by its explicit chorus. “It’s easy to imagine the folks at Cee-Lo’s label tearing their hair out as they realize that this potential hit will hit some fairly insurmountable stumbling blocks when people are affronted by the title,” the magazine said.
With all the blogosphere praise, the singer took to Twitter to thank fans for all their early support. “Oyea, a bit of history has been made with “f— you” I’m equally amazed :) yall help put your people (me) on top where I belong! and I’ll rep till the death,” he tweeted on Sunday.
Cee-Lo will reportedly release the song’s official video next week, but until then listeners will have to settle for the song’s lyric video, which was uploaded on the singer’s official YouTube page. ‘F— You’ will be available for download October 4.

‘Avatar’ Producer Explains Sequel Process

Jon Landau says the creative team will get started even before James Cameron has a script.By Eric Ditzian

Photo: 20th Century Fox

Eight months after the record-breaking release of James Cameron’s “Avatar,” and with an expanded re-release just weeks away, the writer/director already has a massive trove of notes for a sequel. Eventually, he’ll weave together plot strands from that hodgepodge of Pandora-based brainstorming.
When that process might begin — from notes to script — is anybody’s guess, but as Cameron’s longtime producing partners, Jon Landau, told MTV News, the filmmakers aren’t going to wait for a draft before they begin to re-create the world of “Avatar.”
The creative team will begin work on creature and environment development “as soon as Jim locks in on some of those notes,” Landau explained. “We don’t have to wait for a script for that. And there are also certain things we designed from the last movie that didn’t make it in that I’m sure will make it in on the next movie.”
For now, Landau described his producer role as a two-fold job. “I’m a sounding board for those ideas [in Cameron's notes],” he said. “And I’m looking to see how we can do what we do better — researching technologies and talking to people and pressing all those frontiers.”
Filming on the first “Avatar” began in 2007, and whenever the sequel goes into production, Landau anticipates significant technological innovations when it comes to cameras and the capabilities of Weta Digital, which created the visual effects for the first flick.
“It’s not like I’m thinking, ‘OK, let’s do it again and we’ll do it exactly the same way,’ ” Landau said. “Let’s do it better. Let’s do it more cost-effectively. Let’s be training our people now and getting them involved. If you look at ‘Titanic’ to ‘Avatar,’ what happened in the visual-effects world is that everything became more cost-effective, more time-efficient and at a higher visual quality. It doesn’t mean when you look at ‘Titanic’ now, you go, ‘Oh that’s a bad movie.’ It’s the same thing now.”
Just don’t prod Landau to explain what he means by “now.” Asked what his ideal start date for a second “Avatar” would be, he said simply, “Most definitely this century.”
Check out everything we’ve got on “Avatar.”

Five Things You Need To Know About ‘Piranha 3D’

The schlocky, horror/comedy flick has more than just blood and boobs galore going for it.By Eric Ditzian

Jerry O’Connell in “Piranha 3D”

Photo: Atmosphere Entertainment

The headline of this story is a tad misleading, because there’s really only one thing you need to know about “Piranha 3D:” It’s utterly insane.

Inspired by the schlocky, love-it-or-hate-it franchise, the new movie spins a story about what happens when thousands of prehistoric fishies go tooth-to-flesh with thousands of college kids enjoying a sun-and-booze-filled spring break. It’s not spoiling anything to say that it doesn’t end well for the great majority of those slacking students. No sooner have they donned their skimpy bikinis and tapped their kegs, then the piranha strike. And strike. And strike. Blood flows, screams fly, terror reigns.
So, know that. But, of course, that’s not all there is to keep in mind about the movie, which stars Elisabeth Shue, Jerry O’Connell, Jessica Szohr, Christopher Lloyd and Richard Dreyfuss. Here are five more things you need to know about “Piranha 3D.”
There’s Equal Opportunity Nudity
Much has been made of the film’s abundant nudity. Heck, even Aja himself has been bragging about all those “3-D double-D boobs.” But the men of Piranha get their fair amount of exposure, too — if not quite the same way.
“The piranha go for the one defining feature on each of us that seems to tell everything about our character,” co-star Kelly Brook told us. “Jerry O’Connell’s character has a pretty unsightly situation with some piranhas and parts of his anatomy that will remain unspoken about on MTV.”
We’ll let you guess which part of his anatomy — O’Connell’s character makes his living in the adult-entertainment industry — gets chomped on.
It’s an Ode to the ’80s
Sure, audiences have probably never seen anything that can be called a 3-D horror/comedy popcorn flick, but listen to anyone involved with “Piranha” and you’ll hear them talk as much about the cinematic past as the technological present.
“It’s an ode to the ’80s,” Aja said.”I fell in love with the script for that reason. It’s like ‘Dead Alive’ and ‘Evil Dead.’ It’s ‘Gremlins’ for adults.”
It Could be the Bloodiest Movie Ever
The folks over at Guinness might want to take note: The “Piranha” filmmakers are convinced their movie is the bloodiest movie in cinematic history.
“Over 600 gallons of blood were used in this movie so far, and we’re not even done,” co-star Paul Scheer told us when we visited the set. “This is gonna be the most boobs and blood in any motion picture of all time.”
By the time the movie wrapped production, Aja bragged, “I think blood-wise, I have to get the final number, but we are beyond anything you can even imagine.”
The 3-D Doesn’t Suck
Who isn’t sick of unnecessary 3-D — a third dimension practically fastened on with glue and scotch tape? Here’s the thing about “Piranha 3D”: It looks pretty good. And that’s not because they shot it with 3-D cameras (the technical challenges of shooting on and in the water were simply too great to film “Avatar”-style). Aja used a painstaking post-production conversion process, and the results are worthy of applause.
” ‘Clash of the Titans’ and that last-minute conversion, forget it,” said Scheer. “['Piranha'] looks really rich and full.”
Added O’Connell, “Alex Aja, who was our boss on this one, said, ‘I’m going to make a 3-D movie and I’m going to make a really good 3-D movie. So from the get-go, all the bits, all the gags, all the drama, is designed around 3-D. So if you’re a fan of 3-D, this is one you don’t have to groan about.”
It’s Based on a True Story
What, you don’t think a swarm of prehistoric piranhas ever chewed their way through a few thousand liquored-up college kids on spring break? Scheer will set you straight.
“It’s based on a true story,” he deadpanned.
So, um, add “biopic” to this delightful hodgepodge of genres, which include horror, comedy, date movie and nasty-marine-life-vs.-people flick.
“Richard Dreyfuss didn’t even know he was shooting ‘Piranha,’ ” laughed Scheer. “He thought he was in the new ‘Jaws’ movie!”
Check out everything we’ve got on “Piranha 3D.”
