Big Surprise: Joaquin Phoenix Documentary is Fake

Ever since Joaquin Phoenix stumbled and mumbled his way through his appearance on David Letterman last year, audiences have wanted to know whether he was faking or not. And when I’m Still Here, Casey Affleck’s supposed documentary on Phoenix’s transition from acting to rap was released last week, it got people even more curious. Well, the jig is up and Casey Affleck has told the truth in an interview with the New York Times, and big surprise: the whole thing is a sham. “It’s a terrific performance, it’s the performance of his career,” he said. “The reviews were so angry,” he continued, citing reactions to the documentary, which was released theatrically by Magnolia pictures on September 10th. “I never intended to trick anybody. The idea of a quote, hoax, unquote, never entered my mind.” Affleck went on to explain he and Phoenix created the illusion that it was real because they “wanted to create a space. You believe what’s happening is real.” However, one part of the documentary is actually real: “a snippet of a home movie that showed Phoenix and his very young siblings performing, Jackson Five style, on the streets of Los Angeles.” So, what you’re really saying is that P. Diddy wasn’t really angry?

Katy and Russell Enjoy LA Time Just Ahead of His Arrest

Katy Perry and Russell Brand were out and about in LA Thursday with their coffees. They reunited on the West Coast after Russell returned from NYC, where he was busy shooting Arthur in his latest crazy costumes. Katy wore her own bold outfit to the VMAs last weekend, and Russell was there in spirit on her nails. She and Russell are looking forward to Fall and their rumored wedding, though Katy ruled the Summer with her hot jams. They were ready to take another trip together from LAX yesterday, but their takeoff was derailed - Russell was placed under a citizen’s arrest after allegedly attacking a photographer. Katy defended Russell’s actions with a sweet Tweet, writing to the paparazzo, “If you cross the line and try an put a lens up my dress, my fiancé will do his job and protect me.”

Disc Review: Connected

Ever wonder why there are so few remakes of American films by foreign filmmakers? Hollywood churns out five remakes per week, but the favor is rarely returned. Are the rights too expensive? Is it a judgment call on the quality of our homegrown films? Are they taking a moral stand against remakes in general? I don’t know the answers here people, but it’s interesting to think about nonetheless. Not coincidentally, here’s a look at a new DVD release for Benny Chan’s Connected! It’s a Hong Kong action film based on the 2004 Chris Evans/Kim Basinger thriller Cellular. That film was arguably better than its pedigree and plot would suggest, and that trend continues here. Director/co-writer Chan has made some minor changes and improvements in character and events, but the core story about a woman in need of a hero and the stranger forced into the role stays the same. The Movie: Grace Wong (Barbie Hsu) is a single (and insanely cute) mother who drops her daughter Ting off at school one morning, but is t-boned afterward on the way to work by some baddies in an SUV. They kidnap her, kill her housekeeper, and toss her in a shack in the middle of nowhere before demanding she tell them where “it” is. She has no clue what exactly “it” is so they threaten to pick up little Ting after school to help jog the woman’s memory. Grace is able to cobble together pieces of a broken phone and restore it [...]

Drake Calls T.I.’s Legal Issues An ‘Unfortunate Situation’

‘The trouble he gets into doesn’t reflect the person he is,’ Drizzy says.By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Sway Calloway

Drake

Photo: MTV News

There was one conspicuously absent person Sunday night during Drake’s performance of “Fancy” at the VMAs. Drizzy had special guests Swizz Beatz and Mary J. Blige join him onstage, but the other person who performs on the album version of he record, T.I., was not there. Tip has been dealing with matters more important than entertainment lately.

T.I. was arrested for alleged drug possession in Los Angeles at the beginning of this month, and there is a chance that his probation could be revoked.
While rehearsing for “Fancy” at the VMAs, Drake sat down and reflected on his friend’s circumstances.
“I care about Tip a lot,” Drake said. “He’s held me down since the beginning. He’s always been extremely nice to me and embraced me. Before he went to prison, to this day, I still talk about the conversation he had with me about the game and trying to stay focused.
“It hurt me the other day that somehow he found himself again in that kind of predicament. Especially with [the success of the movie] they just had out ['Takers']. It’s a personal thing. I’m not really here to say things about another man. Tip is a very smart man. I just think that, a part of me wishes he realized the power in the movement he has and what a legend he is and not get in trouble anymore. I just wish that wouldn’t happen. The man that he is, the trouble he gets into doesn’t reflect the person he is. He’s just a great individual. Yeah, it’s an unfortunate situation,” Drake continued.
What do you think about Drake’s thoughts on T.I.? Let us know in the comments.

Reel Movie Reviews: Easy A

The “A” in Easy A must stand for “amazingly,” as in “amazingly funny,” “amazingly written,” or “amazingly enjoyable.” Easy A is romantic comedy, and while the focal point is distinctly the later, it does it with a nice slice of the former. This is the story of Olive Penderghast, whose life begins to parallel that of Hester Prynn’s from The Scarlet Letter. After a little white lie gets out, she decides to use the school’s rumor mill to her full advantage. Written Bert V. Royal, directed Will Gluck, it stars Emma Stone as Olive and Amanda Bynes as Marianne. While the heart of Easy A may be inspired by the 1850 works of Nathaniel Hawthorne, the soul is that of a classic 80’s teen romantic comedy. Royal, fresh out of the gate on his first feature screenplay, has truly hit a home run. After seeing Easy A, I believe that Royal could join the likes of Cameron Crowe and John Hughes as a writer who taps into that tiny piece of our minds that is forever a teenager and gives us (especially those of us over 30) a trip down memory lane. I can’t forget Gluck, as he did a marvelous job of taking Royal’s writing and bringing it to life in such a way that it brought me back to my teens. Stone’s portrayal of Olive is well-delivered and her narration of the story via a webcam is both perceptive and hysterical at the same time. On the flipside, her BFF Rhiannon completely confused me. I just didn’t get the bipolar reactions from her. But I am a guy and I am used to being confused by women, so I let that one go. I adored Stanley Tucci and Patricia Clarkson as Emma’s parents; they are the type of parent I will aspire to be. They are loving, caring, worry for her, but do it all with amazing grace and humor. There were two small things in the movie that edged on improbable. First, would it really create such a scandal and rumors in your typical California high school when a teenage girl lost her virginity? A poll taken in 2002 showed that the average age a woman lost her virginity was at 17, and that was eight years ago. The other thing that I raised an eyebrow at was the “pop culture” references that Olive chose. I don’t want to give away more details other than to say they were awesome for me… being over 35. But I am not sure if Olive – who would have been born in 1993 – would default to references dating back years before she was even born. Those minor things aside, I absolutely loved the movie. I will easily add Easy A to my collection of comedies such as Pretty in Pink, Sixteen Candles, and Say Anything. There are a lot laugh-out-loud moments in the movie. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a fun comedy. While the movie is technically a “teen comedy,” as mentioned above, if you are no longer a teen you will still enjoy it very much. I went and saw the movie with a few friends who were on the fence about seeing it. But in the end, all of us left the theater laughing and quoting our favorite scenes or lines. Because only those who have seen the movie will understand it, (and it won’t give anything away*) I will share mine: “I got a pocket got a pocketful of sunshine and I got a love and i know that it’s all mine, oh oh.” * I want to offer an apology to the Reel Movie News fans who read my Going the Distance review before seeing the movie. I am sorry I did not have any spoiler warnings and hope you will forgive me for giving away part of the ending.

Werner Herzog Saves Joaquin Phoenix!

While it was revealed that Casey Affleck’s “documentary” on Joaquin Phoenix, I’m Still Here, is a hoax, director Werner Herzog’s interaction with the falsely wayward actor isn’t. Herzog apparently collided with Phoenix, almost literally, on the highway one day shortly after witnessing a car crash. Check out the animated video below, which takes interview footage of Herzog recounting the tale while promoting his new movie My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done, and shows what the interaction must have been like. Even if you’re pissed at Phoenix for the stunt he’s pulled, you’ll probably get a kick out of Herzog’s droll depiction of such an outrageous event. Check out the video below, and contrast it to footage of Phoenix in our I’m Still Here trailers gallery! When Herzog Rescued Phoenix

Trailer: Kevin James Gets Cheated on in ?The Dilemma?

Before he falls down comically for the MMA film he’s making, Kevin James is going to have to fall down the good old fashioned way. In The Dilemma, the film adaptation of the song “Silence is Golden,” James stars alongside Vince Vaughn, Jennifer Connelly, and Winona Rider for the story of a man who sees his best friend’s wife cheating and has to figure out what to do. Do you say something or stay silent? The trailer makes this thing look incredibly plain, or at least incredibly lacking in a story. The concept is an interesting one, but a story full of inaction might be difficult to translate. Still, there’s more than a good chance that Vince Vaughn is playing at another Breakup style role that’s a bit more heartfelt than purely comedic. That’s a good thing. The most surprising shot in the trailer is Ron Howard’s name in the credits. The trailer might be misleading, but this looks nothing like a Ron Howard movie. With a big franchise, that might be a scary prospect, but in this case, it’s another reason to be optimistic about what looks like something completely paint by numbers. What do you think? See it in hi-def at Apple.

Al Pacino, Joe Pesci May Join De Niro/Scorsese’s ‘The Irishman’

Actors are reportedly considering roles in movie about mob assassin Frank ‘The Irishman’ Sheeran.By Adam Rosenberg

Photo: Ethan Miller/ Getty Images

Robert De Niro is re-teaming with “Goodfellas” and “Casino” director Martin Scorsese for a project that is equal parts mob movie and Federico Fellini-inspired dream reality. Called “The Irishman” and based on the book “I Heard You Paint Houses,” De Niro told MTV’s Josh Horowitz in April that some plans were cooking to perhaps divide the film into two parts. There’s been no additional news on that front, but the project is inching closer to reality with today’s possible casting news.

Al Pacino and Joe Pesci are reportedly “circling” roles in “The Irishman,” according to a Deadline report. Scorsese is currently working on the 3-D film “Hugo Cabret,” which stars Chloe Moretz, Jude Law, Emily Mortimer and Ben Kingsley. “Irishman” is one of several possible projects he could move on to next.
The book “I Heard You Paint Houses” focuses on the life of mob assassin Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran, the supposed killer of Jimmy Hoffa and Joe Gallo. The movie’s script comes from Steve Zaillian, though De Niro told MTV in April that Eric Roth (“The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”) is also writing because the concept could be split over two films.
In De Niro’s words: “We have a more ambitious idea, hopefully, to make it a two-part type of film or two films. It’s an idea that came about from Eric Roth to combine these movies using the footage from ‘Paint Houses’ to do another kind of a [film that is] reminiscent of a kind of ’8 1/2,’ ‘La Dolce Vita,’ [a] certain kind of biographical, semi-biographical type of Hollywood movie — a director and the actor — based on things Marty and I have experienced and kind of overlapping them.”
“La Dolce Vita” and “8 1/2″ are works of the late, great Italian filmmaker Federico Fellini. The latter film is a semi-autobiographical work about a director who is laboring over an elaborate sci-fi production. The story is peppered with flashbacks and dreamscapes that enter into the director’s present-day reality. MTV speculated in April that a similar plan could be in the works with Roth, particularly given the long history of mob films that Scorsese and De Niro have done together.
Pacino and De Niro have teamed before, for Michael Mann’s “Heat” and Jon Avent’s “Righteous Kill.” Pesci and De Niro have worked together as well, with Scorsese, on the classics “Goodfellas,” “Casino” and “Raging Bull.” “The Irishman” would mark the first time the foursome have worked together in one movie.

Ke$ha Talks VMA Garbage Bag Ensemble, Lady Gaga’s Meat Suit

‘It was amazing. I got to wear a garbage bag on national TV,’ singer says.By Kyle Anderson, with reporting by Kara Warner

Even if they didn’t walk away with Moonmen, just about everybody who attended the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards exited the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles a winner. Taylor Swift started some buzz with new music, and Paramore’s Hayley
Williams finally got to do a live tag-team with B.o.B. Another winner in spirit? Ke$ha, whose first visit to the VMAs was a positive one.

“It was amazing. I got to wear a garbage bag on national TV,” Ke$ha gushed on the red carpet at the premiere of the second season for the HBO show “Eastbound and Down.” “It was fun. It was good. And I got nominated for four, and it was a dream come true just to be there.”
The 23-year-old singer, who did indeed wear a dress made from garbage bags, was impressed with the level of fashion experimentation at this year’s show. “It was fun. I think everybody was having fun with it,” she said. However, she is not entirely sure she would be able to take the steps that Lady Gaga did with her head-turning meat-based ensemble. “I don’t know if I could actually put raw meat on me,” she admitted.
With the VMAs behind her, Ke$ha is working on a new album, but was mostly excited to get out and support her favorite show on television. “I don’t watch TV, but this show I connect with on a really deep level,” she said. “I kind of feel like I’m the female version of Danny McBride: Kind of white trash, just ready to party.”
The Moonmen have all been handed out and the stars have gone home, but there’s plenty of 2010 MTV Video Music Awards news, interviews, behind-the-scenes scoop, party reports and more still to come, so keep it locked on MTVNews.com.

Lady Gaga Posts Anti-’Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ Video

‘I am here to be a voice for my generation,’ Gaga says before attempting to call her senators.By James Montgomery

Lady Gaga

Photo: Ian Gavan/ Getty Images

In the days since Lady Gaga appeared at the MTV Video Music Awards with four members of the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network — an organization opposed to the U.S. Armed Forces’ “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy — she has been on a mission: to speak out against what she sees as a “wrong … sick and … immoral” injustice, and to urge the U.S. Senate to vote on a measure that would repeal it.
She’s traded messages with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, castigated Arizona Senator John McCain over his attempted filibuster to block the measure and instructed her more than 6 million Twitter followers to contact their senators in support of the vote, which is scheduled to take place next week. And on Friday morning (September 17) she called her own senator during a seven-and-a-half minute video posted on her website.
In the clip, Gaga addresses several senators by name — including Republicans McCain, Kentucky’s Mitch McConnell and Oklahoma’s James Inhofe — and asks them to vote in favor of the Defense Authorization Bill, which includes language that would repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”
” ‘Don’t Ask Don’t Tell’ is a law that was created in 1993 that prevents gays from serving openly in the military. Since then 14,000 Americans have been discharged from the armed forces, refused the right to serve their country and sent home, regardless of honorable service or how valuable they were to their units,” Gaga says in the message. “[The] SLDN’s advocacy proves that these soldiers are being searched; superiors are going through their e-mails and private belongings, calling family members and operating based on assumptions. Ultimately, the law is being enforced using gay profiling. … In short, not only is the law unconstitutional, but it’s not even being properly enforced by the government.
“I am here to be a voice for my generation, not the generation of the senators who are voting, but for the youth of this country, the generation that is affected by this law and whose children will be affected,” she continued. “We are not asking you to agree with or approve the moral implications of homosexuality; we’re asking you to do your job, to protect the constitution.”
Gaga then provides her fans with information on how they can contact their senators about the Defense Authorization Bill and calls the offices of her senators, New York Democrats Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand. Unfortunately, no one picks up in Schumer’s office and Gillibrand’s voicemail is full, but Gaga will not be discouraged. And she hopes her fans won’t be, either.
“I have called both of the senators that operate in my district,” she says at the end of the video. “I will not stop calling until I reach them and I can leave them this message: ‘I am a constituent of the senator, my name is Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, also known as Lady Gaga. I’m calling to ask the senator to vote with Senators Reid and Levin to repeal ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ and oppose John McCain’s shameless filibuster. We need to do this for our gay and lesbian soldiers, and finally repeal ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.’ ”

‘True Blood’ Stars Share Their Season-Four Wish Lists

Alexander Skarsgård, Nelsan Ellis and others speculate on who’ll find supernatural powers next.By Kara Warner

“True Blood” star Alexander Skarsgard

Photo: MTV News

Oh, “True Blood,” why does your season have to end so quickly! It seems like just yesterday fans were counting down the days to the season-three premiere. Alas, the new episodes have come and gone, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have fresh news and intel straight from our favorite HBO castmembers themselves! When MTV News caught up with the merry, wise-cracking bunch recently, we asked them what might be on their wish lists for next season, as well as a few details about co-stars and witches, etc.

“Well, if you read the books you know that next season is all about fightin’ witches,” Nelsan Ellis teased about season four’s fun new plotline. “So we shall see,” he said.
But will we get to see Lafayette and Hoyt get involved in that?
Jim Parrack (Hoyt) offered to demonstrate his skills right away.
“I’ll fight a witch right now,” he said. “I’ll fight a witch tonight!”
“Maybe,” Ellis added, sounding skeptical about Parrack’s fighting ways. “And maybe Hoyt is a witch.”
“A good witch, like the white witch in ‘Wizard of Oz,’ ” Parrack added.
Todd Lowe, who plays big-hearted war vet Terry, seemed overwhelmed with all the supernatural elements that have been added to the show.
“Fighting witches? It seems fun,” he said. “I’m wondering what the next supernatural thing [is going to be] because we started with vampires, then you get shapeshifters, maenad, fairies, now werepanthers and now witches.
“We’ve got griffins that could come in and Frankensteins,” Lowe joked.
When asked whether Terry has any supernatural in him, Lowe said he hoped not. “I don’t know. I like playing a human right now,” he said. “So, no.”
Actress Lindsey Haun’s wishes for her character, Sookie’s cousin Hadley, are quite the opposite: She’s excited to explore her supernatural side.
“We haven’t really touched on her magical side,” Haun said. “She has some fun with being a witch, and she also turns into a vampire, so I’m really excited to get my own set of fangs — if that happens. I don’t know, they keep us so in the dark, I have no idea what’s going on. Nelsan, who plays Lafayette, we’re constantly like, ‘What’s next in the books? What are we doing next?’ He’s pretty good, actually, he keeps me up on what’s going to happen.”
Swedish dreamboat Alexander Skarsgård (Eric Northman) joked that he hopes he makes it back on air next season.
“We’ll see what happens in the last episode; I’m just happy if I get to come back next year,” he joked. (As if he wouldn’t.)
As for Bon Temps’ resident scaredy cat Arlene (played by Carrie Preston), the actress said she enjoys playing one of the only people on the show who is actually worried about the vamp danger factor.
“She’s a little narrow-minded. She’s sort of designed to be ridiculed because of that,” Preston said of her character’s attitude. “I take it as a challenge to make her a full, well-rounded, grounded, real, human being. The views that she expresses on the show are quite valid, which is, vampires really shouldn’t be around our children, and I think that’s a valid thing with them being cold-blooded killers.
“They make it seem like they’re so sexy and everything,” she added. “But meanwhile they have these urges sometimes that they can’t control.”
Still, scary or no, Preston said she’d like Arlene to get in on the supernatural action.
“I would like to see her get involved in some kind of the supernatural in some way. I’m just saying that’s what I would like. I’m not giving anything away. No one has said anything to me,” she insisted. “But the supernaturals seem to have a little more fun.”
Indeed they do, which is half of the reason the show is so fun for fans.
What do you want to see on next season’s “True Blood”? Which characters do you want to have some supernatural in them? Talk about it in the comments.

Reel Movie Reviews: The Town

I went to see the premiere of The Town in Fenway Park, which lent a surreal aspect to the experience, seeing as a major scene from the Ben Affleck-directed drama takes place there. I’ve also resided in Boston for years, another fact that added to the movie, as I yearned to give the film’s robbers directions through the North End during one well-executed chase sequence. The overall point being: anyone remotely familiar with this city simply must see The Town. You’d need to be slurping New England Clam Chowder and whining about the Red Sox in order to feel a closer bond to Boston than you do throughout this heist flick. But even those that have never stepped foot in Massachusetts will like Affleck’s second directorial effort. I did enjoy Gone Baby Gone more, but that says more about that movie than it does about The Town. The film’s title is short for Charlestown, a section of Boston that has produced a record number of criminals. We learn that Affleck’s Doug MacRay was a high school hockey star who seemed destined to break free from this mold, only to be drawn back in by his childhood friend, James Coughlin (Jeremy Renner, outstanding in a role opposite from his Oscar-nominated turn in The Hurt Locker). The impressive cast also includes Blake Lively (over-the-top in her accent and trashiness) as MacRay’s ex-girlfriend; Chris Cooper (in just one scene) as Doug’s imprisoned father; Rebecca Hall (great at crying!) as the woman who gives Doug hope for a new life; and Jon Hamm (under-utilized) as the FBI agent bent on bringing Doug and his bank robbing crew down. There’s a Catch Me If You Can feel to the relationship between Hamm’s Agent Frawley and Affleck’s character, minus the humor and eventual friendship. The former just really, really wants to apprehend the latter, who is an expert at covering his duplicitous tracks. Make no mistake, though, this drama belongs to Affleck and Renner. It’s mostly a story about their upbringing in a tough neighborhood and the attempt by MacRay to break free from the only life both have really known. I love Hamm as an actor, but outside of one fun scene in an interrogation room with Doug, Frawley isn’t given a lot to do. Really, anyone could have played this role. But Renner is believable as a tattooed product of the streets, someone who goes to extreme lengths at every opportunity in order to prove how tough he is. It’s clear that Doug is a level above this, but he’s no angel. As the movie progresses, fans root for Doug to leave town and to get his fresh start in Florida with Hall’s Claire Keesey, especially after we learn about events from his past (involving his mother) that shed sympathetic light on the character. Through sad eyes, Affleck sells the man’s pain and struggle well. He’s come a long way as an actor. It’s like Pearl Harbor never happened! Overall, The Town isn’t breaking any barriers. It’s not unusual to see a story about someone from the wrong side of the tracks wanting a fresh start. Heck, that was the basic premise for Good Will Hunting, the film that put Affleck on the map (I half-expected a note his character leaves near the end to say he just had to “see about a girl”). But this is a gritty drama and fulfills Affleck’s previously-stated desire to make a movie that combines action and gun play with themes such as “class in America and how children pay for the sins of their parents.” It gives you a strong sense of an area and how it can leave a lasting, dangerous impression on those who have rarely been beyond its crime-ridden streets. I wanted to feel a bit more of an emotional wallop at the end of The Town, but this is a solid character portrayal of a man stuck between the life he knows and the life he wants. It also has a few fun action sequences. It’s hard to imagine anyone leaving the theater and not feeling satisfied.

8 Films You Can?t Talk About

The release of Catfish, a movie that will cause you to be beaten to death by the internet if you even mention its name, brings to mind a few movies of the recent past that we couldn’t talk about. These films were more than just big twists. They were entire experiences that audiences, in rare form, decided were too incredible to spoil for anyone. It seems we’re getting farther and farther away from that here in the Information Age, but Catfish (whether or not the hype is deserved) is a great reminder of films that gained mystique because you “had to see them for yourself.” Here are a few of those films. Katie Holmes Makes Her Fashion Week Debut For Calvin Klein

Katie Holmes joined in the Fashion Week madness, stepping out to see the Calvin Klein runway presentation in NYC today. She smiled big as she returned to her hotel after the show, though Suri didn’t get to come along for the stylish fun like another famous 4-year-old did last weekend. Katie is on the East Coast while Tom Cruise takes care of business and his motorcycles back in LA. Perhaps that means a chance for one of the girls’ nights Katie is so fond of, or at least a stop off for cupcakes from her favorite NY spots. The final shows are today before the action moves to London starting tomorrow. There are sure to be even more sightings as things wrap up this evening, like Gwen Stefani’s L.A.M.B. show, so stay tuned for more news on style and beauty from Pop, Fab, Bella, and Fashionologie!

To see more Katie in NYC, just read more.

Kevin James To Star In Mixed Martial Arts Film

‘Paul Blart: Mall Cop’ star will play a physics teacher moonlighting as a mixed martial arts fighter.By Adam Rosenberg

Photo: David Livingston/ Getty

Mall cop Paul Blart, better known as Kevin James, is trading in his security uniform for boxing trunks. The actor is all set to go another round with Sony — after “Paul Blart: Mall Cop,” “Grown-Ups” and 2011′s “The Zookeeper” — for a mixed martial arts movie.
James will star in the as-yet-untitled feature as a physics teacher who decides to moonlight as a mixed martial arts fighter when the school he works for faces budget cuts, Deadline reports. Whatever his initial intentions are, the main character proves talented enough to land a gig as a fighter in the UFC.
Sony is reportedly fast-tracking the film to shoot next year, presumably for a 2012 release. James will also produce with Todd Garner (“Blart” and “Knight and Day”), and the script comes from Allan Loeb (“The Switch”). The actor also has a role in another Loeb-scripted comedy, early 2011 release “The Dilemma,” directed by Ron Howard and starring Vince Vaughn, Winona Ryder and Channing Tatum alongside James.
“The Zookeeper” opens next summer, starring James as the titular caretaker, an overweight, lonely guy who decides to get out into the world and meet someone. Seeing this, the animals at the zoo he so loves reveal their great secret — they can talk — and, in doing so, teach their friend how to get his groove on. Rosario Dawson stars as the live-action female lead. The film also features the voice talents of Sylvester Stallone, Adam Sandler, Judd Apatow, Cher and others.
Loeb has been busy promoting a pair of 2010 releases that he scripted, the Jason Bateman/Jennifer Aniston-starring rom-com “The Switch” (which he also produced) and the soon-to-be-released long-awaited sequel “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps.” In addition to “The Dilemma,” Loeb also worked or is working on the upcoming Sandler/Aniston comedy “Just Go With It,” actioner “Protection” and high-profile reboot/remake “Escape From New York.”

Justin Bieber Says ‘Girlfriends Are Trouble’

Pop star admits he doesn’t have much time for dating right now.By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Tim Kash

Justin Bieber at the VMAs on Sunday

Photo: Rachel Goldner/ MTV News

Now that Justin Bieber properly took over the VMAs, lined up a bunch of projects and even announced the release date for his forthcoming 3-D movie, one might think he would want to find that special someone to share his days with. But just moments after winning his Best New Artist VMA on Sunday, the 16-year-old megastar explained that he’s too busy for love right now.

“I mean, girlfriends are trouble at this age,” he explained to MTV News. “Girls are fun to hang out with but, like, having that one steady girl … we’re constantly traveling and one girl’s not gonna really [work]. You can’t really have one girl. I don’t really have any crushes at the moment.”
With so much going on in his life, the “U Smile” singer is just trying to balance his career and personal life. “Right now, the best thing is [that we're] just teenagers having fun doing what we love,” he explained. “We’re just staying ourselves and remaining humble.”
With his “Never Say Never” collaborator Jaden Smith by his side, Bieber revealed that he and the Smith family may work together again in the future, with Bieber possibly working with Will Smith on his next project. However, Bieber kept the details sparse, saying, “We’re trying to figure something out.”
In addition to trying to re-team with pal Jaden and family, Bieber said that for his next album, he wants to work with his friend and fellow Canadian Drake. “[It'll] probably [come out] fourth quarter next year,” he said. “Drake is gonna be on that album. I’m not sure [who else]. I’m gonna ask him if he can get [Lil] Wayne on there.”
The Moonmen have all been handed out and the stars have gone home, but there’s plenty of 2010 MTV Video Music Awards news, interviews, behind-the-scenes scoop, party reports and more still to come, so keep it locked on MTVNews.com.

‘Resident Evil’ Enjoys Solid ‘Afterlife’ At The Box Office

Fourth entry in video game franchise takes top prize during quiet box-office weekend.By Josh Wigler

The Box-Office Top Five
#1 “Resident Evil: Afterlife” ($27.7 million)
#2 “Takers” ($6.1 million)
#3 “The American” ($5.9 million)
#4 “Machete” ($4.2 million)
#5 “Going the Distance” ($3.8 million)
If there’s one thing that zombies enjoy more than brains, it’s money. And the flesh-eating monsters of “Resident Evil: Afterlife” got a whole lot of both as the only new wide release to hit theaters this past weekend.
Director Paul W.S. Anderson and actress Milla Jovovich’s fourth entry in the popular video game franchise proved that the series still has plenty of life in it with a first-place finish worth $27.7 million. “Afterlife” played on an estimated 4,700 screens at 3,203 locations, with just over 2,000 of those venues showing off the movie’s well-received 3-D capabilities and 141 in IMAX 3-D. Not only did “Afterlife” top the domestic box office, but it also managed to dethrone “Inception” overseas with $46.2 million earned from foreign markets.
The success of “Afterlife” all but guarantees that the “Resident Evil” franchise will soldier on. Indeed, Jovovich informed New York magazine that a fifth film will “definitely” be made, with plans to solicit story ideas from fans. “We’ve been talking to a lot of fans on Twitter and stuff, so it’s probably going to be one of the first movies where we really talk to fans to see what they want, and what characters they want to see,” she said. “It’s going to be a more interactive process.”
Beyond “Afterlife,” it was a fairly bleak weekend at the box office. “Takers” continued to perform well in its third weekend, while both “The American” and “Machete” suffered significant drops of more than 50 percent in their second weekend frames. “Going the Distance” rounded out the top five with $3.8 million.
Upcoming Releases
Next weekend, Ben Affleck invites moviegoers to visit “The Town,” while M. Night Shyamalan puts the fear of the “Devil” inside of an elevator.
Animated comedy “Alpha and Omega” and the Emma Stone-starring romantic comedy “Easy A” round out the weekend’s newcomers.

‘Resident Evil: Afterlife’ Comes Alive At Box Office

The latest film in the sci-fi franchise takes top spot at theaters Friday.By Mawuse Ziegbe

The Box-Office Top Five
#1 “Resident Evil: Afterlife” ($10.9 million)
#2 “The American” ($1.79 million)
#3 “Takers” ($1.78 million)
#4 “Machete” ($1.33 million)
#5 “Going the Distance” ($1.30 million)
The “Resident Evil” series proved it’s still filled with life at the box office. The latest installment in the undead-packed sci-fi franchise, “Resident Evil: Afterlife” pulled in $10.9 million during its first day on screens. Moviegoers checking out the return of zombie-fighter Alice (Milla Jovovich), who scours a bleak planet for survivors in the wake of a vicious virus that ravaged the globe five years earlier, placed the film at the top of the box office. Since its 2002 debut, the series has been reinvigorated with 3-D effects and, as Jovovich recently told MTV News, “In this movie, I have a lot more guns. That was fun too.”
George Clooney’s turn in “The American,” as a hitman on the run after an assignment goes south, continued to draw action fans during its second week in theaters. Although the flick opened at #1 last week, the film was far behind Friday’s box-office victor “Resident Evil,” scoring $1.79 million in ticket sales.
“Takers” continued to maintain a strong presence in theaters, running neck and neck with “The American” for third place with an estimated $1.78 million in ticket sales. Moviegoers are still heading to multiplexes to catch the slick heist flick crammed with stunts that star and producer T.I. has called “outstanding.”
“I think all of this is just a result of the hard work that was put into the project. Everybody gave 150 percent. Nobody laid back, nobody took off — everybody went hard. This is the result of that,” the rapper and actor told MTV News in August.
The Robert Rodriguez-directed “Machete” upholds the action-heavy trend among Friday’s box-office winners. Touting a diverse ensemble that includes Jessica Alba, Don Johnson and Lindsay Lohan, the flick scored $1.33 million, just squeaking ahead of sunny rom-com “Going the Distance,” which kicked off its second week in theaters in fifth place with $1.30 million.

As the movie progresses, fans root for Doug to leave town and to get his fresh start in Florida with Hall’s Claire Keesey, especially after we learn about events from his past (involving his mother) that shed sympathetic light on the character. What?s Something You Wish Was In a Movie That Wasn?t?

You?ve stumbled upon Circle of Jerks, our sporadically published, weekly feature in which we ask the questions that really matter to our writers and readers. It?s a time to take a break from our busy lives and revel in the one thing that we all share: a deep, passionate love of movies. If you have a question you?d like answered by the FSR readers and staff, send us an email at editors@filmschoolrejects.com. What’s something you wish had been included in a movie that wasn’t? This is broad, and falls under a large ‘missed-opportunities’ umbrella, but I’m studying Citizen Kane in my film class, and my professor pondered aloud at one point, “Why doesn’t Thompson visit Kane’s first wife? Well,” he continued, answering himself, “it would tell us nothing different from Leland’s flashback.” It’s a big class, and I lacked the courage to speak up, “Um, respected doctor of film? His first wife died in a car accident with his son.” This made me wonder. That little fact is barely noticeable; it’s slipped in in the “News on the March” section and never spoken of again. We never see Kane’s reaction to the disaster. – Reed A Josh Radde The thing that comes to mind most readily is No Country for Old Men, but I think the Coen’s knew exactly what they were doing. So, if we’re going to talk about missed opportunities I think the place to look is Superman Returns. That movie is basically 2 1/2 hours of blown [...]

‘Eclipse’ To Be Re-Released Friday For Bella’s Birthday

‘The Twilight Saga: Eclipse’ will hit theaters again on September 10.By Jocelyn Vena

Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson in “Eclipse”

Didn’t get a chance to see “Eclipse” in theaters the first time around? No problem! Summit Entertainment is re-releasing the movie on Friday (September 10) in honor of Bella’s birthday, which is on September 13.
“Bella Swan’s birthday is on September 13! What are you doing to celebrate?” a message on “The Twilight Saga” official Facebook page reads. “In celebration of Bella’s birthday, ECLIPSE will be re-released in theatres nationwide this Friday! It’s your last chance to see it on the big screen with your friends.”
The film, the third installment in “The Twilight Saga,” was originally released last June. It follows the love triangle between Bella, Edward and Jacob as they fend off a group of vampires, led by Victoria, who would like to see Bella out of the picture. In addition to fending off evil vamps, Bella must decide if she wants to stay human and possibly be in a relationship with werewolf Jacob or turn vampire in order to be with her true love, Edward, a choice that Jacob hopes she doesn’t make.
“The love triangle is real,” Stewart said of the power struggle back in June, just as the film was hitting theaters. “In ['Eclipse'], she is just older and a little bit more [wise]. Now you really believe her. It took a while for her to know herself well enough to make a decision.”
After the “Twilight” actors wrap up other projects they are working on, they will head back to the set to film the last two movies in the series, “Breaking Dawn” parts one and two, expected for release in 2011 and 2012 respectively. “Dreamgirls” director Bill Condon will helm the final film adaptations of Stephenie Meyer’s best-selling books.
Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.”

Director tried to use much-maligned post-production 3-D subtly.By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

As movie studios and filmmakers rushed to capitalize on the 3-D wave, there have been plenty of successes (“Avatar,” “Toy Story 3,” “How to Train Your Dragon”) and a few flops — particularly when the post-production conversion is applied (“Clash of the Titans,” “The Last Airbender”).

When MTV News caught up with “The Last Airbender” director M. Night Shyamalan to discuss his involvement in this week’s “Devil,” we asked for his thoughts on the controversy surrounding the new practice of post-production 3-D.
“I knew as soon as we were deciding to do the conversion that we were going to get that [criticism] because it has a stigma to it,” Shyamalan said of the flak critics and fans heaped on “Airbender.”
“I definitely do everything very minimal — the sound, the movement of the camera — and when I was doing the 3-D, I decided to do it really gently and just enhance the shot,” he explained. “If we went shot-for-shot and I showed it to you, it was just enhanced. ‘Wow, I can see the depth. Wow, it does feel more grand. Wow, it does feel more beautiful. I’m more into it.’ ”
Shyamalan said his goal was to use 3-D subtly, but the format is perhaps too new to be used in that manner, versus the in-your-face, arm-reaching-into-the-audience 3-D of years past.
“That’s not my aesthetic,” he said.
The director said he loved the film’s 3-D team, which was very protective of the film and staying true to the artistry of it.
“We would talk through the philosophy of each shot a little bit,” he said.
Shyamalan said the conversion process was a complete learning experience for him.
“I enjoyed learning about it a great deal,” he said. “This whole movie was about me learning things I didn’t know, and I’m glad I learned about it.”

30 Seconds To Mars Say ‘Hurricane’ Video Will Be ‘Sexual’

Band will release clip after live film ‘This Is War’ is completed.By James Montgomery

30 Seconds to Mars at the 2010 VMAs

Photo: Frederick M. Brown/ Getty Images

Roughly an hour before 30 Seconds To Mars strode onto the VMA stage to humbly accept their award for Best Rock Video, they walked the white carpet outside the Nokia Theatre, where they were just as humble, if not slightly agog by everything happening around them.
“We’re feeling good, kind of amazed,” 30STM frontman Jared Leto told MTV News. “Really, this is all a surprise to us. We’re just happy that people are responding to the work; this whole thing has been fun and crazy and chaotic.”

While they were wide-eyed by all the VMA action — and an ill-advised “glitter bomb” that took place at the top of the carpet — they were ready to discuss business … namely, how they would follow the VMA-winning video for “Kings And Queens” and the jaw-dropping live clip for “Closer to the Edge.”
From the sound of things, they’ve got a pretty good plan.
“The next thing you will see is the completion of [the live film] ‘This Is War’ finally,” Leto said. “And a new video for a song — this is a scoop — for a song called ‘Hurricane.’ [The video] is very, very, very, very sexual.”
We imagine members of 30STM’s Echelon will be very excited to see both of those things, and we suspect fans of Leto will get behind anything involving him and the word “sexual.” There’s no word on just when the band plans on filming the video for “Hurricane,”
which at one point featured a cameo by Kanye West, but we’ll definitely keep you posted.
Are you excited for 30 Seconds To Mars’ new video? Let us know in the comments!

Lady Gaga’s ‘Bad Romance’ Director Recalls Video’s ‘Explosion’

Francis Lawrence-directed clip took home Video of the Year at VMAs.By Adam Rosenberg

As the top-nominated artist at Sunday night’s 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, pop sensation Lady Gaga’s “little monsters” were tuned in to witness her triumphs — and they weren’t disappointed. Gaga took home eight Moonmen, including the evening’s top prize for Video of the Year.
Director Francis Lawrence was also honored for his work on “Bad Romance,” though even with work for artists like Britney Spears, Will Smith and Aerosmith behind him, he admitted that nothing he’s done compares with the fervor generated by the night’s top-winning video.
“I’ve been doing it a long time, but I’ve never really experienced an explosion with a video like this, where people so eagerly awaited it and it blew up on YouTube instantly,” he explained. “For a while, until the Justin Bieber video came out, it was the most-viewed video on YouTube.”
Lawrence admitted that he would love to work with Gaga again, though his increased focus in recent years on Hollywood features, such as “I Am Legend” or the upcoming Robert Pattinson/ Reese Witherspoon-starring adaptation “Water for Elephants” leaves his schedule pretty packed. “I haven’t [heard from her], because I pretty much became unavailable right after [the 'Bad Romance'] shoot,” he said. “But if she had a new song and wanted to do something, I would do it in a second. She was really fun to work with.”
Lawrence’s interest in working with Gaga again can largely be credited to the pop star’s own passion for a well-made music video, a fact that is evident in all of her work. “She loves the art form of music videos and she is a real creative partner and has great ideas and really cool and unique tastes. She has a great team working with her as well, helping build really fantastic things that she wears,” he explained. “She works hard, she shows up on time and she’s pretty spontaneous… it was great.”
“Bad Romance” is an excellent example of this. Lawrence and Gaga each had their own ideas for how the video ought to look. They met, discussed it and collaborated to produce a shared vision, one that incorporated ideas from both sides. Even when the plan changed, there was still a clear idea of what to do and how to do it.
“Originally I was gonna shoot ['Bad Romance'] in New York and we were gonna shoot it on location. There were more exteriors and things like that,” Lawrence said. “And then because of budgetary restraints and because of her schedule, we moved it to Los Angeles and the setting changed and it all just became that one interior space, but the basic idea and the concept of the video stayed pretty much the same.”
On those “budgetary restraints,” Lawrence freely admits that times have changed. “Years ago, when I was really making [music videos], before I was making movies, budgets would be over a million dollars,” he said. “Bad Romance” featured no product placement, but he said the reason we see such things in music videos these days is that it allows for bigger budgets — which makes the Gaga video all the more impressive. “It was a two-day shoot,” he said. “We spent two 14-hour days shooting.”

Justin Long Shares His ‘Die Hard 5′ Ideas

‘It’s going to be Gabourey Sidibe and Bruce teaming up, finally,’ he jokes.By Kara Warner

Justin Long

Photo: Jason Merritt/Getty Images

The last time we heard any news on “Die Hard 5,” Bruce Willis assured us that an official green-light for the film was “imminent.” Given that small but hopeful tidbit, when we caught up with Willis’ “Live Free or Die Hard” co-star Justin Long recently, we had to ask whether the “Going the Distance” star had yet been approached to reprise his role in the fifth film.

“I had a meeting recently at Fox about doing a romantic [comedy],” Long recalled. “And the guy in the office next door, he was in charge of the new ‘Die Hard,’ [so] I said, ‘Do you mind if I pop my head in?’ So I met him and I was like, ‘Ummm?’ ” the actor explained, gesturing with his hands in a motion that suggested “What about me?”
“He was equally vague in his gesture back to me,” Long said. “So I didn’t get a good feeling that I was going to be a part of the imminent ‘Die Hard.’ I don’t know if I’m going to get my hands on it.” He added, “I would love to.”
Whether the film happens with or without Long is still up for debate. Regardless, Long offered up some unique ideas regarding a possible story line for the fifth film.
“For a while, there was talk of, they were going to combine ‘Die Hard’ with ’24,’ ” Long said. “It was going to be Kiefer Sutherland’s character in it [to which we responded with a very suspicious, raised brow]. I’m not kidding!” Long insisted. “I think there was a script that had been imminent,” he said seriously — and then veered off course completely. “Now it’s going to be ‘Die Preciously Hard,’ so it’s going to be Gabourey Sidibe and Bruce teaming up, finally,” Long joked.
Perfect. Bruce Willis and Gabourey Sidibe in a “Die Hard” movie … it’s about time!
“That’s what the fans are saying, it’s about time! It’s ‘Die Hard Based on the Novel “Push” by Sapphire.’ ”

Pop star has been on location in Hawaii shooting with co-stars including ‘really cool’ Alexander Skarsgård.By Kara Warner, with reporting by Jim Cantiello

To paraphrase an esteemed character from “Zoolander,” that Rihanna is so hot right now!

Not only does the singer have one of the biggest songs of the year in Eminem’s “Love the Way You Lie,” but her new single, “Only Girl,” is getting serious buzz. After jetting in from Hawaii, she gave a killer surprise performance alongside Em at this year’s VMAs. When we caught up with the multi-talented star, we asked about the awards show and her upcoming film, “Battleship.”
Although filming has already started on the 2012 flick, Rihanna told MTV News she just had to make the trip to Los Angeles on Sunday.
“It really killed me that I couldn’t be here and, luckily, I got the day off. Eminem, he called me the day before and said, ‘Please, I’m having a really hard time doing this without you,’ ” she recalled. “We had a really great song, and I just was like, ‘Oh damn!’ It killed me. And then they allowed us to leave and do it, and we jetted in and we’re gonna jet right back out,” she laughed.
Regarding her role in “Battleship,” which is based on the beloved Hasbro board game, Rihanna said she’s having a great time so far. “It’s really good, really good,” she said. “I’m really enjoying it, actually. I like it.”
The movie also stars “Friday Night Lights” breakout star Taylor Kitsch, model Brooklyn Decker and “True Blood” heartthrob Alexander Skarsgård.
The pop star spoke highly of her hunky co-star, Skarsgård.
“He’s really cool, just laid-back. He doesn’t get in the way,” Rihanna said. “[He's] not very talkative, but he’s a really cool guy and that’s [to] everybody — not just the cast.”
Oh … and there’s that tall and Swedish thing he has going for him as well.
“He’s super-tall,” she smiled. “I didn’t even know he was that tall!”

‘Machete’ Slices Competition At Friday Box Office

‘The American’ is hot on the heels of the action flick.By Mawuse Ziegbe

The Box-Office Top Five
#1 “Machete” ($3.9 million)
#2 “The American” ($3.8 million)
#3 “Takers” ($3 million)
#4 “The Last Exorcism” ($2.3 million)
#5 “Going the Distance” ($2.2 million)
“Machete” was a cut above the competition in a close Friday box-office race crowded with new releases. According toreports, the sexed-up, action-packed Robert Rodriguez-directed film took first place with $3.9 million on Friday.
However, the star-heavy caper, which boasts performances from Jessica Alba and Danny Trejo, and a buzzed-about screen turn from Lindsay Lohan, just barely slipped past The American.” The George Clooney thriller, which revolves around an assassin who lands in Italy for a final job, kicked off the weekend with $3.8 million. Friday’s haul bumps the film’s cumulative take to $7 million since the movie landed in theaters on Wednesday.
Rounding out an action-heavy top three, “Takers” pulled in $3 million during its second Friday in theaters. Although the film opened at #1 last weekend, it appears news of the film’s star T.I.’s arrest hasn’t completely doused the fire of the heist flick. The film also boasts appearances from Idris Elba and singer Chris Brown, who has recently triumphed on the music charts with his single “Deuces.” The movie has made an estimated $29.5 million since landing in theaters.
The horror movie “The Last Exorcism,” which nabbed the second-place slot in a photo-finish box-office race against “Takers” last week, slipped to the #4 spot. The creep-fest raked in $2.3 million during its second Friday on screens, which nudged its total gross to $27 million.
The rom-com “Going the Distance,” starring Drew Barrymore and real-life on-and-off beau Justin Long, debuted in fifth place. The movie, which follows a young couple working to sustain the spark in their long-distance relationship, scored $2.2 million in ticket sales.

Boiling Point: Let Me Skip It & Quit It

I’m a fan of home video. The power to watch movies from the comfort of my own couch is brilliant. When DVD came out, I was all over it. Once Blu-ray players stopped requiring you to sacrifice your first born (who I had already promised to Satan in exchange for a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II Soundtrack Cassette tape), I was all about that too. Still am. Perfect HD picture and perfect HD sound in my own home, sweet. All without the hassle of standing in line at the theater, stepping in sticky substances, and suffering through twenty minutes of commercials before the show starts. Wait. Scratch that last one. Some Blu-rays (and DVDs) insist on trying to force trailers, warnings, and advertisements in your face. In the comfort of your own home, remote in hand, you smash the Menu button, jam the Skip button down a thousand times, only to be greeted with a crappy trailer and the text “That operation is not valid here.” Suck it, studio, that’s some bull. I understand why studios might want to lock us into these advertisements and trailers: they want us to buy more of their products, watch more of their movies. Get it. Got it. Fuck it. Why can’t I skip it? I mean, odds are pretty good I’ve already seen your movie. I’ve definitely already paid for your disc. Why am I subject to these rules? All this really does is serve to annoy the viewer. We’re not going to watch your trailers and [...]

Adam Brody Says His Kristen Stewart Comments Were ‘Ungentlemanly’

‘I sounded like a jackass,’ ‘The Romantics’ actor says of telling KStew to ‘quit’ the acting business.By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Adam Brody

Photo: MTV News

It was the comment that launched a thousand hate e-mails and lit up “Twilight” message boards across the World Wide Webs. Previously adored, charming guy-next-door actor Adam Brody backhandedly told Kristen Stewart to “quit” acting if being famous bothered her so much.

The firestorm was sparked by an interview Brody gave on Diablo Cody’s online chat show, “Red Band Trailer.” When Cody asked Brody whether he enjoyed his celebrity or if he would prefer to be known as just “an actor,” referencing Stewart’s comments about wanting to be left alone, his response was a bit testy.
“It’s only gotten worse, I’m sure, being a celebrity,” Brody, who is in the “Scream 4″ cast, said. “At the same time, I don’t have a lot of patience for people who moan about it too much. Because there are many things you could do. … It’s like, quit … you don’t need to be an actor, so it’s like, if it’s that much of a problem … there’s the door.”
And with that, the hate-on-Adam-Brody campaign began. When MTV News caught up with the man in question to talk about his upcoming ensemble flick “The Romantics,” we asked him whether his response might have been taken out of context.
“I, no, I just, I, this is horrible,” he started, seemingly uncomfortable addressing the hot-button issue. “It wasn’t taken out of context. I saw [the episode] and thought I sounded like an idiot. I did,” Brody admitted. “Regardless of how anyone else took anything, I would think that sounds very ungentlemanly and I sounded like a jackass.”
A Hollywood actor who publicly acknowledges a gaffe? Well done, Mr. Brody. Points to the former “O.C.” star for his honesty!

B.o.B, Hayley Williams Perform Rousing ‘Airplanes’ At VMAs

Bruno Mars also joins pair onstage for a medley of ‘Nothin’ on You,’ ‘Airplanes’ and Paramore’s ‘Only Exception.’By James Dinh

Hayley Williams and B.o.B perform during the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards

They may have met for the first time on Saturday, but B.o.B and Paramore frontwoman Hayley Williams had real chemistry when they performed their hit “Airplanes” at Sunday’s Video Music Awards.

Joined by Bruno Mars, B.o.B and Williams performed a medley that also included “Nothin’ on You” and Paramore’s “Only Exception” at the 2010.
Beginning with this spring’s anthem “Nothin’ on You,” Mars crooned his way through the track’s chorus until an energetic B.o.B appeared on the other side of the Nokia Theatre stage. “Give it up to my homie, B.o.B,” Mars screamed.
After bringing the song to a pause, B.o.B transitioned into his other 2010 smash, “Airplanes.” Decked out in a white ensemble, Williams walked through a misty entrance as she met the MC at center stage.
“Can we pretend that airplanes/ In the night sky, are like shooting stars?/ I could really use a wish right now/ Wish right now, wish right now,” she belted.
The duo sang smiling and dancing slightly side by side, as a lightning backdrop flickered in the background. With the song coming to an end, Williams walked to the back of the stage as “Only Exception” began to play. Joined by her band, the frontwoman grabbed a mic. As she sang the track, a sea of golden light bulbs were suspended above their heads.
During rehearsals for the big performance on Saturday, MTV News asked B.o.B what fans could expect from his and Hayley’s VMA set. “I think just the fact that me and her are performing on the stage at the same [event] is gonna be spectacular,” he told us.
B.o.B and Williams were nominated for Best Collaboration Video for “Airplanes,” but lost out to Lady Gaga’s “Telephone,” featuring Beyoncé.
What did you think of B.o.B and Hayley’s first-ever joint performance? Tell us in the comments!

‘Waiting For Superman’ Director Hopes Film Will Help U.S. Schools

‘We’re failing too many kids,’ Davis Guggenheim tells MTV News.By Kara Warner

“Waiting for Superman”

Photo: Paramount Pictures

“Waiting For Superman,” like “Catfish,” is a documentary that came out of this year’s Sundance Film Festival with major buzz. But the two films couldn’t be more different. Directed by Davis Guggenheim (“An Inconvenient Truth”), “Superman” sheds a glaring and startling light on the crippling flaws of America’s school system.
MTV caught up with the award-winning director while he was in the midst of a promotional blitz that has included appearances and screenings at schools across the country — one of which MTV was proud to host in conjunction with our Get Schooled campaign. Despite a hectic schedule (which explains why he didn’t have the time to do that Justin Bieber concert movie), Guggenheim sat down with us to talk education reform, the reasons why MTV viewers should care about their neighborhood schools and what the average person can do to sustain the conversation he hopes to start with his film.

MTV: Why tackle this subject now?
Davis Guggenheim: Well, I’m a parent and I have three kids. I worry about what education they’re going to get. … Everyone knows the world has changed, but our schools haven’t changed. They’re not built to prepare our kids for this new economy. Right now, if you don’t graduate high school and don’t go to a four-year college, your chances are really limited. We’re failing too many kids. Kids who watch MTV should be really worried about whether they’re getting the right education and whether their friends and siblings are getting a good education, so they can have a good life and a piece of the American dream.
MTV: With a film like this, people feel outrage, depression, etc. What is the message or emotion you want people to take away from it?
Davis Guggenheim: There are two feelings when you see this movie. The movie climaxes in a scene where the kids I follow end up at a lottery and you realize that their future is going to be determined by how a bingo ball bounces, literally. They are there holding a card with a number, but instead of winning a lot of money, you win a chance to have a future in America, and it’s heartbreaking and it’s really un-American. You say, “Wait a minute. This is not our country; we shouldn’t have to play bingo to get a good education.” That’s the harsh realization, but the other emotion that comes out of the movie is a sense of hope. In the last 10 years, there is a new generation of reformers who are doing an amazing job, in every city across the country. They’re starting to break the code on how you can educate kids, even in the toughest neighborhoods. So there’s a lot of hope if we focus on these reforms and smart reforms, and put away all the adult problems, we can actually start helping kids.
MTV: Is there a call to action at the end?
Davis Guggenheim: Yeah, there really is. The call to action is, “The stakes are even higher than we thought; it affects all of us. But we can do it and it takes people stepping up, being outraged, and demanding that our schools are great for every kid.”
MTV: What is the first thing the average American who sees the film and wants to do something can do?
Davis Guggenheim: The first step is to be informed. What I find is that a lot of people think they know what’s going on but really don’t. With No Child Left Behind, you can actually go on and learn the scores of your school. But I think that the best way is to go see this movie. Like “An Inconvenient Truth,” it became this primer, this experience people had and they shared with each other and became empowered to fight for change. When that happens, anything is possible. Some people might go in and tutor a kid, another might want to become a teacher, other people might want to reform their school district. That’s what a film does — it creates a conversation and inspires people to incite change.
MTV: What has the response been like so far?
Davis Guggenheim: Even moreso than “An Inconvenient Truth,” and I never thought I’d have an experience that would surpass “An Inconvenient Truth.” But even more than [that film], there has been this rallying around the movie. Paramount, a major movie studio, decides to release it. At Sundance there were standing ovations, tears, people are coming up to me and saying “I want to help this one kid, I want to pay for their private school,” “I want to reform my district.” It’s very exciting to see a movie like this have this effect on people.
MTV: Moving forward, aside from having made the film and getting the word out, what is next?
Davis Guggenheim: Well I’m trying to raise three good kids and make sure, even with a private school, that they have a great education. But it’s not enough to make the movie, I’m on a campaign to fix our schools. … Next month I’m in a different city every day getting people to join our conversation on how to fix our schools.
MTV: Well, now it’s understandable why you were a little too busy to tackle the Justin Bieber concert movie.
Davis Guggenheim: [He laughs.] I think they found someone more talented than me. [But] my daughters love him and my 4-year-old still thinks she’s going to marry him. … It’s so cute. I like his music.
MTV: So it was just a matter of too-busy schedules and timing?
Davis Guggenheim: Scheduling, timing and I needed to serve this movie first. I have to spend the next six months on this.

30 Seconds To Mars, Ke$ha Plan Big VMA Arrivals

Can this year’s nominees rival the elephants and yachts of years past?By James Montgomery

30 Seconds to Mars

Photo: Myriam Santos/ Kayda

For much of the past decade, the MTV Video Music Awards has really been two shows: The one where they hand out the Moonmen, and the one that occurs on the red carpet, where the stars try their very best to outdo each other with over-the-top arrivals.
From yachts to 18-wheel trucks, elephants to horse-drawn carriages, how you arrive at the VMAs has become just as important as whether you take home an award. As you can probably imagine, sometimes, things get a little crazy.
“Usually, artists don’t let us know [how they're arriving] until the last minute, which makes things interesting,” Video Music Awards Pre-Show executive producer Ryan Kroft told MTV News. “A lot of times, they’ll want to do things like land a hot-air balloon on the carpet, or drive a car down the carpet, but generally, the fire marshal frowns on those kinds of things, so we have to tell them ‘no.’ ”
Still, there are plenty of ideas that do get the green light, and they’re just as epic as the stars that thought them up. And this year’s VMA arrivals are no different, though for aesthetic reasons, they’re slightly scaled back.
“In New York, we had stars arriving on a fire truck, a double-decker bus, but that wouldn’t play this year,” Kroft said. “The carpet is designed to look like the stars are arriving at a Hollywood Hills mansion — white, chrome, glass — so having someone arrive with a marching band would seem somewhat out of place.”
But there are big arrivals nonetheless: One of the biggest involves 30 Seconds to Mars, who have already started touting their entrance as being thoroughly crazy.
“30 Seconds to Mars are recreating a scene from their ‘Kings and Queens’ video,” Kroft explained. “They’ll have an army of bicyclists arriving with them, and they’ll be riding bikes themselves. Most of the bicyclists are from the video.”
Going equally big is Ke$ha, who has a few surprises ready for the VMA carpet. We don’t want to give it all away, but here’s what we can reveal: “Ke$ha has big plans for the carpet. I can’t talk about all of them, but she is arriving in a Delorean, which she got herself,” Kroft said. “It’ll be like ‘Back to the Future.’ ”
And, in keeping with grand tradition, there are still plenty of stars who haven’t said how they’re going to be arriving — Jay Sean is planning something “big and sexy,” Soulja Boy Tell’em has some swaggadocious plans in the works, and Bruno Mars is still plotting, too — and then, there’s Lady Gaga, who … well, you never know what she’ll do.
“We still don’t know what some people are doing,” Kroft laughed. “The only way you’ll know is to tune in to the VMA Pre-Show and watch.”
The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. The party starts with MTV News’ VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for Best New Artist from now through Sunday.

Review: Nikita ? Pilot

Nikita is the newest adaptation of the now infamous 1990 French action film (La Femme Nikita) directed by Luc Besson. From producer McG and star Maggie Q as the title character Nikita, the show follows a woman who has begun a vendetta against her former government employer, Division. And she’ll stop at nothing to take them down for good. And Division will also stop at nothing to see Nikita dead and buried six feet under.  At the same time, Division has brought on a brand new recruit. But there’s much more to the newbie than any of them initially realized. And so begins the brand new series, Nikita What worked: This is a damn good show, and has the makings of another home run for the junior network. Similar to the success we have seen from Smallville and Supernatural. Perhaps what’s most shocking to me about the series, is the rather complex story telling method being utilized. Normally, a show like this would use flashbacks to tell the back story of the main character. Instead, we will be learning Nikita’s back story through Division’s newest recruit. This leaves plenty of episode run time for Nikita to exist in present time. I think it’s a bold move, and something refreshing in the world of television. Speaking of that new recruit, in some ways she’s more compelling than Nikita herself. Besides being ultra hot, she’s a damn good fighter, and manipulator. I’m really looking forward to see where the character of Alex [...]

?American Psycho? Director Stays True to Girl-on-Girl Vampires for ?Moth Diaries?

Mary Harron must be obsessed with refined murderers. She famously gave the world an adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’s business-card obsessed killer in American Psycho, and now she’s headed to boarding school to create The Moth Diaries – an adaptation of the Rachel Klein novel of the same name. It looks like she’s got a cast on board as well – Lily Cole, Scott Speedman, Sarah Gadon and Sarah Bolger have all signed on. As to tone, Harron notes “This is a chillingly atmospheric horror story with real emotional depth. I?ve tried to stay true to Rachel Klein?s novel in the way it re-works and updates the Gothic tradition and the whole notion of girl-on-girl vampires.” The book focuses on a young girl (played by Bolger) who grows increasingly obsessed with her friend Lucy and a growing relationship between her and the mysterious Ernessa. Described with pale skin and piercing eyes, that’s the role for Cole. Lucy will be played by Gadon, and Speedman will play the professor that Bolger’s character develops feelings for. It probably won’t be a major feat to get a brooding performance from Speedman, and the female cast is incredibly strong. Bolger is best known as Mary Tudor on The Tudors, but she also had a great role in Jim Sheridan’s In America. Cole caught a break with St. Trinian’s and went on to become the un-distressed damsel in The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus. Gadon is the only x-factor here, with a minor role in the [...]

M. Night Shyamalan Says ‘Last Airbender’ Was ‘Enhanced’ By 3-D

Indie Spotlight: Sequestro

You’re sitting in your living room when the call comes. It’s a crackle, then a bright tone, then a recorded voice asking if you’ll accept the charges. You agree, and instantly the other end explodes with an angry rasp yelling at you about money and your loved one’s life. If you don’t follow through with the amount they want, they’ll cut off another body part. This is the startling opening to Sequestro, a documentary getting its hands dirty in the big business of disappearances in Brazil. Following the special police force assigned to the epidemic and delivering the heart-shaking details of the families dealing with a father, a mother, a brother, a sister who is in the hands of kidnappers, the film is an insightful look at something nightmarish that exists in everyday life in South America. Director Jorge Wolney Atalla has two tones flowing smoothly through his third film. One comes naturally, and the other comes from the social expectations of the viewer. The imagery on screen is treated with the utmost objective care, with the dry nature that any documentary subject demands. The compelling nature of forced extortion and the great fear induced by it stands on its own, so while the film feels clinical, it also feels horrifying. Letting the subject matter speak for itself shows the restraint Atalla and company displayed in order to bring a calm voice to a sensitive topic. In doing so, the film follows a few key figures: a family whose father [...]

Film Festival Buzz: Natalie Portman, James Franco, Joaquin Phoenix And More

New movies from Ben Affleck, Casey Affleck, Danny Boyle and others are drawing attention at this year’s Telluride and Venice film festivals.By Eric Ditzian

Around this time last year, George Clooney’s “Up in the Air” opened at the Telluride Film Festival and rode that initial buzz to six Academy Award nominations. A year later, another crop of high-profile films have premiered at Telluride and the Venice Film Festival, including new work from Danny Boyle (director of 2009′s Oscar winner “Slumdog Millionaire”), Darren Aronofsky (“The Wrestler”) and Ben Affleck (“Gone Baby Gone”).

Which films will we be feting in the weeks and months to come? Here’s a look at the most buzzed-about movies from both fests.
“Black Swan”
Just days before Aronofsky jetted off to Venice to present his follow-up to “The Wrestler,” the director confessed to MTV News that he gets very nervous before one of his film’s premieres. “When ‘The Wrestler’ showed at Venice the last time, I walked out in the middle,” he said. “I couldn’t handle it. I snuck back in the end. It was not a pleasant experience.”
Aronofsky may have been nervous, but “Black Swan” was indeed well-received, with rapturous praise reserved for star Natalie Portman that immediately makes her a Best Actress Oscar front-runner. Pete Hammond of Deadline Hollywood dubbed her turn a “dazzling tour de force.”
The film follows Portman as a ballerina ready to take over the lead role in her company’s production of “Swan Lake,” until a rival dancer (Mila Kunis) shows up and begins to drive Portman toward madness. ” ‘Black Swan’ is a brilliant mind f—,” wrote Peter Sciretta of SlashFilm. “It is one of the boldest films I’ve seen produced by a Hollywood studio in years.”
“127 Hours”
Danny Boyle debuted “Slumdog” at Telluride in 2008, a decision that came to be seen as a wise one, and the critical darling went on to sweep the Oscars months later. Boyle’s back now with a true story about a hiker (James Franco) who becomes trapped under a boulder in the wilderness and must saw off his own arm to escape. Like Portman, Franco is being discussed as a potential Oscar nominee.
“[Franco] pulls off a virtual one-man show,” said Stephen Farber of The Hollywood Reporter. “The actor already has demonstrated tremendous versatility, and just this year, viewers have seen him as one of Julia Roberts’ lovers in ‘Eat Pray Love’ and as Beat poet Allen Ginsberg in ‘Howl.’ Here he manages to create a radically different character — an extroverted adventurer who is forced to turn reflective. Expect Oscar to come calling next year.”
“The Town”
Ben Affleck’s heist drama does not premiere until Wednesday (September 8), but anticipation is high based on the director’s past work and the new film’s impressive ensemble, including Jon Hamm, Blake Lively, Jeremy Renner, Rebecca Hall and Chris Cooper.
“It’s hard to disavow a movie when you’ve written, directed and acted in it,” Affleck told The New York Times. “This is an emblem of the person I want to be going forward.”
“The King’s Speech”
British director Tom Hooper might not be well- known on American shores, but his new film just might be the buzziest one to debut at Telluride or Venice. Colin Firth stars as member of the British royal family who overcomes numerous obstacles to become King George VI. He’s joined by Helena Bonham Carter, Geoffrey Rush and Guy Pearce, among others.
“After several additional screenings and a rare standing ovation Sunday night as part of a companion tribute to Firth … the film has provoked talk of widespread awards recognition,” said The Hollywood Reporter. “While other films also attracted partisans, ‘The King’s Speech’ was seen as having the broadest support across a broad array of awards categories.”
“I’m Still Here”
The questions began early in 2009: Just what the heck was going on with Joaquin Phoenix, with that bushy beard and the unhinged public appearances? Phoenix and Casey Affleck filmed the entire unraveling, and now audiences are starting to decide for themselves: documentary or mockumentary? Trouble is, not everyone is convinced they’ve come to the right conclusion.
” ‘I’m Still Here’ finally addresses the question of whether Joaquin Phoenix’s decision to give up acting to pursue a hip-hop career was on the level or a setup. The answer seems to be: a bit of both,” reports Variety.
Affleck, of course, is not exactly setting the record straight, which only amps up anticipation for the film. “Elliptically, I would say … I sincerely don’t want to influence people’s interpretation,” Affleck told reporters in Venice, according to The Associated Press. “I can tell you there is no hoax. It makes me think of ‘Candid Camera’ or something.”
From the saucy Jessica Alba in “Little Fockers” to James Franco’s grueling journey in “127 Hours,” the MTV Movies team is delving into the hottest flicks of fall 2010. Check back daily for exclusive clips, photos and interviews with the films’ biggest stars.

‘The American’ Wins Labor Day Box Office

The George Clooney thriller breaks away from the pack on the holiday weekend.By Mawuse Ziegbe

The Box-Office Top Five
#1 “The American” ($12.9 million)
#2 “Takers” ($11.4 million)
#3″Machete” ($11.3 million)
#4 “The Last Exorcism” ($7.5 million)
#5 “Going the Distance” ($6.9 million)
“The American” staged a last-minute takeover of the weekend box office after sliding into second place on Friday. According to The Hollywood Reporter, George Clooney’s turn as a hitman dodging danger in Italy to carry out one last mission, raked in an estimated $12.9 million, besting “Machete” at the close of its first weekend in theaters.
After landing in third place on the Friday kickoff of Labor Day weekend, last week’s #1 movie, “Takers” also toppled Robert Rodriguez’s graphic Mexploitation pic. Featuring hip-hop and Hollywood names like Chris Brown, Hayden Christensen and T.I., the action flick about a smash-and-grab job by suave crew of thieves, snatched up $11.4 million in ticket sales for second place.
After barely edging past “The American” on Friday, “Machete” will wrap up its debut weekend right behind “Takers” with a third-place finish. Featuring Jessica Alba and Danny Trejo, and boasting a much-hyped appearance from Lindsay Lohan, the film pulled in $11.3 million.
“The Last Exorcism” held steady in the top five with $7.5 million. The fourth-place picture, which follows a film crew charged with documenting the creepy developments at a rural exorcism, has made a total of $32.3 million since hitting theaters last week.
Drew Barrymore and Justin Long’s date-night pic, “Going the Distance,” lagged behind stronger debuts like “The American” and “Machete.” The rom-com, featuring the two real-life, off-and-on lovers playing a couple working to keep a long-distance romance afloat, rang up $6.9 million in ticket sales to land in fifth place during its opening weekend.

In Regards To Your Movie, ?Resident Evil: Afterlife?

Sometimes a movie is so special that it cannot be contained by the standard review. When that happens, we’re more than happy to write an open letter to the production in the hopes of making everyone’s day a little brighter. In the case of Resident Evil: Afterlife, it’s about as special a movie as I’ve seen in a while. To Whom it May Concern: As per my mother’s teachings, I’d like to open up this message with the good. A spoonful of sugar will help the whole mess go down. First of all, and you won’t catch me saying this very often, the 3D looked fantastic. There were some hiccups (more on that later), but overall you created some interesting shots and some that were truly breathtaking. Also, you saw fit to cast Boris Kodjoe as the former basketball star Luther West. Without him, there would have been zero interesting actors to listen to – so thank you sincerely for that minor reprieve. As for the bad, there was a lot of it, so let’s avoid recreating your movie’s pace and attempt not to get too bogged down. Correct me if I get this wrong: in the continuing story of the Umbrella Corporation and the Tyrant Virus turning everyone into monsters, Alice (Milla Jovovich) survives an assault on their Japanese facility only to head for a safe haven in Alaska that doesn’t exist. She and Claire (Ali Larter) head down the coast in a prop plane and find a handful [...]

Keanu Reeves?s Vibrant Acting Style Tapped for ?Um??

The casting for Generation Um… is the kind of thing that leaves me, and probably Keanu Reeves, speechless. Of course, it’s clear that calm breezes, snails running, and actors speaking lines of dialogue to him also leave Reeves speechless. In theory, that makes him perfect for Um…, because any drug-drama that’s name ends with ellipses deserves a bit of the acting powerhouse that is Keanu Reeves. According to Variety, the indie film starting rolling cameras today and also includes Bojana Novkovic (the daughter in Edge of Darkness and possibly the devil in Devil) and newcomer Adelaide Clemens. Apparently the three will play characters living in an oblivion of coitus and cocaine, but it sounds like it’s being shot to show those things, somehow, in a negative light.

Uwe Boll: ?Darfur? Is Better Than ?The Hurt Locker?

According to Uwe Boll, his genius is being overlooked. While other directors take on subjects like genocide in Africa and in 1940s Germany to grand approval, Boll has gotten nothing but vitriol spewed at him since the debut of his trailer for Auschwitz. Actually, he’s gotten mostly vitriol spewed on him his entire career. Fortunately, he’s fighting back with words. A lot of them. A metric ton of words. In an interview with Viceland, he had some bold statements to make. We’ve weeded through the block text and grabbed the most outrageous claims and put them in handy bullet formatting for your enjoyment (and sanity). Take a big drink of water and enjoy Mr. Boll’s latest response to haters. You might be surprised. Ron Howard called Darfur – his film about American journalists witnessing atrocities in the Sudan – a masterpiece. Darfur is better than The Hurt Locker. Fifty percent of human beings don’t believe the Holocaust happened. He made Auschwitz to show the depths of insanity that people are capable of carrying out in a casual way. The film is 20% violent and 80% daily routine and documentary. Clearly the statements get calmer as the interview goes on and he has a chance to blow off some steam. The truth is – he’s right. On many levels. On some levels, he’s a delusional hack, but he’s right about people judging his films before they see them. That comes both from a shoddy track record and the disgust that a [...]

The Reject Report is Still Here

It’s an uncommon thing when a film opening in less than 20 markets is getting more notoriety than the one opening on 2,800 screens. Such is the case this weekend. Resident Evil: Afterlife is the clear winner in terms of size. It has a rather good chance of even coming out #1. However, the most talked about film of the weekend features Joaquin Phoenix, a beard, and a year in the life of secluded madness. You be the judge who the true winner is. We’re just here to talk about box office. BIG HITTERS The zombies are back, and their swarms are flooding towards you in 3-D. But not just any 3-D, folks. This is the 3-D technology used for Avatar. At least that’s the marketing strategy Screen Gems has been using this whole time for Resident Evil: Afterlife, the fourth installment of the Resident Evil franchise for those who are counting. We have had a Resident Evil film released at the most every three years, and this latest entry is the first one directed by Paul W.S. Anderson since the first one in 2002. Oh yeah, he’s still working. Screen Gems isn’t riding the 3-D train all the way to the bank. They’re still pimping the ridiculous action and the fact that Milla Jovovich is the one behind that ridiculous action. And why shouldn’t they? The Resident Evil films have consistently made just a little bit more than they cost in domestic sales. The last two opened to just [...]

Gael Garcia Bernal, Diego Luna Move Into ?Casa de Mi Padre? Con Will Ferrell

There are few things better in this life than realizing something ridiculous is real. It’s like the first time you found out chocolate chip pancakes weren’t some elaborate ruse invented by your parents to get you to the oatmeal-filled breakfast table. Come on. Seriously? It’s pancakes with chocolate in them? The cinematic chocolate chips in this case are falling where they may, and that happens to be in the big warm pancake of Will Ferrell’s Spanish-language comedy Casa de Mi Padre. Not only is the project real, it’s also got a hell of a cast lined up. Both Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna are phenomenal talents – the kind of talents that would be challenged by something like this to great result. Bernal will play a friend of the Ferrell/Luna family with Luna filling in for John C. Reilly this go round as Ferrell’s brother. Before you ask, yes, theoretically they could end up naked in bed together again. Although it’s great that Ferrell has gotten some great help for the film, it won’t matter if he keeps thinking everything in the language means “Whale Vagina.” [Collider]

Rick Ross Promises ‘Dopest MTV VMAs Ever’

‘It’s the best of music, it’s the best of performances, it’s the best host and the dopest set,’ he teases.By Shaheem Reid, with reporting by Saimon Kos

On his album Teflon Don, Rick Ross said he feels like Big Meech, Larry Hoover and MC Hammer. On Thursday (September 9) in Los Angeles, the imposing Miami hitmaker said he felt like onscreen Marine Jake Sully.

The Bawse has a very special surprise contribution to this year’s MTV Video Music Awards. On Thursday afternoon at the Nokia Theatre, with his A&R/ video director Spiff TV not too far away, Ricky Rozay praised this Sunday’s extravaganza.
“This is gonna be the dopest MTV VMAs ever,” Ross predicted. “I’m letting you know. Not only because I’m a part of it, but when I walked into the auditorium where the VMAs are being held, I felt like I stepped off a ship on Pandora. If you ever saw the movie ‘Avatar,’ that’s the feeling. Everything feels big, everything feels futuristic. It feels space-age. We got the dopest female in late night hosting the show, Chelsea Handler. She’s on fire right now. She’s sizzling. She’s sexy as ever.
“But as soon as I walked in, just the ambiance from the show, it overtook me, watching the rehearsal,” he continued. “Get ready to tune in. Make sure if you never watched the MTV Video Music Awards, make sure this is your first one. And if you have [seen one], expect the game to be stepped up 2,000 percent. … It’s the best of music, it’s the best of performances, it’s the best host and the dopest set I’ve ever seen ever. This is Pandora.”

If Your College Doesn?t Offer Zombie 101, You Should Transfer

It doesn’t matter if you’re this close to graduating, and you’ve finally “found yourself.” Unless you’re going to the University of Baltimore, you have to admit that your school doesn’t have the stones to create a class called “Zombie 101″ where you learn to survive a Zombie Apocalypse. If your brain gets eaten soon, it’ll be their fault. Because, yes, the University of Baltimore has created just such a class. The newly-installed course will study film, comics and a full range of topics connected to Zombies and Zombie Survival, although it will probably sneakily make students learn about story telling and the proliferation of technology, too. Or Dickens. Or something. However, this plus the academic take on Romero’s work and spirituality from a few years ago means that higher education is finally taking the undead seriously, and that makes us all safer. On the other hand, if The Wire it to be believed, any school in Baltimore might want to offer survival of a different kind. [BBC]

Sci-Fi Meets The Ancient in First ?Priest? Trailer

Some of it looks a bit cheesy, but on the whole, the first full trailer for Priest is incredibly promising. Maggie Q tossing all sorts of ninja stars, Karl Urban looking like The Gunslinger and conducting the burning of a town, Paul Bettany brooding and slashing a dagger into some vampires. It’s all good stuff, and it all looks incredible. The blend of science fiction attributes amidst the crumbling visage of an ancient order is a great concept pulled directly from the graphic novel, and the spirit of the Western (including what looks like a great fight on top of a speeding locomotive) is in tact here amongst the gadgetry and blood-guzzling creatures of the night. The CGI vampires are, sadly, a bit I Am Legendary. However, it seems as though director Scott Charles Stewart is taking this a bit more seriously than he took Legion, and that’s a good thing. Go see the trailer for yourself over at Crackle.

Chris Brown, Michael Ealy Interpret Final ‘Takers’ Scene

Stars of hit film explain why their characters make critical decisionBy Shaheem Reid

Chris Brown and Michael Ealy

Photo: MTV News

Chris Brown and T.I.’s new film “Takers” had another hefty haul this past weekend, bringing in close to $12 million after last week’s $20 million-plus #1 finish. We’ve given you ample time to see it, so now we can reveal a spoiler. Warning: Stop reading now if you haven’t seen the flick. We’ll catch you on the rebound.
One of the climactic scenes in the film features brother bank robbers Chris Brown and Michael Ealy having a showdown with the police. The Takers’ identities have been discovered, and police officers are dispatched to take them out. At the heist-master’s hangout, a jazz club, Ealy arrives and learns that his girlfriend has been murdered by T.I.’s character, Ghost. Minutes later, the police amass in front of the venue. Ealy asks his brother, Brown, whether he wants to leave through the back door or through the front, where a SWAT team is waiting. The duo choose the front, and are subsequently gunned down. You don’t actually see them die, but it is highly implied.
So, why not slip out through the back?

“I think it was that inevitable circumstance. We had to be like, ‘You know what? We’re gonna get caught, and we don’t wanna do life in prison,’ ” Brown explained about the last scene. “We knew the risk we were taking when we did it. ‘Let’s go out in a blaze of glory.’ ”
“I had nothing else to live for,” Ealy said about his character.
“Yeah. His girl was all dead,” Brown added. “That’s bad. He didn’t wanna see me get locked up.”
Ealy jokingly said his character really wanted to take an alternate escape route, but Brown’s character wouldn’t listen.
“I tried to tell him to go through the back door,” Ealy said with a laugh. “But, even the back door, they had us surrounded. There was no getting around it.”
Check out everything we’ve got on “Takers.”

Coroner?s Report: Hatchet Blu-ray

Back in 2006 I had the great pleasure of viewing Hatchet in theaters, something not many people can claim. At the time, I had an immense amount of fun with the flick. Whether it was the movie, the film festival, or Kane Hodder sitting behind me like a behemoth, I was into it. Press fast forward on the button of life and it’s 2010 and this “old school American horror” flick is available in the high definition Blu-ray format, courtesy of Anchor Bay. If you’re unfamiliar with the title, Adam Green’s first foray into features follows a group of young twenty-somethings, and a few older folks, as they journey into the swamps of Louisiana on a haunted tour. As any learned horror fan would expect, soon things go south and Victor Crowley, the local boogey man, is tearing them limb from limb. Kills Part of the reason I initially dug this film was the high body count: eleven dead. Now that doesn’t really compare to some of the bloodier Friday the 13th films, but when you consider there are really only like 14 people with names in the film, that’s a damn good total. Ills Hatchet has no problem spraying geysers of the stuff across the screen and Mr. Crowley (Hatchet Face to his friends) is definitively not a fan of limbs, going to great lengths to remove them with his bare hands, or a shovel, or a hatchet.  We see plenty of guts, tons of blood, several arms ripped off, and a [...]

Fantastic Fest Will Honor Julie and Roger Corman with Lifetime Achievement Award

Like Godard, Roger Corman is deserving of every Achievement Award that any cinematic body can deliver. However, unlike Godard, Corman will actually show up for his latest one. Corman received an Honorary Oscar last year (the same bit of metal they’re trying to hoist on Godard), but he’ll be honored by Fantastic Fest this year during a world premiere of his latest – Sharktopus – alongside his wife and production partner Julie, who has had an integral role in bringing many of his movies to life. The screening will take place Friday, September 24th as part of a double feature with the Filipino Exploitation documentary Machete Maidens Unleashed! which was directed by Not Quite Hollywood‘s Mark Hartley. Finally, we’ve figured out why Godard won’t leave home for his Honorary Oscar. He’s waiting on the Lifetime Achievement Award from Fantastic Fest.

‘Daily Show’ Star Aasif Mandvi On ‘Today’s Special’

‘When I was writing the script, I went and hung out in Rocco DiSpirito’s kitchen,’ Mandvi says of his upcoming movie.By Eric Ditzian

Aasif Mandvi

Photo: Mandel Ngan/ AFP/ Getty Images

Aasif Mandvi has a big appetite. A conversation with him will touch on curries and tandoors, the best places to get Indian dishes in New York and London, and the connections between Indian food and family life.
It comes as a surprise, then, that the “Daily Show With Jon Stewart” correspondent actually shed pounds while filming “Today’s Special,” an upcoming comedy in which he stars as a highly trained Manhattan chef forced to take over his family’s Indian joint in Queens.
“That’s not because I wasn’t eating!” he laughed during a recent conversation with MTV News. “I was eating like a crazy person. But we were sweating our asses off. Those kitchens are incredibly hot. There were flames. You stand there for 12 hours a day, and the first week we were only shooting in the kitchen. It was like Bikram yoga class.”
Mandvi did quite a lot of sweating over the project before he stepped into that kitchen too. The film is based on a one-man, off-Broadway play he staged in 1998. It was a six-character drama inspired by his family members and first brought to life in his standup routine. Years later, he returned to the play with Jonathan Bines, a writer for “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” and together they sculpted the raw material into the screenplay that became “Today’s Special.” It’s getting a North American release on October 8.
We’ve seen Mandvi a lot on camera, from hilarious work opposite Jon Stewart on “The Daily Show” to his supporting comedic roles in films like “Ghost Town,” to more dramatic work in “The Last Airbender” and the CBS series “Jericho.” But until “Today’s Special,” Mandvi has never been able to show off his range as an actor. The film allows him to veer from the broadly comic to the dramatically energized to the tentatively romantic.
For the portrait of his chef, named Samir, Mandvi and Bines pulled from a wide spectrum of celebrity cooks. “He’s an amalgam of different chefs,” Mandvi said. “When I was writing the script, I went and hung out in Rocco DiSpirito’s kitchen. He’s got some Emeril Lagasse in him and some Gordon Ramsay in him. Samir isn’t a celebrity chef, though. That’s part of his problem, I suppose, because he’d probably like to be.”
From the saucy Jessica Alba in “Little Fockers” to James Franco’s grueling journey in “127 Hours,” the MTV Movies team is delving into the hottest flicks of fall 2010. Check back daily for exclusive clips, photos and interviews with the films’ biggest stars.

‘Harry Potter,’ ‘Tron,’ ‘True Grit’ Top Celebs’ Fall Movie Wish List

‘Look, I’m a ‘Tron’ guy,’ Jack Black confesses of the flick he’s most looking forward to.By Kara Warner

Daniel Radcliffe in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1″

Photo: Warner Bros.

MTV News’ Fall Movie Preview Week has been chock-full of the juiciest exclusive goods any eager moviegoer could hope for. Chills (courtesy of Wes Craven’s “My Soul to Take”), thrills (thanks to Chris Pine talking about Tony Scott’s “Unstoppable”) and exclusive stills. There was also some interesting talk about the secrets of onscreen nudity and post-production nipple addition (thanks, “Machete” cast!).
In celebration of the upcoming season of highly anticipated films, we’ve compiled a little list of the films the Hollywood set is most anxious to see.
“I am a huge Harry Potter nerd,” Chloe Bridges (“Camp Rock
2: The Final Jam”) told us at the premiere of the Disney sequel. “To obnoxious levels, it’s kind of sad, you have no idea, but yeah, I’m very excited for it. Part 1 of ‘The Deathly Hallows’!”
” ‘Tron’ for sure,” director M. Night Shyamalan said of the film he’s most looking forward to. “Because I don’t know what it’s going to be, and that’s so exciting. I know it’s based on the original movie, but I’m starving for original stuff as an audience member,” he said.
“Gulliver’s Travels” star Jack Black begged to differ on the “Tron” excitement, however.
“Yeah, that one’s not gonna be any good,” he said. “I don’t wanna see that.” And moments later Black changed his tune. Literally. He busted out a few bars of the original “Tron” theme for us.
“Look, I’m a ‘Tron’ guy,” Black confessed. “Yeah, I like ‘Tron.’ I played the ‘Tron’ video game when I was a kid. Yeah! I’m in, I’m a nerd.”
Black went on to say that he is equally excited for Jeff Bridges’ other fall film, “True Grit.”
“Jeff Bridges plus the Coen brothers equals genius,” he said. “If you saw ‘The Big Lebowski,’ you know what I’m sayin.”
“Somewhere” director Sophia Coppola also expressed enthusiasm for “True Grit,” as well as Darren Aronofsky’s “Black Swan.”
“I’m excited to see ‘Black Swan,’ and I know the Coen brothers have a movie coming out,” she said. “It’s always fun this time of year to go to the movies because there’s so much to see.”
We couldn’t agree more!

Uwe Boll?s Teaser Brings the Ausch-ploitation to ?Auschwitz?

Welcome to Uwe Boll’s Auschwitz. It’s a freak show we’ve been waiting on ever since he opened his mouth at a screening of Rampage last year and mentioned that he’d be starving actors for Darfur and trying to tackle one of the most sensitive Western cultural topics of the last 150 years. Well, he’s done it. And here’s the sickening proof: Beyond the quality of the video being bad – which seems like it will translate to the film itself – it’s everything you expected from a ham-fisted hack like Boll. It’s Hostel meets Holocaust. Hopefully he plans on mailing a copy to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. I’m going to go wash my mind out. What do you think? Source: Twitch

Kanye West: SoHo Stud

Making his rounds in New York City, Kanye West was spotted out and about in the trendy SoHo neighborhood yesterday (September 6).
The ?Love Lockdown? rapper looked dapper in a snazzy suit as he stepped out of his uber-luxurious Maybach automobile while the nearby shutterbugs snapped up pictures.
In related news, Kanye has been trying to chat with Taylor Swift via Twitter as of late. He tweeted, “I’m sorry, Taylor. We’re both artists, and the media and managers are trying to get between us. She deserves the apology more than anyone. Thank you [Twitter co-founders] Biz Stone and Evan Williams for creating a platform where we can communicate directly.”
But Taylor just wishes Kanye would drop the whole 2009 VMA topic. An insider explained, ?Taylor is furious that Kanye keeps discussing the VMAs incident. She?s fed up of hearing about it and is disgusted that he has the cheek to use her name to promote his new album! Taylor has moved on from the incident and is hoping Kanye will ? eventually ? do the same.?

Lady Gaga Shows Up At Eminem, Jay-Z Detroit Show

Pop star makes appearance at historic hip-hop concert.By Mawuse Ziegbe

Photo: Christopher Polk/ Getty Images

The stars definitely came out for Eminem and Jay-Z.
The hip-hop heavyweights brought big-name guests like Dr. Dre, 50 Cent and Drake onstage during their two-night Home and Home Tour run at Detroit’s Comerica Park. One megastar didn’t hit the stage but did show support during the duo’s final Motor City show: Lady Gaga.
According to The Detroit News, the pop sensation, who was in town for her own Monster Ball Tour date on Saturday (September 4), checked out the show from a raised platform in the middle of the arena. Decked out in a silver miniskirt and sporting sable-colored locks, the native New Yorker grooved to Jigga and Alicia Keys’ smash “Empire State of Mind.” Gaga even threw up the Roc-A-Fella diamond when Hov ripped The Blueprint album cut “U Don’t Know.” Rap-Up.com reports the singer sipped from a plastic cup throughout the show, and took in Jay’s set for about an hour before retreating backstage.
There’s a good chance that Gaga and Em will cross paths during another major show: the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards. The hitmakers have corralled the most Moonmen nods, with Gaga landing a record-shattering 13 nominations and Eminem scoring eight. The pop supernova’s “Bad Romance” and the chart-topping MC’s “Not Afraid” will also face off in the coveted Video of the Year category
After pulling off a slew of all-star guest appearances and shutting things down with two triumphant high-energy D-Town shows, Em will hit the stage at the VMAs, which will be broadcast live from Los Angeles on September 12.

Kanye West Writes “Sorry” Song For Taylor Swift

Many of you know that Kanye West has been basically in hiding since last year’s VMA’s where he ruined Taylor Swift’s big win by jumping in on her acceptance speech and telling the world he thought Beyonce should have won! Now a year later, Kanye is ready to make his big comeback, but first he wants everyone to know that he is still very sorry and he went on Twitter this weekend to say that he has written a beautiful song for Taylor and he hopes she will sing it, otherwise he has promised to sing it to her. We hope it all goes down at this year’s VMA’s later this month! Maybe they could even sing it together! Eminem Turns Up The Volume In Detroit

Night two of Home and Home tour with Jay-Z was even more energetic than the kickoff.By Shaheem Reid

Eminem performs in Detroit on Thursday

DETROIT — By the time Eminem got to “Cinderella Man,” near the bottom of his set list on Friday night, the air was filled with so much audible adoration for Slim Shady, Sam Kinison himself could have rose from the grave and screamed in your ear and you wouldn’t hear it. The crowd at Comerica Park was so loud, many people had to text message the person sitting right next to them.
Once again, Eminem was treated like a pharaoh. He was the closer on a two-night stand of concerts headlined by him and Jay-Z.

Lady Gaga’s Daring Fashion Makes Her A VMA Icon

Armed with multiple dressing rooms and costume changes, Gaga makes a memorable debut.By Mawuse Ziegbe

After the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, Lady Gaga was no longer just another face in the pantheon of rising pop stars who occasionally hit the red carpet in a zany getup. She became, undeniably, a star.

In an evening packed with an all-star tribute to Michael Jackson, an elaborate Taylor Swift performance in a New York City subway station and headline-hogging stage-crashing moments, Gaga still stood out. It wasn’t just her blood-smeared rendition of “Paparazzi” that scored fans’ attention; it was her eye-popping, show-topping, OMG-inducing style. In the MTV special “The VMAs: Revealed – Presented by New 5 React Gum,” VMA insiders broke down exactly how her inventive fashion made for one of the most legendary debuts in the show’s history.
Ultimately, five game-changing Gaga looks were broadcast to viewers that evening, but the pop star and her team came ready to rock a bunch of outfits. “She showed up with racks and racks of clothes,” dressing room production assistant Katie Meath said. “We had five P.A.s carry everything up and we went back for another round.”
“I remember one thing. It looked like a black dominatrix outfit but there were spikes. There was a lot going on,” dressing room production assistant Anthony Deleo added.
Dealing with a gaggle of style choices, Gaga didn’t have the time to get tripped up by the backstage mayhem, and show organizers had to figure out a way for the star to hop in and out of her complex outfits with ease.
“The day before the show we had rehearsals. We actually had a stopwatch just timing ourselves. We really didn’t have enough time to take her to her second-floor dressing room,” said Ernesto Elias of MTV Music & Talent. “We created a quick-change room right off the side of the stage.”
Gaga took home the Moonman for Best New Artist but by wriggling in and out of her fashion-forward costumes within minutes and hustling back to her seat in time to make a series of unforgettable cutaways, she also nabbed the honor of staging one of the most memorable VMA debuts ever.
“We’ve seen it all, we’ve done it all,” VMA director Hamish Hamilton said. “There we all were … kind of mesmerized in Gaga-dom.”
The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12 at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for the winners from now through September 12.

‘The Last Exorcism’ Director Enjoys Viewers’ Debate Over Conclusion

Director Daniel Stamm explains the controversial ending to the #2 movie in country this week.By Adam Rosenberg

SPOILER WARNING: Before you read past this point, be warned: This article discusses the end of “The Last Exorcism” in depth, so stop reading if you intend to see the movie and don’t want to know how it ends.
Director Daniel Stamm’s mock documentary concludes on an open-ended note. As predicted earlier in the film by Nell’s (Ashley Bell) paintings, the cinematographer gets his head chopped off, the producer is hacked to pieces and the preacher, Cotton (Patrick Fabian), his faith seemingly restored, walks into the flame to ward off Hell, his cross held high and his ultimate fate left unclear. That ending has spurred quite a bit of discussion among many who have seen it.
MTV News talked to Stamm about that response and his reaction to it. “I don’t mind the passion that the discussion has spurred,” he said. “I’m getting threats now, which is a whole new thing for me. People are [tweeting] me, telling me to jump headfirst off the Empire State Building, really hateful [comments], which I can only take as a compliment. Which movie do you care about so much that you get so hateful and so passionate about it?”
Of the dialogue that’s sprung up, the director admits that he understands where the dissenters are coming from. “I think that a lot of the people that are upset by the movie [feel] that they are paying for you to enlighten their world a little bit with an answer about what’s going on around them,” he said. “They want a statement that is clear. That is a very legitimate position to me, but that is not what the movie does. The movie leaves you with a question. And it was very true to the format of the documentary style that you don’t understand everything.”
By “staying true to the documentary style,” Stamm is referring specifically to the death of the camera operator in the film’s final scene. “Yes, it’s abrupt, because your point of view is gone, you’ll never find out what happened after that. There is no scene that neatly ties it all together and explains it all to you because that’s not how it would go down. I think the rest of the movie is naturalistic enough … that it would be a complete betrayal of the movie [to tie things together].”
He appreciates that the film’s conclusion has a very definable impact on the scale of the story, from an intimate gathering of concerned individuals and one troubled little girl to a community full of Devil-worshipping Satanists. “I understand that people are maybe overwhelmed by the openness of the ending, but at the same time … I can’t think of a different ending to this movie. I think it completely does it justice and I think it does the characters justice.”

Lady Gaga Shows Up At Eminem, Jay-Z Detroit Show

Pop star makes appearance at historic hip-hop concert.By Mawuse Ziegbe
